Maybe summer will come to Germany and I can cook me some cow.
But firstly, I need a new grill. Gas grill, thank you very much.
So, after doing very little comparison shopping, I settled on a small three burner gas grill.
Now, I gotta put it together. Luckily , I am a profi at such things😅.
So, step one, take everything outta da box. Easy. Next, examine all the various pieces and decide where they go before looking at instruction pamphlet. Also easy😆.
Assembly : put the first piece on wrong. A leg. Didn't see the label that said "FRONT LEFT". Okay , fixed that. Now time to get busy.
Getting the legs on without bending some metal was a difficult start, but doable. Next comes the wheels and the next problem. The wrench is wider than the nut.

Next problem I see is I put the cross member on upsid down. Oops, easy fix.

Now, I just have to hook up the gas line for the tank. Gonna use pipe thread tape, Teflon tape... then it's bar-bee-queing time!

Is that a grill or the lunar module? I have never been a gas grill man. I've had my big green egg for oh........16/17 years. Still works like new👌

Yellow PTFE tape, that is! The chemistry of the white tape and yellow tape is decidedly different. White for water, yellow for petro ....

This one is 60-70 years old
Just gather sticks from the ground
Every few years I remove the 4 hing pins and apply grease
...just not as easy to regulate temperature

I always preferred a tripod with a cast iron pot or dutch oven from it over the fire. It is easy to pack and set up.
If you don't have a tripod and can't find three long sticks, just hang the pot from a low limb and build the fire under it.
Heat is adjusted by moving the pot up or down. Fuel is way ever sticks you find or someones wooden fence or dog house. Just don't use creasoted wood to cook on.

I burned up/wore out 3 gas grills and just couldn't unbelt another $400 - $500 for another one just to see the burner rust away and the bottom burn out.
My 8-year-old "Aussie" square charcoal grill is going strong, and I just retrofitted a rotisserie to it (onegrill.com). Boy, a marinated, whole rotisseried chicken cooked to 175 internal degrees over a 2-hour period, nice and crisp on the outside, juicy and wonderful inside .... we're doing it all the time now, especially when I can buy a 5-pound chicken on sale for $2.80 or less ....

Actually, no, thank goodness. I'm amazed that I can buy whole chickens on sale, cleaned, with the giblets packed neatly inside, and wrapped in cellophane, all clean and nice, for less than $3 at Food Lion (about $.59 a pound).
I've raised my own chickens before, and I know it costs me more than that just for the feed for the thing to raise it from a chick to a 5 pound bird. And I have no kick about the quality of these birds .... Fay and I really look forward to "rotisserie evening".
Cooking outdoors, whether gas or charcoal or even sticks in a cast-iron park burner, satisfies some sort of primal urge we still have ....

An Aussie charcoal grill was mentioned. Are they still in business? I need new grates and the BBQ shops around here do not carry the size I need.

I have not been able to find, on-line or in the stores, replacement grates for the Aussie grill. The grill where you put the food is still in good shape on mine. The grate where the charcoal burns was burned up years ago, so I've made another one out of a Weber grill part and a piece of sheet metal that works very well. The rotisserie kit fits any Aussie or Weber grill, though.

I plumbed my own propane-fired kitchen stovetop about 15 years ago, using white teflon tape. I don't know whether the yellow stuff was even available back then. Anyway, no leaks yet, but I'll keep an eye on it now that I know I did it wrong.
I still miss my old cheap propane BBQ that I bought in about 1988 and used until about 2015, when it finally fell completely apart. It got very rusty staying out in many New England winters, and I had to replace the grates several times, but, man, could that thing get hot! These days, BBQ's are more civilized and safer, and they no longer glow dull red when left to warm up. Consequently, they don't do as good a job on food that needs a hot grill.

Take care doing your own gas plumbing. Guy here disconnected the gas fridge in his camper then some time later decided to use the stove.
Strangely enough the van blew apart shortly after. He sort of forgot to seal the pipe off - doh !!

We scrapped our propane grill 10 years ago and haven't replaced it...A few times a year we pick up a chicken dinner from the many church run bbq's around here....To be honest, I don't miss cooking outside...

There was a weird guy down the road that was caught spatchcocking his chickens; he got careless and got sent up for 3 years, he'll be on the offenders list when he gets out ...
I did look up how to butterfly chickens for the grill, it's a little different than I thought. I'll try that and compare the flavor, texture and juiciness with the rotisserie. Other good thing about the rotisserie is you can start it and walk away, no turning and checking all the time, although on a sociable Saturday evening on the patio, turning and checking is an expected part of the ritual ... !

It works nice, you can turn all those chicken parts in one flip. I usually just flip it one time with the temp @ 3-350. We like cherry smoke. And I don't think it's anybody's buisness what my chicken 🍗 and I do together!

I like my Weber propane grill. It doesn't yield as tasty a result as a charcoal grill, but I've come up with a few tricks to emulate that smoky flavor: I take wood chips (apple, pecan, hickory, mesquite, or even oak works great), soak them in water for an hour or so, loosely wrap it in foil, and place it under the grilling surface near the flame. The chips will start to put off a bunch of smoke, lending a charcoal pit grill flavor to your meat of choice. Also, Weber makes a Mesquite dry rub that is great on anything. We found it years ago and always have a bit around. Grills are a great way to keep your kitchen cool in the summer...

We grill often. Big family get togethers. At least once a month in summer, perhaps once or twice in colder months.

One of the classic cases in military law -- at least in the sense of enlivening otherwise often stultifying criminal-law discussions -- is United States v. Sanchez, 11 USCMA 216, 218, 29 CMR 32, 34 (1960), ("holding certain acts indecent per se where they are shown to be detestable and degenerate acts which clearly evince a wanton disregard for the moral standards generally and properly accepted by society"). Not sure any conduct meets that standard these degenerate days, but Sanchez's acts involved a chicken. The mind boggles, then the body retches. :shocked:
As for the merits of a grill, we use our (yes, propane :rolleyes:) grill at least 300 days a year. I can usually do a "depot-level maintenance" session at about the 18-month point, but get a new one every three years. Bought latest Char-Broil at Lowes last week .
I cannot understand how Frontgate and similar vendors can (at least with a straight face) offer grills at multi-thousand-dollar prices. Not really ... at least re illegality. :wink:
While viewed with understandable disfavor within the tom & rooster community, spatchcocking isn't illegal anywhere. See, e.g., https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spatchcock.
My own example came from military law, where, of course, illegality is ... erm ... a somewhat flexible term. :rolleyes: :grin:

So we went to the Good Shepard Church last night to get their Chicken BBQ...It was cooked outside on a huge charcoal grill..10 bucks for half a chicken, a few potatoes and cole slaw...It's was cooked perfectly and quite tasty........I'm not a church goer but I left a buck in the "kitty" basket so they think I'm respectable.. :grin:

Way back in the eighties, I participated in the inaugural MS150. It was a two-day bicycle ride from Houston to Austin to benefit Multiple Sclerosis. The first day was the longest I'd ever ridden on a bicycle, so I was really tired, sore, and ravenous. We spent the night in a gym, the guests of the LaGrange Knights of Columbus. What did they serve for supper? The most wonderful BBQ chicken with beans, potato salad, and Texas Toast, of course! I ate like I'd never be fed again...
