Agreed. That's the right price from a dealer prepared to guarantee that it is a good runner and he'll sort it for you if something happens ..... but not for a non-runner from someone's father's basement, I don't care how pretty it is, it's thousands too high. (Cf. "Ran when Parked" discussions)
Lots and lots of things can be hiding down in those non-running recesses that could add big money to the purchase.

Agree 100% - 8 years "not running" means it would have to be completed sorted...and that costs time and money!!

It is. Although when I was looking for one, I chose a '75 for the rear disk brake, since it's Fay and my "two-up British bike". It's more softly tuned than the '74, but also has a better anti-wet-sumping system. Sort of depends on what you're looking for ...

Yep on the '75 which also had left side shift. Great bikes! I see many now with a single Japanese carb adapted by an aftermarket manifold. Much debate about that on the Norton Site.
I think I would own one if I didn't think it needs one more gear.

I always worry about the crankshaft sludge traps in Nor/Tri/BSA twins that have been sitting for years, especially if they have considerable mileage since the crank was last assembled. I've seen several that were "un-retired" and ran really well until the big end(s) locked up due to lack of oil.

Oh hell , that stirs up a couple of bad memories . Cleaning out a sludge trap is one of the worst jobs to perform on an old Brit motor .

Nice thing about a Norton is you can remove and strip the engine without bothering the tranny.

The price seems to be the going rate now in the UK , ridiculous. Lucky I bought mine before the price hike

I had a 74 Norton just like the on shown in the first post in the early 80's...It's my opinion Norton's are an acquired taste...I never warmed up to the intense rubbery vibration below 2500 rpm or so...That same type of vibration made me eventually sell the 97 Buell.....But a properly set up Norton is arguably the best vintage Brit bike for long distance use...
