Title: Skunk/Dog Bath (NGC)
Post by: Dean Rose on May 30, 2017, 01:44:50 PM
Had a fun morning, Angus the black lab got with a skunk last night. He had to sleep in the garage, and Cindy wouldn't let him near the house until I got rid of the smell.

Recipe:

1 qt 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/2 cup baking soda
1 Tbs Dawn

Rinse good then shampoo.

I used to have a cat that killed a small skunk or two...The cat got sprayed and didn't seem to care while he was tearing the skunk's head off.. I called the vet and she suggest a woman pre packaged douche was effective ( this was 25 years ago)....It did work well....People always say tomato juice, it's too messy and not more effective than less messy stuff..

According to my vet Dean has the prescription. It is also important to watch for poisoning from the spray getting in the dog's mouth and being swallowed, extremely dark urine is the first recognizable symptom, liver and kidney failure follow.

I heard tell of some people that had a dog that took on a porcupine - they paid a vet big dollars to do the cut-and-pull the quills routine.

Then the dog took on another porcupine - this time they did the work themselves.

Then the dog took on another porcupine and they shot the dog.

Did they adopt a pet porcupine?

Dean, that recipe looks like it would work well.  We used something like that, and it bleached our black dogs to dark brown.

All I can say is "If the information you want isn't on this forum, it isn't anywhere!"
I haven't had to deal with this problem yet but it is good to know where the answers are.

This works best for my dogs.
Mix 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, ¼ cup baking soda, and 1 teaspoon Dawn, dish-washing liquid.
If the hydrogen peroxide isn't in the home, use white vinegar as a substitute

Take this very seriously! Usually, not always, your dog is not close enough to have this happen. Hopefully that is the case for your best friend

Dunno 'bout dat......baking soda and vinegar reacts to produce a lot of CO2 gas, water, sodium acetate and nothing I can think of that would be useful for cleaning. Baking soda + Vinegar = OWT.

not if you mix it first, then apply. hydrogen peroxide will react to baking soda as well. that's why you mix, then use it

My standard schnauzer and golden retriever had a tug of war with a black and white striped kitty one time.

Peroxide and dawn did a pretty good job.

But there are only three things that really take skunk stank out of a dog.

And here it is................ If they get sprayed in June, it's July, August and September.

My Chemistry Major and Google disagree, but it's not important enough to debate. It's just Science

A few years ago my terrier mix took a shot directly in the mouth .  I never knew how hot/caustic skunk spray was until experienced up close.  It burnt my eyes as I treated her.  She was very pitiful, foaming from mouth and noise, eyes flooded, vomiting and scared.  There wasn't much I could do, comfort her try to get her to drink some milk or something.  I didn't know it could be life threatening.  After I did everything reasonable, she stayed out.  In the morning, the scent was barely detectable.  I don't remember bathing her.  In a few days the scent was gone.  I can only guess that 99% of it hit her in the mouth and that it wasn't swallowed.  Never had her to vet for it, and she's a happy camper to this day.  I guess we were lucky.  I hope she learned...

My 55 lb schnauzer got the brunt of the skunk fight here. His chest was covered with thick dark yellow slime. I gaged profusely. Not a pleasant experience.

Happens frequently to my two dogs as I live on the end of a dirt road surrounded by woods. Wash him first time in tomato juice the follow up with regular good smelling shampoo.

We tried the tomato juice thing and it didn't help.  I think the hydrogen peroxide is probably the most important ingredient to a de-stink wash.

Yea, it won't do it by itself and it takes more than one washing afterwards to make the smell gone. I always leave my boy out in the kennel lot for a couple days:(
