Title: 1999 EV 11 - this doesn't look good
Post by: mauricedonini on May 18, 2017, 08:15:55 AM

Hi

Heard a clunk coming from the right cylinder.  Here's what I see.

Broken valve adjuster and probably a broken push rod.

Wierd stuff happens, easy to fix anyway. Pull the pivot pin, rocker, replace. Set pushrod on flat surface and roll.

I've seen that before, it's from over tightening the jam nut

Hi,

Does the cylinder head need to come off?  (I'm thinking yes).

Thank you

Should not need to pull the head. Find the broken bits, check the push rod as Steve suggested. replace broken adjuster, go ride.

Not enough pictures to tell if something else is going on there. Is the valve stuck down?

Hi Wayne,

Thanks for the help.  Think a little more disassembly is needed to find the root cause.

At this time, my concern is the large gap (~1/2 inch) between rocker arm and the valve spring (shown in the second photo).  I'm assuming the push rod is damaged - maybe/maybe not.

Thank you

Agreed. Easy enough to pull the pushrod and inspect. But that gap is worrisome. Pull the spark plug, crank it over, and test for compression at the spark plug. That may give you an answer quickly.

That's completely normal and not a concern.  What you've got there is the ultra-rare SOLID/HYDRO HYBRID, that used a solid lifter on the intake and a hydraulic lifter on the exhaust.  To prove it they break off the exhaust adjuster, only.  That gap goes away when oil pressure comes up.  So button it back up and ride it like you stole it . ..  .   :whip2:   :boozing:

Seriously -- the excessive gap is probably because the push rod is bent or telescoped.  Redline, much?  Replacing it and the adjuster screw (be sure there re no leftover bits in the lifter cup) should be all that's needed.

Will it go faster without 1/2 of the screw?

Hi,

I think these additional photos tell the story.

Pic #1 - intake rocker.  No issues here.
Pic #2 - exhaust rocker.  Note the screw is broken AND looks to have backed off from the last adjustment.
Pic #3 - other part of the broken screw.  Easy to see, but it's wedged in there real good.

Note - pushrods look good - no damage.

I thought the tappets on my Lario needed attention, when I took the cover off one fell out on the ground
There was no damage , just fitted it back

Hi

Sorry for the long delay - was away for a week.

Problem fixed.  Only broken part was the adjuster screw.  Replace, reassemble & ride.

Thanks for the help (again).
