Ok so I rode 350 miles switching back and forth between the Bobber and the Racer, was a great contrast but not as different as you would think! Tighter the road the more the V7 shines, but the Bobber was on its heels! For smooth and cool and factor V9 all the way! V7 has its own coolness but tries to hard at times. Smoothness V9, controls ease of use V7. Gas mileage about 58 for the 7 and about 55 for V9. Driving Harley riders crazy-V9! Lol I can share more but over all the V9 slightly edges the V7 unless you live in the million dollar highway! Bikes were ridden to Cloudcroft, Mayhill, Ruidoso and back to El Paso. Temps were between 76 and 107. Elevation went from 3500ft up to about 8,000ft. The bobber is comfortable, a small fairing like a viper would be nice for 80mph drone. I really enjoyed it and numb butt didn't set in until the last 50 miles. Of course 102 heat may have been responsible for part of that!

You can put a v7 tank on V9 and add clip on's and v7 seat. Viola V9 racer!

Far as I'm concerned that Million $ highway isn't good for any MC ride. :evil: Never plan on riding on it again. Too much off camber & tightness in curves for me.

Are the transmissions actually different or could the different feedback be due to individual bikes? I realize the ratios are likely not the same, but I'm talking about the gear box itself.

Feels like a different gear box. V7 kinda soft when you push down in first. V9 solid and final feeling when you push it 1st. Rode some other V7 that felt the same. But I'm new to Guzzi

I rode a Racer last summer for a number of miles on some fun roads in south central Pa., and got to sit on a Bobber (& Roamer) on the same day.
Still can't get past the looks of the V9, but might get over that. The Racer was a big surprise, as I had expected "too small, underpowered," etc.
Not at all. Enjoyed it. Lots.
Saw a scrambler version at western N.Y. rally a week or so ago and really (as in dropping hints to Kathi :thewife: :wink:) liked it.
Have done a similar route you took -- but in a rental car! :cry: -- and wish I reprise that on two wheels ... but in lower "highs" than you endured. The "it's OK, it's only dry heat" mantra only goes so far. :shocked:

I haven't ridden a V7, but I have a new V9 Roamer and I have to say, I am delighted with the transmission. I rode a BMW R1150rt for years, and thought that the transmission was very good, but the Moto Guzzi has it beat by a mile. Finding neutral is quick, and always first try. Down to 1st is silent and clean. Up or down shifting is smooth and takes no thought to be involved. Now, I have a new Harley Softail, and the difference is enormous. Finding neutral is tough, and it usually happens best from 2nd, to neutral on about the 3rd try. Down to first gear sounds like a dumpster being dropped after unloading. Shifting through gears sounds as loud as the engine to me. Don't get me wrong, I love the Harley, but I can sure see why people love their Guzzies, including me.

That soft feeling you get from V7 tends to be its "trademark feel"...or at least what all my V7 buddies and I all agreed on LOL...
Sounds like they did something different in the V9?

This is a real interestic report! The V9 is the new version with the new arrangement of the pegs, I presume?
Regarding the gear box: I found the shifting of the two models quite similar.

The difference may be from the parts behind the transmission.
The V7 still uses the old swingarm, single u-joint driveshaft, and old rear drive.
The V9 has a new swingarm, double u-joint driveshaft, and new rear drive/bevelbox.
