Title: My Road trip to California video...Done!
Post by: Skyguyz on April 25, 2017, 03:46:58 AM
As promised, my video of my road trip from Las Vegas to Northern California is done. It was filmed using the new Sena 10C helmet bluetooth video/camera/music/phone/everything device.

There is some shots of the newly opened Talbot motorcycle museum as well as some beauty POV, (Point of view video.) It was 1200 miles round trip. did the ride in 2 days going out and decided to "Iron butt" it back to Vegas in one day, 525 miles.

The new MG Eldorado performed flawless and was surprised how well it handles. It will be an annual trip i think...Enjoy!

Wow!  That was great.  Reminds me (first part) of my trek across HWY 15 in Nevada back in 1986.  On a V65SP!!

Love my Eldo, wanna do that ride!

How do I know he's not used to it?

And besides it was on a 700+ # Cadillac of a bike.

WOW thanks, nice to meet you too.

Ok, since you fired the shot, what was so wrong about my question? And before you answer, is it possible you're coloring the perception with your own prejudice?

For the record, I'll probably never complete a single Iron Butt ride. 1000 miles in 24 hours (ya know the basic, introductory one) is not my thing. And I'm not sure the reward would be worth it for the effort.

But I've seen guys complete the 100CCC   or the whole Iron Butt Rally on a Sportster. So 500 on an Eldo doesn't move the meter.

Hell back when I had a Road King (something I'd compare favourably to the comfort of Sky's Eldo) I remember riding back from CA to PA zig zagging across the country doing 500+ miles a day for a week and frankly that was easy. I'd not call it an Iron Butt. I woke up the next morning wishing I was still on the road.

But I didn't feel the need to go into all that. I just was questioning why 500 or so in a day felt like one.

There could be a range of answers:

* I know Kev, but man it was friggin hot out.
* Yeah right, but I was so hungover each mile felt like 2.
* There were these crazy crosswinds, I was fighting them the whole way.
* I'm still working on the setup of this bike, so I was cramping in my _________ (shoulder, neck, hip, knee) by each 100 mile stretch, it was horrible...

Or any number more possible answers.

All I did was ASK WHY 500 was Iron Butt.

But some seem to think that was akin to spitting on the guy. So much so a guy who barely participates in the forum and therefore has really no interaction with me (no give and take from which to draw conclusions) feels emboldened enough to just judge from afar and directly insult me.

Well, sorry bud. You don't know me. Maybe you'd feel the same way if we met in person, and if so, I'm sorry that you're that delicate.

I am a no BS kinda guy, so maybe that's an asshole to some. But I'm also fiercely loyal to the truth, the first to say I'm sorry, the last to give up on something and always willing to try again...

So OP sorry if you took it the wrong way.

KB, maybe we can start again and I can try and convince you there's another side to those comments you see?

Or maybe your mind is made up and I just wasted my time.

Oh well...

Hey Road, nothing personal, but I thought I'd quote you as part of an answer to KBuck, hope that's cool. If not, say the word and I'll delete.

Come on, give the guy a break!  That's a big deal to someone who is not used to it.

Maybe KBuck it would have been better if my kids were already in bed and I had time to research this and posted:

I am not new to long trips, (*Took my Honda Rune to Mexico last year)

I dunno... My original question and MY stated intent (of curiosity NOT necessarily INSULT) still stands.

Who is KBuck and why is he ripping Kev M? Don't rip him!

Kev M, I'm not a fan or a hater, but I do read your posts and mostly agree. I don't see a problem here?? Except...

One mans Iron Butt is another mans short jaunt.

To me LA to Yuma is an Iron Butt on my "stock hard foam" seat on my '72 Eldo. I stop at about 100 miles for gas, a short break and to light a smoke. I could go farther in a day, but about 100 miles at a shot.

Fair enough.

Though I would hope a modern touring bike (Eldo 1400) would be a damn site easier to cover miles on no?

I dunno, I remember when Jenn used to look at me from the saddle of her 883; once we passed 300 for the day. It was that "find a motel NOW look" [emoji4]

My '04 EV rides like Cadillac, but the seat is not all that comfy to me. Maybe I need my butt/hip bones looked at by a Doc, the stock seat hurts me faster than my hard Eldo seat. I am trying a gel pad to see if that helps.

I have never sat on a 1400 class Guzzi seat, though I would like to!!!!! I would hope it's very comfy!!!!!

Heck, what does a Commercial jets Pilots seat feel like after XXXX hours??? Not sure I'd like that???? Or maybe I would?????

1 time not too many years ago I did 800 miles from San Diego to Yuba City, CA on my MuZ Tour 660 single riding back home from a Guzzi Rally in 1 day.  It wasn't to prove anything but it just worked out that way for various reasons.  I didn't get any badge for it 'cause I don't do things for that reason.  Could I do it today? Maybe, maybe not.  It would depend on how the day went and if I was up to it.  That is the longest bike riding day so far I've done in my life.  Done many 500 mile days, that's for sure, no matter what rig I've been on.  But if the day riding includes mucho curves to deal with, then that long a day riding is probably not going to happen.

KBuck, Whether you actually think that or not or think you can justify such a comment I neither know nor care.
It was however a totally pointless and unnecessarily agro post that contributes nothing to the conversation  and should not have been made.

Sort of reminds me of the guy that shouts out insults to strangers in a pub looking for a fight.

Sometimes Kev, I'm a bit surprised that a guy with the training you have, still manages to lead with his chin a fair bit. Your initial intention to have a thinly veiled crack at Sky was pretty obvious and you only made it worse by throwing up your hands and saying " I didn't mean it like that !" You do court controversy and I like your posts for it, Norge Pilot used to do the same, but you're gunna have your detractors...But I take your point that you're not a normal type of hombre. I'm pleasantly surprised that Sky actually took his bike for a half decent run and bloody good on him for it, you didn't need to diminish his experience.

I really want to ride (from GA) to California.  Money, while a bit tight, is not the concern.  Comfort, while at my age is relative, is not an issue as I plan to stop frequently.  However, time is something I seem to have less and less of.

Personally, I love to read about other's road trips.  After all, that is what a motorcycle is really for, IMHO.

As for giving Kevin a hard time, doesn't that particular subject warrant a separate thread

Again, why is everyone ELSE so sure they know my intent?

We color everything by our own preconceptions no?

I guess the fact that you are correct I do NOT shy away from controversy makes it easy to color something wrong.

But that doesn't mean I harbor ill will or want to insult someone.

I post a lot from 5 minute breaks between other things - so you don't always get a full dissertation like last night when the kids are in bed, wife is on call, and I'm winding down for the day with nothing important on my plate.

So again, why are you so sure I was trying to insult and not inquire?

What do I have against Sky? I can't see where he has ever done/said anything even mildly controversial?

So again, MY intent was:

Quote
But I didn't feel the need to go into all that. I just was questioning why 500 or so in a day felt like one.

As you said, I don't shy away from controversy and so if my intent was to insult I would have said something like

Quote
WTF, why are you such a Pu$$y that you think 500 miles is an IB, jezus is this your first motorcycle, what a toad.

But I didn't, because that's NOT how I feel. And if you look at my posts, though I'm not one to shy away from a conflict, I don't just go around trying to cause them and ESPECIALLY not just by insulting someone.

If it was someone I knew better, I might have phrased it more like a poke in the ribs. But I was curious WHY he was saying that - that's it, nothing more, nothing less. If there was more to the story I just wanted to know.

If the answer was "that's the most miles I've ever ridden in a day, it was long and hot, etc." that would be fine.

My comment of "Iron Butt" was relative to the ride i took. It was not "Freeway miles" at all and although the big Eldo is not a "Canyon carver" it could hold its own, but the miles of twisties involved made it "To me" an "Iron butt" kind of day. I guess it's all relative?

I have learned over a lifetime of professional critique that you must have the ability to delineate between "Constructive" & "Destructive" criticism. I will always take the constructive critisum to heart because I can only better myself because of it.

Quote
Heck, what does a Commercial jets Pilots seat feel like after XXXX hours??? Not sure I'd like that???? Or maybe I would?????

Well most all the big jets I have flown, (B-747, DC-10, B-737) all have sheepskin seats that are fully articulating in ways that make it possible to "Goldilocks" you seat jussssst sooooo.

All,
This is my second attempt to send a response today. It appears I may have been suspended, or perhaps I hit the wrong button this AM.  So let me try again. First of all, I would like to thank the OP(Skyguyz) for providing that great video. Please keep them coming. I would guess you put a lot of time, energy and expense into your efforts. It was worth it. Thanks again.
The intend of this post is to apologize to everyone on this thread. My outburst could, and should, have been handled differently.  My emotion clearly got the best of me. Let me share my frustration that led to the outburst. I’ve been a member of WG for about 4 years. After the first year I purchased my first Guzzi and was quickly off to my favorite roads, road trips, various rallies, luncheon’s, breakfast, etc. to enjoy all the events I had been reading about (I’m retired). I quickly feel in love with the bike (been riding the last 40 plus years), and more importantly, have met various enthusiasts, including several on WG from coast to coast, all of which have been great people and a joy to spend time with. The overwhelming majority, like me, appear to enjoy the comradery. The story telling, recommendations, insight, and discussing future rallies is fun, motivating and addictive. That enthusiasm is also felt through-out the various posts on a daily basis.  But there appears to be a developing trend among some members. It’s a similar trend in other similar web sites. Some people, although the numbers are small, appear to feel their number of posts equate to either a sense of responsibility, or that they have earned the right to chastise posts of others. The trend includes belittling and bullyish comments. To be clear, there’s a difference between having a debate over tires, oil, etc. or what’s a prettier state in October. In those cases, which are quite comical at times, are often between what appears to be long term friends, and at a minimum, people that enjoy a good debate. But singling someone that’s new to the forum, the same person that goes through the time and effort to generate a post to further promote comradery, such as this OP, and then call him out on his comment on the Iron Butt was uncalled for, derailed the conversation, and is an example of the new trend and my frustration with the trend. I’ll give Kev m the benefit of the doubt that he didn’t mean for it to come across that way, but it did. And although I don’t know the OP or Kev m, I awe both of you an apology for my venting on your thread… I obviously need to be an example of what I preach, so again, I apologize to everyone for my outburst.

I must admit too many times i read something and say to myself "how can he be so dumb"! then i realize he is more than likely younger with less mechanical experience and nobody to help him but us.

Well as a current owner of a '16 Eldo I might as well chime in on this thread. I have a few Iron Butt Documented rides and I did them cause....well...cau se I could. No big deal. My longest day in the saddle on one stretch was 1400 miles on a '13 FJR, great bike for long days. Which brings me to the Eldo content, which is while it might make an okay touring bike it, I don't think it's going to be a great one. First is the wind protection or lack there of. Even with the biggest barn door windshield I could buy from Guzzi I still get a significant amount of air blast below my shoulder . Long exposure to high wind is a leading cause of fatigue on a long road trip. Second is wet weather handling. I have had this bike in the rain 3 times and all three times it scared the sh_t out of me. Gentle throttle application still resulted in loss of traction in the back end. On a long trip confidence in the bike in all conditions is paramount. Contrast the Eldo to the Stelvio NTX that I had, and it is night and day. The Stelvio was surefooted rain or shine and even in the snow. I still plan on taking an extended tour this summer on the Eldo and holding off on making a final judgement until then.

Thanks for the update on wet handling. I don't plan on wet riding but if I do, I'll be very, very weary. Side note: The leather bags come with vinyl elastic skirted rain covers if you do get caught.

*The wind is not a big issue with my big windscreen installed.

Thanks for the tip on the wind deflectors. I will wait and put them on in the fall as I have noticed that the airflow under the windshield hits my Aerostich jacket exactly where it needs to in order to make the armpit vents work correctly. It literally inflates the jacket and the ventilation is spot on. On another note I noticed in your pic above that your fog lights are on with what it looks like to be the low beam. Is this correct? I thought the fogs only came on with high beams were selected.

Nice bike, nice ride, nice video, nice bull (bovine).
Many happy miles on your scoot and I appreciated seeing these venues I likely won't experience first hand.

The fog lights come with a separate switch that you install froward of the gas tank on the right side, *(There is an poem cutout on every Eldo,) So, they come on anytime you have the with on. You do have to have engine running though. *Prevents batt drain.

Great to hear the ride went well. How'd you find the Eldo? Nice video too. Well Done

Second is wet weather handling. I have had this bike in the rain 3 times and all three times it scared the sh_t out of me. Gentle throttle application still resulted in loss of traction in the back end. On a long trip confidence in the bike in all conditions is paramount. I still plan on taking an extended tour this summer on the Eldo and holding off on making a final judgement until then.

That is a bit surprising.....did you try changing the mode to Rain? It does make a lot of difference especially coupled with the ABS. I am not a great fan of riding in the rain but the few times I have been caught out the mode change has done it's job.

Safe rides boys....
