Coming up the third weekend in August. :thumb: Always a fun and scenic ride near the Continental Divide and the plains of St. Augustin. :1: As always, there will be a core Arizona contingency riding there this year!  In previous years, I rode my Triumph Sprint GT and/or "Moby Dick", (my Victory Vision), but this year, I will be flogging my Centauro GT for the first time...

To go along with the Pie Theme, and the subject of Guzzi Rallies, I suggest that we have our very own theme song .....

Unfortunately, it's two weeks before I arrive back in Phoenix for a short vacation. I'm planning on making Ouray, though

...and you know if that ol' spry duffer rides a motorcycle....it's probably a MOTO GUZZI!! (LOL)

Since Rodekyll is here helping me getting my trusty rigs back up to running, no telling what I'll be riding into Datil this August. Even have a motel room reserved this time.

That part of New Mexico is a great destination, or just a nice area to pass through. It's a pity that the rally isn't in the Spring, though. The wildflowers near the Very Large Array (VLA) are really beautiful.
-
Yes, spring is always the best, but there are some nice blooms and scenery in August as well!

If the rain cooperates the valley will be covered in AZ sunflowers, poppies and green grass.

It has rained EVERY afternoon...about 3-4pm in Datil...for the last few years I have attended...plan on it!

If you're there by tenting, be prepared before it happens. If it's really nasty we all get in the MGNOC reps. (host) toy hauler 'till it blows over.......but that's not too often. :thumb:
-
...and I can tell you from personal experience...you DO NOT want to ride your motorcycle down a fire road like THIS after a good Datil rain!
It turns into a HUGE mudslide and I dropped my poor Triumph to the tune of $2300 in damage (paint and plastic mostly...) Never again!!

I've going to do my best to make it this year. Looks like Datil is an easy 750 miles from Dallas!
-
Who won the bike last year? What style was the bike? Cafe 850T? I'll do my best impression of a chef. How far is the nearest market? I'm looking at making "pupus" for the cocktail hour.

The closest real town is Socorro 60 miles away. The motel/bar/café/gas station provide the food, and it's good. They have booze but not much selection. I bring my own box wine.
-
I never minded the rain, but, at times the lightning gets REAL close! That's when it's time to head for Matt's trailer or the restaurant.
A few years ago that one tree in the middle of the campground was fresh 'kill' from a lightning strike.

Yes...but in between Datil....let's not forget Pie Town, Quemado, and Magdalena!!

I gotta look at a map.
-
I've never done the Datil rally, but am really eager to do it this year.
I'm not much for tent camping. Any suggestions for where to stay? I don't need anything fancy, just something like a real mattress and a shower.
Any tips on cool stuff to see between Dallas and Datil?

There will be more than a few of us staying at the luxurious LARGO MOTEL in Quemado, 20 minutes west of Datil. Nice, clean, cost effective hotel with all the amenities. :1:  :thumb Call and make your reservations NOW!
Pie Town is the only thing interesting in between. Look at your map!!

Pie town is west of Datil, Dallas is east.
Depending on how much time you want to spend:
Texas Hill Country - Butler has a map
Big Bend N.P. and S.P.
Carlsbad Caverns
Roswell, NM. UFOs and Goddard's rocket development
White Sands N.M.
VLA - Very Large Array

I was really looking forward to this last year but got stuck in town due to forest fire. It's on my calendar again along with the deep forest. Should be a good summer

Who's this McDermot MGNOC Az. rep. fella? I've been to the Cottonwood shindig this year and Datil rally the past few years and still don't recall meeting him. Is he afraid to introduce hisself in public? Hell, JJ, I thought you were the rep. You seem to do the most effort.

The food at the Datil Rally is excellent, and yes, there are a few other cool places to dine at in Quemado, Reserve, Magdalena, and even at the Saloon at the Eagles Next Campground, including steak and New Mexico-style (read: Hatch green chiles - which are in season in August), Mexican food....No worries... :thumb:  :1:

The Datil Rally is the only 1 I've ever been to that if you stick around @ lunch time you also get a free lunch catered. If you're not there then, you lose. Plus it's the only Rally I've ever been to that all you have to do for a chance to win a free running bike is be registered for the Rally !! Where else can you get a deal like that? Not only that, if your bike when you get there has an issue, the MGNOC rep. will try to repair it for you so you can ride it home! Of course you have to pay for that, but still. Where else can you get deals like that at any other Rally ??

I will be going to the Datil rally, for I live only 100 miles away. I have a question for those who have been there in the past about firewood... Do riders tend to want to sit around campfires into the evening? I would assume that firewood is scarce, and I was thinking that I could always make a quick run home for a truckload of wood, if that would be helpful. What are your thoughts? I have a 1970 ambassador that I hopefully get on the road by then. It hasn't run since 1985, but supposedly the owner back then oiled up the cylinders, removed the battery, and then parked it to slowly rust in the Texas (Houston) climate. I think I shall replace the pistons/cylinders with a new set that I have, for I think that getting rid of the old chrome liners is the best thing to do to any old Guzzi. I will then 'restore' it as a rat rod, so to speak. That would be the perfect bike to take to Mexico, which is in the plans... But, again, what about firewood?

I don't camp, but YES, firewood IS scarce...and all the campers at the Eagles Nest campground DO have fires every night, so if you bring wood...it will get consumed, believe me.
As far as your Ambo...since you are only going 100+ miles, one way...you should have no problems! Get her on the road and "In The Wind" again! :1:  :thumb:

Hatch green chilies?? In season??
Be still my beating heart !
This is going to be awesome. I will need to bring about 20 pounds of authentic green chilies back home to Texas
-
There is a big fire pit at the campground and they (or Matt?) supply the wood. There is a Nat For campground a little bit away if you want to avoid the main group. Usually one motel room is set aside for the campers to take showers and such. Or, one of the other motel people will offer their shower. It is a great group of folks.
Yes, Jim is on the quiet side. Maybe it is a requirement for the MGNOC SW reps cause Matt can be on the quiet side at times too :)

Haven't seen any info on a group ride, but I'd be more than happy to have company. I would probably go up the SRC route to Show Low then over. Hook up on the east side, say Goldfield Chevron, SE corner of US-60 and Goldfield Rd.

I believe there is a small Valley Guzzi contingency riding up Friday morning...and I will meet them in Show Low at the Circle K, probably between 9:30am-10:00am. I am also staying two nights (Fri.-Sat.) at the luxurious LARGO Motel in Quemado. :1: :thumb: I'll be on my '98 Centauro GT this year...

I really wanted to come this year, I had been there two years ago and had a great time.
However, there will be a total eclipse of the sun on Monday, Aug 21, and it will be about 68% of total in Datil.
It will be 100% about 200 miles north of my home so that is where I will be. Leaving Friday or Saturday to beat the traffic and get a decent camping space.
This is a "once in a lifetime event".
I'll see you in Datil in 2018.

Easy-Peasey!! - - About 62 miles from Datil from Soccorro - one hour's ride. :1: :thumb:  - - - and as I recall...it was a nice ride!  Soccorro reminded me of Tuscson, AZ...it has a lot of the same character... :1: :thumb:

I assume by "Circle K" (there are 3 in town) you mean the big one at the intersection of US-60 and AZ-260.
Leaving Goldfield Chevron at 7:00AM would get one to Show Low around 9:30.
Sounds like a plan.

Yes, agreed.....and many graded fire roads just like this...perfect for a Stelvio...but NOT a Triumph Sprint GT sport bike...especially after it RAINS!! (Which it does often in the afternoons in mid-August!! (YIKES!!)

Could I drift the Norge??
After a hour rain, these roads were flooded and just insane to navigate on a sport touring bike...and I was in first gear....both feet dangling...going as slow as I could through the mud... and then...POOF!!....I "DRIFTED" right over the handlebars onto my big BUTT!!
I actually laughed out loud, but sustained about $2,300 damage (paint and plastic) on the ol' Triumph.   I had forgotten it RAINS every afternoon in the Datil area in mid-August. Anyway, all part of the adventure... :1: :thumb:

Obviously you have no idea what it takes to put on a Rally. I have put on Rallies and if it's not asking too much from you it's nice to know how many people I'm going to have to feed ahead of time. When I go to a Rally I don't pre-pay but I do let the Rally master know I intend to make it there so they have a body count on how much food to have prepared. I hope you don't think that's asking too much.

Couscous? Pupu?

A midnight tweet from President Donald Trump has social media trying to find a meaning in the mysterious term “covfefe.” Trump tweeted just after midnight: “Despite the constant negative press covfefe.”
The tweet immediately became one of the president’s more popular posts. Trump poked fun at the typo, tweeting around 6 a.m., “Who can figure out the true meaning of ”covfefe“ ??? Enjoy!”
One Twitter user joked that “covfefe” is already a popular name for babies in states that voted for Trump. Dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster checked in, then quickly hid its head under the covers.
That's nice....

OK, looks like I will be there. I have made a reservation at the allegedly luxurious Largo Motel in Quemado solely on the recommendation of a certain traveling salesman, so his reputation is at stake. OK, what's left of his reputation.
I am not sure what time I'll get there on Friday; I may stop in Flagstaff to see friends for lunch, or I may just start early, play in the hills a bit on the way over and get to Datil earlier.
The 850T was the first Guzzi I fell in love with, back when it was new, so here's hoping! For that, I'd even put up with carbs...

I gotta take the kid to Nevada-Reno for his freshman year. Alternative is to come back out the the San Diego Rally.

Well Tom...No worries....like everything else in life...you CHOOSE your priorities. There is always another Guzzi Rally SOMEWHERE if you want to schedule it and RIDE. I'd like to ride to Dayton, NV also...but have another commitment that weekend  Can't make 'em all!!

A number of things good about riding & packing a camera dude during the Ironman World Championships. No worries from the PD. The highway is blocked off for the event. In the bike and marathon venues only vehicles with passes are allowed. Makes for some interesting riding situations. Ride on the left side of the highway. PD :copcar: waving you through intersections because you have priority over other vehicles. :thumb: Weaving in and out to accommodate your camera man. No regards for speed limits. The "Gold Coast" resort hotels aid stations competing for best food bragging rights. The world class chefs take pride in the friendly competition. :food: The pass sticker on the moto gets you in and out of the different venues. With all of this you get a nice gift. Usable where VS/MC cards are accepted. :azn:

"Pie Fixes Everything"
Yes, it does indeed!
Except when you purchase one WHOLE pie at Pie Town and the bill comes to $35!!!   (...and I have done that....once)
-
But, then you become the most popular person in the area! Of course, you have to be fast if you want some of the pie you just bought :)

One of the Guzzisti drove his Jeep that year...so we had a cooler...and brought a few pies back to the wives..
Here is the bottom-line:
Village Inn (anywhere out west) - Pies all day long for $8-$10 for a single pie
Rock Springs Cafe, Black Canyon City, AZ - $18-$20 for a single pie
Pie-Town - $35 for a single pie
IMHO - Although fresh and good - not worth $35....(and my wife agreed!)

No pie is worth more than $8 - if all you're going to eat is one piece!

Did you see my green '93 SP1000-III? It was a good bike! :thumb:

Y'ep that's the color. I was going to period Krauser bags on it but bike is in PHX and bags are in Kona. Might still do that. I use soft bags. It's a 37 year old "Adventure" bike. :boozing:

A great vintage Guzzi...RIDE IT...and enjoy it...bags or no bags! :thumb: :1:
-
I had Krauser 22L bags on my CX100 years ago. They weren't built as good as the bigger Krausers and didn't last as long either.
I use Rev-pack insulated/H20 proof soft bags on my `77 Convert. now or any other bike that doesn't have hard bags too. Had my RP saddle packs for over 20 years now and they still look like new. :thumb: Some times I use them as an ice cooler and hand carry them @ race tracks like Laguna Seca. :azn:

To go along with the Pie Theme, and the subject of Guzzi Rallies, I suggest that we have our very own theme song .....

Not to change the subject TOO much (and to keep the Datil thread on the front page), I don't see how anyone who travels a lot, whether it be for business, eating with clients in hotels, or whether it be at Rallies, having sausage biscuits from the food truck for breakfast, ice cream and shakes half the day, and a pile of hamburgers and potato salad, or lasagne and bread, at the rally in the evening ....
... how does anyone keep from porking up when you're doing that all the time? At home, I can carefully control what I eat, write down all the calories, carbs, proteins, three kinds of fat, three kinds of sugar, etc .... but on the road it's YEEEE-HAAAAAAA and no accountability whatsoever.
Been a rallying year so far (five rallies so far and riding to another starting tomorrow, 5 days on the road), and it hurts ....

Simple answer - "Eat less - Exercise More..." ...and moderation on meals.
One could not eat as you described above ALL THE TIME, or you would balloon up like the Staff-Puff-Marshmellow-Man!!

As an example, this last 3 days road trip I took to MN, I walked 4.49 miles...just in running to the gates at airports, and for the rental cars, etc. - - and usually that is a "brisk" walk to to trying to catch a flight!

Does anyone have the email address for this guy, "Cecil" from Gallup, New Mexico?
A good guy, and I used to see him at Datil every year, this photo from 2014. I heard he broke his ankle and did not make it last year. I used to communicate with him regularly by email, but lost his address.
Thanks in advance.

Ok JJ. I found some pics from Datil a few years ago when I rode my much missed B11. I'll be on the Scura this year, Having Tom Hull retune the FI and mount some Tekno bags. But I still pine for another B11 if I could figure out a permanent fix for the dash.

JJ, contact Matt for Cecil's info. I know he got his bike with Matt's help. I lost his info when my phone was destroyed last year.

No, Matt does not answer emails :) You have to do it the old fashioned way and call him. Leave a message and he'll get back to you.

Wonder why it hasn't been "stick-ied" to prevent the need for daily bumping to stay visible?
Looks like it meets the usual criteria?

Ride safe, don't OD on the pie, and say hi to Matt for me!

In case anyone has any interest, here's a link to a web page that will show my track to Datil, riding while there, and trip home. Tracking should start at 5 am Friday and continue through Sunday night.
This shows the most recent info; use the controls on the web page to expand the time frame back if you like.

I use a SPOT satellite tracker and Jason Jonas' excellent SPOTwalla website, which adds a bunch of capabilities that aren't present in the SPOT service.

So, did you stop at the Bear Wallow in Alpine for lunch/breakfast?

So, did you stop at the Bear Wallow in Alpine for lunch/breakfast?
No, I skipped Alpine on the way home. I did ride through on Saturday, though. From the Largo in Quemada, I took 260 across to Cottonwood, dropped through Jerome and Prescott, evaded a speed trap on the road over to Baghdad, and then headed for home. Managed to avoid the growing thunderclouds, didn't really get any heat till Wikiup. Good to see some old friends in person for the first time, and make a few new ones - a good event.
Currently relaxing with a big glass of wine and three annoyed cats...

So, I'd heard a lot of good things about the New Mexico MotoGuzzi National Owners Club (MGNOC) rally held annually in Datil, NM. Always game for a ride, I hooked up with some of the Zonie Guzzi riders to attend.
Left the east valley early Friday morning with a Norge rider, coincidentally also named Brian. The plan was to ride up Salt River Canyon and hook up in Show Low with JJ, Mike and Andy. Had a great ride through the SRC, didn't get slowed down by any traffic. The Salt River was flowing strongly at the bottom of the canyon.

We stayed at the Largo Hotel in Quemado. It has been revonated recently and was quite comfortable if a bit of a ride from Datil. (42 miles)

Went over to the rally site in the afternoon. The guy behind the table on the right is Matt who puts the rally on. That trailer is a home/workshop that he stays in and also does wrenching on Guzzi bike needing some help. The Zonie gang is sitting around. The bike in the foreground is the door prize. Yep, an entire running bike as a door prize.

Since I was in the neighborhood, I had to make a run down US-191, a.k.a. the Devil's Highway. Sunday morning there was spotty rain, but most of the best parts were dry to slightly damp. Only caught a bit of drizzle a couple of times. When it was wet, I just kept the pegs an inch or so above the pavement and all was OK.
This is Hannagan Meadow.

Did Matt include all the papers on the bike as well? If not you can let the guy know he can contact me for any info. The bike has a couple of quirks to it :)

Nice photos. I need to get out there and see this in person.
@ Luap - For years, this stretch of road was Arizona SR666, aka "The Devils Highway" named for the numbers, "666" of course, and for the excess number of accidents and fatalities along that road, mostly from people going too fast and out of control. Changed to SR191 a few years ago.
Beautiful vistas and views if you take your time, however. :thumb: :1:

That section of US191 is a great ride. The lower half can be a bit dicey as it is chip seal and can get a bit 'loose'. I like riding it from S to N as that is uphill most of the way. Also, you start at lower alt in morning. Morenci will get over 100F during summer. Then you end up in Alpine mid day and it will be in the 70-80's. Also nice place to eat lunch. Yes, 90miles takes about 3hrs unless you really push it and you might make it in 2 1/2hrs. The lower half has a lot of turns posted at 10mph. If in fall the upper half will have places covered in Aspen leaves.
At the Morenci end you ride through one of the larger open pit copper mines in the country. If you are a bit squeamish about seeing entire mountains leveled you will be horrified. Size can't be described well enough. You can preview it in satellite view, but, even then it doesn't really sink in as to the area.
