You would think that after people graduated from high school and adolescence that they would GET OVER their insecurities and stop with the "Na na na na na Mine is better, bigger, faster, meaner, smarter, cooler than yours" stuff! You see these stupid cartoons on pickups and cars of a Ford kid peeing on a Chevy, or a Dodge kid doing it on everything else. My kind of trucks rule! YEA!!! Or something more stupid. Are people so insecure in their own skin that they have to revert to this behavior? I GUESS SO! Why???

Small penis syndrome.

Being in the South and having a grandson into big ,jacked up, monster Fords, he eats, sleeps, plus 3rd generation diesel wrench. On his back window has a decal w/girl & big truck and says: "When I hit the pedal she drops her drawers"
It's just the American Way!!

That's just life, we need to get past it ourselves

Maybe it's sort of like the "My Team" thing.
In stadiums across the nation every Saturday and Sunday from September to January, millions of people gather, waving the pennants of Their Team! and putting down The Enemy! who is another football team.
Washington v Dallas, Michican v Ohio State, Georgia v Georgia Tech, the rivalries are intense. People spend millions and billions of dollars on team spirit items - shirts, flags, footballs, foam costumes, and they get up in the stadium and act like The Enemy is a real enemy, really horrible, and Their Team! is the best, Be True To Your School and all that.
We don't think that's too unusual, matter of fact, a whole lot of people here probably indulge in that sort of rivalry. Why should it be unusual in other interests and hobbies?

I can understand the sports team thing where the goal is to beat the other opponent. But in vehicles, spouses, tractors, ?

Around here it's Harley decals on all vehicles, Jeeps with slogans like... " It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand", Green & Yellow John Deere lawn tractors, Budweiser, 4WD pickups, and Outer Banx, Penn State, and Steelers stickers everywhere.

no, we don't care about that stuff here. No way.
It's juvenile and has no place for motorcycle enthusiasts.

I think it has got to do with how one made the decision.
I bought my car by elimination, so I tend to think it is a better car than the other models in the comparison list.
I bought my Guzzi by heart, they are not the best bikes out there but I love them. It doesn't matter if one says his bike is better than mine, I won't get into the argument.

Maybe it has to do with that deadly sin, Pride.
Maybe someone is proud of their city or State and cheer for a sports club who represents them.
Maybe it's pride of ownership because someone plunked down a large sum of money on something.
And pride can lead to selfishness and other negative things.
Maybe I'm wrong 😆😆

Exactly. If we we're all the same then we would all come to the same conclusion on what MC to own. But since we are all individuals with different experiences, needs, personal shapes, priorities, etc. we don't think the same. If we did all think the same our lives would be so boring it would be dreadful. As we go thru life we experience vastly different things and that gives us different reasons for what we do next. These are reasons we cannot all think the same way. At the same time over time we decide what is right in our life and what is not. Then when someone else who has had different experiences than us in their life disagrees with our personal conclusions, we might vehemently disagree with their conclusions. Then someone with more power than us has to decide who prevails. Sometimes that decision is timeless, sometimes it's not. If all this disagreeing happens on a low level that's not really harmful, then not much harm is really done. If both parties agree it's normal to not always agree all the time then life can go on as if nothing really bad has happened. A friendship may be tattered but life can go on without real damage.

as I always say,
there are no absolute good or bad, right or wrong, there are just different.

Most of that are just people sharing their passions be it Jeeps or OBX, or the Phillies...
That isn't necessarily "mine is better bla bla bla" though it can be.
It is possible to root for a team or prefer a brand without pissing (literally or figuratively) on the others.
Just like it's possible to enjoy Guzzis without feeling the need to put down BMWs or Harleys.
In the end it's probably some vestigial tribal behavior in either case.

I can agree^^^...........I don't understand the frantic behavior of many sports fans for a game on TV they never actually played...I have seen guys come within an inch of punching each other over whether a Ford is better than a Chevy...Or the intense hatred of Harley Davidson shown on this site by some...

Are people so insecure in their own skin that they have to revert to this behavior? I GUESS SO! Why???
A good part of it is an attempt to improve self-esteem by a people who lack it. If a person buys a Chevy, and his friend buys a Ford, Chevy guy feels that his friend has told him he made the wrong decision. If his friend instead buys a Chevy, Chevy guy feels that his friend has confirmed that he made the correct decision. When Chevy guy puts a pro-Chevy sticker on his Chevy, he tells the world that Chevys are better, and that he made the correct decision. (etc.)

But (like being a Yankees supporter) can't all this be in good fun? Lord have mercy, when we were teen-agers and buying our first bikes, EVERYONE in town was buying CB-series Hondas, and I bought a Yamaha. We used to give each other a hard time about it, but it was all good-natured, and 45 years later, the Honda boys STILL call me "Yamaha" when we run into each other.
If I have a Moto Guzzi patch on the back of my jacket, say that I hope the Red Sox win the pennant, or give my buddy with the Titan guff about his "mosquito fogger", does that all have to be some Freudian stuff about superiority, tribal drum-pounding, and compensation for penis length?
I'm going to go look up "projection" now, just in case .... :boxing:

THAT is really funny. Kathi, however, laughed a little bit too much when I read it to her.

OK. I understand that. But, as I am about to reveal if already not earlier confirmed in my previous posts here, what I know about psychology and related disciplines would fit in a very small tank bag.
As I guy who can be as tribal as the next guy -- tho I do worry that my tribes can be a bit small and somewhat strange -- I wonder if "high self esteem" (even the true, not mere facades masking feelings of inferiority) cannot often be evidence of arrogance more than or as least much as appropriate confidence?
While not all tribe members are affable, I'd rather hoist a glass and wile away time with most of those than with smug members of a self-esteem elite.
Yes, I must pack for Atlanta and this has been a wonderful excuse to avoid work, but I have just been busted by :thewife:.

Back in the late 70's, we had a Honda dealer about a half mile up the street from a Yamaha dealer. The Honda dealer put the official company slogan on their marque, " Honda, Follow The Leader".
So the owner of the yamaha dealer put up his own sign...." Don't follow anyone".
Yes,it was friendly competition. These guys are now partners in one large multibrand store.

I was at the store one day in my Dakota and parked next to a jacked up Ford with a sticker reading, "real trucks dont have spark plugs".
The owner comes out and says to me,"cute little truck" to which I replied,"I bet all the Pete drives say that to you. Besides real trucks have 18 wheels".
He quietly turned and loaded his groceries.

Hi JJ, motorcycles are getting more expensive here as the policy maker introduced a new tiered tax system to the new motorcycles recently. I'll cling on to my old italian steel.
old tax structure was 15% of the CIF (cost, freight, insurance) price, and of course other taxes too.
new tiered tax structure, CIF in US dollar
first $3,600 of the CIF - 15%
next $3,600 of the CIF - 50%
remaining CIF above $7,200 - 100%
i.e. a CIF $10,000 bike will attracts $540+$1,800+$2,800=$5,140
with other taxes and dealers' profit, out the door price will be around $22k to $23k

This topic prompted my use of the George Patton quote on my signature line. Diverse opinions are gold for a society that wishes to continue to grow. The key is figuring out how to get folks to truly listen to each other.
-
Because people evolved with a competitive nature, eat or be eaten. In our modern society there is less danger of being eaten and food seems to be relatively plentiful so we have to find other ways of releasing our competitive nature. Or just wait a number of years till you have low T and then you will be over that childishness.

45 years later, the Honda boys STILL call me "Yamaha" when we run into each other
says Lannis.
I can't possibly get into a "mine's better than yours" argument. I buy as many parts, lube, etc. as I can from the local auto parts store (the only one for 25 miles). A friend of mine worked there on Saturdays, which is when I had time to visit the store.
He calls my EV a Yamagucci. All I can do is hang my head and walk away

Yes! I think that the sin that's being called out here is not "Having a Preference" but "Expressing a Preference".
If I prefer a Moto Guzzi to a Harley Davidson, or red to blue, or Virginia Tech to Virginia ... how can I express that preference with hurting someone's tender sensibilities?
If I say "I like Moto Guzzis better than Harley Davidsons" I am, by implication, denigrating HD, I'm "putting them down", I'm "hating on them", because I like another brand better than them. Because if I like MG better, and say WHY I like MG better where other people can read it, then I have to either explicitly or implicitly say why HD is "worse".
And then the hand-wringing starts. "Why can't we all just live together?" "Why do we have to put down our brothers in the wind"? "Why do we have to hate on others just because they're different?"
In other words, why can't we ALWAYS just sing Kum Bah Yah and NEVER express anything that someone might take in the wrong way? After 20,000 posts on WG, very many of which are "positive" or "way to go" or "I like that", I find that I almost NEVER get any follow-up posts to any positive comments, but almost ANYTHING that might look like a "negative" comment or a criticism of someone gets a "grumpy" or "snotty" or "hate" or some other tag.
Well, sorry, snowflakes. It's happened so often that I'm immune now. I recognize what's happening, I'll continue with normal discourse using my real name so I can account face to face for anything I say, and someone else can lead Verse 2 of "Michael Row the Boat Ashore" or whatever ... :thumb: And I continue to find that almost EVERYONE that I meet at an actual Guzzi rally is a pleasure to meet and talk to!

All the psychobabble aside, it's just fun to push people's buttons. After all these years, we can often predict who will feel forced to offer a rebuttal. It's almost like saying "Good morning, Kev! BTW, Harley's SUCK!"  Then he says good morning back by saying, "According to these newest statistic, you are FULL of it!" :thumb: No harm, no foul, until someone starts thinking you MEAN what you say. In winter, that happens way too much. That is why we have moderators. Part of the charm of this forum is that they let you hang out here even if you quit drinking the Guzzi cool aide, lol. Not that there's anything WRONG with archaic, fluid flinging, unpronounceable, vulgar latin styled ball bearing jackarses.....

BD is basking in the light of recent successes, duly noted! Heralding originally from the NY metropolitan area, I cannot resist adding to the treasure of scientific truths pertaining to those two illustrious New England teams the august detective references. To wit-
Scientific truth: 27 (number of NY Yankee World Championships) > 8 (number of Boston Red Sox World Championships)
Regarding the Pats, some truths in the form of ball pressure readings between the balls used by the Pats and by their opponent in the 2015 "Deflategate" AFC Championship game may be worth recollection:
Ball pressure readings in PSI from measured footballs at 2015 AFC championship game
Patriots ball Ref#1 Ref#2
#1 11.50 11.80
#2 10.85 11.20
#3 11.15 11.50
#4 10.70 11.00
#5 11.10 11.45
#6 11.60 11.95
#7 11.85 12.30
#8 11.10 11.55
#9 10.95 11.35
#10 10.50 10.90
#11 10.90 11.35
Ball pressure readings in PSI from measured Colts footballs at 2015 AFC championship game.
Colts ball Ref#1 Ref#2
1 12.70 12.35
2 12.75 12.30
3* 12.50 12.95
4 12.55 12.15
Ruh roh.
(Thanks for an excuse to 'deflate' the Pats and persist with the "Mine is better than yours" theme. Go Giants, Go Bills, and of course, Go Yankees!)

When people begin by asking the rhetorical question: "Why do people persist with 'Mine is better than yours!'" do they really mean: "I am better than you!"?
People just like to talk shit. Doesn't mean they need their heads shrunk.

If you think about it, it's the most peaceful way to make war.....many premodern tribal cultures wage "WAR" in a similar fashion...tag, I "killed" you, your out....but no one dies. It's serves as a socialization function. Everyone dresses up in team colors, defeats the others and goes home victorious. But no one dies. And you learn to go home, sleep in peace and go to work with your enemies the next day.
"We don't think that's too unusual, matter of fact, a whole lot of people here probably indulge in that sort of rivalry."

I really don't care. Back when my buddies were running Harleys, I ran British bikes, and later Guzzis. At the marina where my boat lives in the summer, my old girl is the oldest boat on the dock, 50 years old. I don't care that the guy in the slip to me has a new boat that he paid a half a million bucks for. As others have posted, it's d!(k measuring.

I have my opinions, I allow others to have theirs. They enjoy their choices just fine... but when they start pushing their choices on me... we have a problem. Doesn't matter what it is, cars and trucks, bikes, lifestyle choices, sports teams or religious affiliations... I have my opinions, you can have yours. You can tell me yours is better, and I'll likely say that I'm glad you found something that works for you and I hope it does as well as my choices work for me.
No, it's when people start pushing their ideas on me, and wanting me to validate their choices, to make them feel better because inside they're not sure they made the right choice... to that end I have but one response, and it's not a pleasant one.
I've said for years that real freedom is the freedom to screw up your own life however you see fit. As long as your choices don't affect anyone else,
I. Don't. Care.
But when your actions cause others to lose options and choices... I take a dim view of that and believe you should held accountable for your actions.
But that's me and what passes for logic and philosophy inside my head.

But what if my stuff really is better than yours?
-
Because mine is.... ;-)

Let's start a new thing: "Mine is worse than yours".
All of my bikes are... ahem... "weathered" and old, so not as nice as all of the shiny and/or newer stuff I see on here. But, that's the way I like them and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I like my bikes to be shiny on the inside. :thumb: DonG

I can understand the sports team thing where the goal is to beat the other opponent. But in vehicles, spouses, tractors, ?
I wrote a long post, but then decided... Why bother. Complainers will always find something to complain about. :thumb:
-
I quit worrying and wondering why certain people do what they do.
I would not understand anyway and it wastes my time from my own happiness.
-
I own a Guzzi, I'm fairly sure that yours IS better than mine...or at least yours did come with grease in it.

You're pretty much right. We do populate and spread like bacteria lol.
Some people are morning people: they wake up full of vim and vigor.

I don't buy into it myself, don't associate with people that do. Being Guzzisiti, I walk my own path

Some people can dive deeper and come up dryer than others!

When a civilised culture/society/nation-state inevitably becomes less civilised, one symptom of that decline is a descent into tribalism. An us-&-them dichotomy variously manifest on local, regional, intra- and international levels. Decadence is the root cause, as well as the noun form of decay.
Further decline results in barbarism, civil war and the rise of and takeover by rival/superior/more ruthless cultures/civilisations. It's been a recurrent & omnipresent central theme of history since the origin of organised civilisations in the fertile crescent some 12,000+ years ago.

True, though. Just the same, mine's better. I couldn't have had a better vehicle for this morning's putt around back roads that I'd never been on than the "almost new" G5.

Lol, this thread just reminded me of that commercial back in the 70’s about dog food. It went something like this.
“ My dogs bigger than your dog, my dogs bigger than yours
My dogs bigger cause he gets Kennel Ration, my dogs bigger than yours
But my dog......
My dogs faster than your dog etc
Then about two courses later at the end of the add the other of the two little boys doing the commercial says
“ but my dog gets Kennel Ration too”
Funny how these threads brings back memory’s aint it :)

Ha! That story reminded me of this:
