Title: Revisiting Lowered Pegs for Norges
Post by: Bill Hagan on March 12, 2017, 07:05:27 PM

I am doing a John Alden task for my brother, Miles ... erm ... I mean Michael  who doesn't frequent any Guzzi forum. Why should he when he can just ask me.  :violent1:

As you may recall, he is on his THIRD 8v Norge.

Anyway, as a direct result of the loss of his second Norge, he is also on his first pair of Sidi Adventure boots.  Big suckers.  His feet (and mine) and those boots in most any size.

Anyway, he is encountering what I did, i.e., the left boot's toe cap is too large to fit under the shifter peg.

I had the same problem, but was able to move the peg up a bit on the spline.  That -- and accepting some damage to the lower tupperware panel -- was enough.

In Michael's case, more may be needed.  And, as he is an inch or more taller than me, we thought dropping the pegs might help, too, thus my search for lower peg options.

Several threads address this; see, e.g., http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=50622.0;nowap.

Saw these, http://www.knightdesignllc.com/Products/Motorcycle/Moto-Guzzi/Norge-1200/Moto-Guzzi-Norge-1200-1-Front-Foot-Pegs.html, and mention that other vendors, including M-I, might have such.  In the former, as the website notes, some minor owner mods are required, e.g., additional rubber stop, to avoid interference with the side stand.

As that's a bit dated, wondering if any new news or truths out there.

Grazie mille!

John ... erm ... I mean Bill

I have the Knights Design on my 2012, works fine. I did not like the way the side stand worked, even with the added stop. I purchased and installed the euro stand. Very happy with both.

Have you swivelled the pin on the gearshift lever to it's best effect? Might claw up enough room

Yes, thanks.  Well, actually, only on my own Norge; that's what I meant by "moving up on the spline."  With my boot (46), that was enough, tho I do get some rub on that left lower.

Michael wears same size, but he is also hampered by some bio-mechanical fallout from last year's crash.  And, as he is a bit taller, we thought lowering the pegs worth a try, with some post-fitment challenges, e.g., side stand interference, understood.

Thanks, too.  Did you get that side stand at Agostini's?

I went there -- only virtually, darn it  -- but my Italian-language skills were not good enough to navigate through that, and the website's "English" was spotty  and problematic.

Might you share the part numbers for what is needed for complete installation?

Also curious, given my brother's remaining left-leg concerns if there are any challenges to deploying the Euro version of the stand besides some obvious relocation issues.

Best,

Bill

This bit on the end of the lever (brake + gear) is designed to rotate. I'm not sure how moving this would foul the faring as that would appear to be a fairly fundamental flaw by MG .... but I have a Breva so a misunderstanding by me is entirely possible

My apologies if I'm trying to teach my Grandmother (Grandfather???) to suck eggs  :embarrassed:

This one is for an after market piece that looks like it has more throw than standard

Yes, purchased from Agostini. Sorry do not have the part number. I sent them an email inquiring and received an answer in English . Ordered the stand and it arrived in Cailf in one week, I was amazed.

Only issue I have with deploying the stand is. I need to use the heel of my boot and it is very close to the shifter, I have learned to ALWAYS have the clutch in when dropping the stand if the engine is running. Better yet to turn it off before deploying. Retracting takes a little getting use to as you cannot see the stand when deployed. I reach out with my leg and hook it with the heal of my boot.

Installation was simple, however the left side exhaust pipe needs to be removed at the head and the gasket  calls for replacement if removed, I did not and have not had a problem.

I like eggs.

Actually, that reminded me of a Weimaraner I had years ago.  A noble-looking beast, Dagmar was devoted to me and lovable; she was also quite possibly the dumbest dog on the planet.

She loved to chase and kill chickens, and eat eggs.  One day, in wilds of Ohio County, Kentucky -- for those who care, near Daviess County and St. Mary's of mutton fame!  -- Dagmar espied and promptly raided a hen house; pandemonium ensued; cost me $15 paid to an (understandably) irate farmer.  That was real money back in 1966.  Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming.

I tried two approaches with the shifter.  One was to remove the entire lever and re-ensert it a bit "higher" (i.e., moved it clockwise on the splines.  Interesting to see how one notch on the receiving splines moved the "toe end" quite a bit.  I remember listening to that in high-school trigonometry class and thinking how stupid the teacher was to think I'd ever need that nugget of knowledge in "real life."  OTOH, it did take 50+ years.

I also adjusted the toe tip (no idea of the exact nomenclature for that! Doh), but that had way less effect than the first method.

Without the lower, as is the case with your Breva, a non-issue.  With the Norge, some rubbing, but no big deal.

Thanks again.

Thanks for that!

When and if convenient, might you send a pic of the side stand deployed ... which is probably easier and safer than when up!

I will be happy to send a photo, once the bike is back from the shop. Been in 10 days now, waiting for an oxygen sensor.

If you have an owners manual, or go online to this old tractor-- there is an illustration

Correction. It is the parts list that shows the illustration , not the owners manual.

Super!

Very helpful.

Thanks.

Got in twowings's GS pegs today.  Will see tomorrow how simple (or not) those will be to mount on the Norge.

I can't say much about the subject, but I CAN say that the Knight Design pegs are made out of strong stuff.   I have a pair that I'm using to lower my Triumph foot position by 1-1/2" (to a really comfortable spot) and they are a nice piece of kit.

If I can stand up on them fully geared up and feel fully secure, then you (any you) can too!

One more thing, a buddy installed Gold Wing pegs on his Norge. They measure 1/2 inch higher then the knight designs

Bill, those came directly off my '08 Norge...they were installed when I purchased it used...I have short legs so I prefer the stock padded pegs...they should mount up directly....just pull the pin holding your stock pegs on...

I just got a 2012 Norge and was looking t goldwing pegs
Are they worth doing for the half inch lower?

I have the Knight Design lowering foot pegs and toe pegs for my 2014 Norge. They work very well and provide an extra inch of welcome legroom.

Although they lack rubber pads, my boots have rubber soles, so any extra vibration is not really noticeable. However, as others may have noted, the side stand hits the underside of the left foot peg. I may grind down the part that touches at some point, but I have not done so yet.

One interesting thing I have noticed is it is much easier for my left boot to touch down going around a left-handed corner while shifting, say while starting from a stoplight and shifting from 1st to 2nd gear.  Not a big deal; just don't wear flip-flops while doing this!

Another thing: I wear Danner boots rather than regular motorcycle boots. This makes it much, much easier to up-shift using the ledge of the sole rather than the top of the boot.

I am 6 feet tall with a 33 inch inseam.  I tried the gold wing pegs on a friends Norge and opted to go with the Knight Design.  When I purchased mine, they offered one with the rubber cushion on top, however they said that the side stand had to be changed for these to work. At time of purchase, my plan was to retain the stock stand, so I skipped on this.. In the end I changed to the euro stand and now wish I had purchased the rubber pegs. I no longer see them as available.

I'm '6-"2 and the Goldwing pegs work great on my Breva 1100.

Just did this swap on my breva... the drop is noticable, but not drastic. I prefer the goldwing pegs because it's a much wider platform...  to me, the increased foot positions afforded by the GW peg is at least as big a comfort factor as the dropped height.  They do interfere with the side stand.

So I too would like more leg room on my Norge. I looked at the Knight Design pegs but still would like more information about the "Gold Wing" pegs. What year(s) GW pegs are suited to the Norge, specifically an 07'?

I fitted GL1800s (can't remember the year) to my 05 Breva. Only surgery was to the spring.

On my UK (European) spec bike the side stand doesn't touch anything

I've got the Knight Design's on my 2014 Norge.  Easy install and just what I needed to uncoil my legs.  I also line up better on the original shifter and brake positions without adjusting them, too.  I only have a 30" inseam and can't imagine a taller rider enjoying the original peg position for any distance.
