Title: The "Mighty" 12,000 HP River Don Steam Engine
Post by: tris on April 07, 2017, 06:59:10 AM
This is about 20 miles up the road from me at Kelham Island

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oynw2X4TPF4

This engine was used to power a rolling mill in Sheffield for the production of battleship armour plating
From about 3 mins in watch just how quickly it reverses from full speed forward to full speed backwards
Sadly it'll only run for about 5 minutes before it consumes all the steam in the boiler
It must have been some boiler they had back in the day to keep it in steam

Worth a trip up if you're ever in the area

Thanks for sharing that - something I never would have seen.

Inline British 3 cylinder...   took me back to the days of my BSA Rocket III   :boozing:

Here's a pulled-back view of the same mighty steam engine, with humans in view for scale:

Thanks for that, I'd like to see some of the machine tools it took to build that monster.

My pleasure

Here's a link to the Museums web site http://www.simt.co.uk/kelham-island-museum/what-to-see/main-museum-enid-hattersley-gallery

IIRC there were 3 in the class:-  The "River Don", one that went Rosyth Naval Dockyard and one that ...... "went somewhere else" but they don't know where.
If you see it let the Museum know - I'm sure they'd be interested

Tris, keep quiet about the treasures in our museums, or London will come and take them. They've already raided the Bradford Museum of Film and Photography for a terrific cache of old photos. If they get wind of what we've got up here, it'll go and we'll never get it back. Think about what happened to the Greeks and their marbles.
The only thing keeping us safe at the moment is their fear that there be dragons north of Watford, but, like Tolkien's dwarves, the thought of treasure will draw them.

Nice, I suppose, but needs 10 or 15 more horsepower before I'd buy one .....
