There aren't too many who have defined, possibly even created, a unique form of comedy.

Let me explain.
Don Rickles was a comedian who specialized in throwing insults at people. I had already posted one Don Rickles line in the first thread that had been started, just as a sort of a DR tribute.
When G-John posted up another thread on the same subject, I (just as a gentle reminder) posted two famous Don Rickles insults to him, in the spirit of (again) the tribute.
I apologize for not knowing that there was someone who didn't know who he was, and couldn't join in the spirit of the thing. Maybe next time ... ?

I remember watching one of the talk shows a bunch of years ago, and Bob Newhart was a guest. The host mentioned that Newhart was a good friend of Rickles, and with perfect timing, Newhart said "well, somebody has to be."

The only time I saw a show in Reno some two decades+ ago it was one of Don's shows.
I sat near the front.
I got picked on.
I laughed until tears came to my eyes. working Construction you get a thick skin
I'll miss him. I miss many of the older comedians.
RIP Don.

So you think he wouldn't bull his way in to sit with Frank, Dean and the rest of the Pack?
Besides, if there is a Heaven, I'd think it's a pretty tolerant place...

Don Rickles could cut anyone down w/o using cuss words doing it. Anyone who took his jibes seriously has no sense of humor and are thin skinned. Unlike some comedians of today he wasn't out to hurt anyone.........just keep them from getting too big a head.

I was listening to a compilation of several Rickles' interviews on Terry Gross today and it was mentioned he never used blue language.
Best story came from Kimmel. Rickles is with Frank and the Rat Pack at a crowded restaurant. Frank is in one of his foul moods. A waiter drops a bottle ketchup on the table and Frank grabs the bottle and throws against the wall. The bottle explodes and people are shocked and stunned. Don doesn't miss a beat and loudly asks, "Frank, can you pass the ketchup?" Frank and everyone else laughs their asses off.
On Gross show he tells the story of how he met Frank. He was with a date and she wanted to meet Frank. Don said he knew him well and would ask him to come over. He quietly went to Frank and was know as "Bullet Head" but never talked to Frank, "Mr Sinatra would you please come over later an say hi to my girl friend?"
Frank agreed and came over. "Hi Don, who's the lovely lady?"
Don says "Frank, can't you see we're busy here? Go away."

Don Rickles set the standard for stand up.
Years ago I'd miss sleep that I needed to keep working my two jobs to see him on the Carson show. He was the best.
