Title: NGC GoPro or similar ??
Post by: Perazzimx14 on March 31, 2017, 06:21:46 AM
After taking Holly in the sidecar rig the other day and seeing her cheeks puffed up with air I realized I need a way to capture such events as well as having the ability to film rides and/or take stills along the way. Not sure if all this is possible. Willing to dedicate around $250 +/- for camera and mount. What say you?

I have two older GoPros that I use all the time and they are excellent - but expensive.  I recently took a chance on a clone action camera from Amazon. It cost about $100CDN (20c. US ).  So far it has been very good. It isn't quite as good as the GoPro, but the results are perfectly acceptable and far, far better than you would ever expect at the price and it came with a host of mounts (compatible with GoPro) and a spare battery. Take a chance - you have little to loose.

I wouldn't recommend it for stills though. Stills look like single video frames, and while they're sharp enough, they don't compare with what you can get with a cheap digital camera.

Once you get started doing this stuff, you'll either abandon it as a huge time waster, or get completely hooked.

Good luck

Nick

Here's a sample still from the clone camera (click on it for full size image):

Could you give more details on the Amazon clone action camera please? I've been thinking about one and don't have the $$ to spend on a GoPro.

Hi Charlie,
This is the one I bought https://www.amazon.ca/Vtin-Underwater-Optional-Batteries-Mounting/dp/B01HM3JYHW/ref=sr_1_10?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1479682570&sr=1-10&keywords=action+camera (https://www.amazon.ca/Vtin-Underwater-Optional-Batteries-Mounting/dp/B01HM3JYHW/ref=sr_1_10?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1479682570&sr=1-10&keywords=action+camera), but there are plenty of options out there.  I'm certainly satisfied for the price.

Among the many settings, it has the capacity to act as a motion sensor (takes 10 seconds of video if it detects movement), a time lapse camera (takes a still every few seconds (you set interval) then stitches it together as a time-lapse video, and will operate as an endless loop car-cam if it's plugged in.

Here are some samples to give you an idea...

Next is a harness for Holly.
better to get a little clamp and or tripod.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyujusUR4CM
cam on dogs POV is not like mounting it on your handlebar.. too jerky and bouncing all over..
then get a short straight handlebar for yourself to get at the dogs level..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyZJR54XsAk
experiment with frame rate, that video was shot at 120fps so 3x normal speed..

then set it up for still pics on burst of maybe 30 in 2 seconds to get one good pic from the 30

Note good resolution even after cropping..
hand held handlebar good for selfies too

Foto.......I've never really liked the excessive fish-eye on the GoPros. Look at the horizon line on you dog in water picture. That just looks wrong to me (although great photo otherwise).  I know you can flatten things a bit by playing with the settings, but el cheapo gives a flatter  horizon and less trees bending towards the centre of the picture

GP has a 170 degree lens, maybe the other has a less wide lens? you can step down the view on a GP but it uses less of the chip so you loose resolution.

I have a Hero 4 Silver and a knockoff. The quality is noticeable. But for some shots I don't mind hanging a $50 camera off the side and not the $500 one. Regardless I use tethers.

Their price point is much better than GoPro and their cameras come with more accessories. I have used their 360 degree camera on my bike and it takes amazing videos, but you have to wear the goggles to watch it.

Cheers!

What are the poles you used to mount the camera on, especially the one way in the back?

not sure what you mean by the one in way back.. Here's some of my mounts, suction cup,  c-clamp type, tripod w/flex legs (wrap around a post), selfie stick and a clamp that fits a light stand.
not shown chest strap, handle bar mount, helmet sticky.

At the beginning of the Buell Ulysses video I see you reaching back to adjust the camera. It appears to be on a pole? Is that just a selfie stick clamped to the back?

Oh yeah, good catch I totally forgot my most useful clamp. I call it the "articulator" it's from a photo store but I think originally used as a mic stand/clamp. modified by me.. it's infinitely adjustable but does transmit vibrations so I mostly use slow mo (120fps) with it.
