Title: Need Advice: Mods v Rockers
Post by: LowRyter on June 24, 2017, 03:04:06 PM
I've never been to a Mods and Rockers event before.  I know many cities have them.  I would like to see if my town could support one.

I contacted a local venue that would be perfect: pavilion, food truck area and beer garden.  It's a semi restored area that was the old Farmer's Market.  There are bars, restaurants, and brewery in the area as well as an antique mall in the old market.

After a few months after I e-mailed them, they've finally contacted me back.   Since then, I have been in touch with some of the local bike clubs and dealers that have some interest.

What I've been able to gather, besides the bikes, scooters, clothes, usually the music is Rockabilly or Blues?

Is bike show judging a norm?  Or is just go and show?

Are there any usual traditions, biker games and the like?

What is a "must do" to be a MvR?

any advice is appreciated.

Is there a sanctioning body for these things ? John , make it what you want , guessing folks will show up . Is the venue you are mentioning the place we went ?

Dusty, I'd like to know if there is sanctioning or licensing involved?  I looked for that at several websites but didn't find anything.

I don't believe that you and I have been there.

Looks like a good spot . As for the other questions , have never heard of any need for a license , the only issue might be liability . Probably if you just keep it loose and don't serve alcohol or have sanctioned activities that might be considered dangerous you won't have any issues .

If it doesn't start and end with a pitched battle between the mods and the rockers, then it's not authentic.

Music is good(especially in the evening), a ride is good,  bikes & scooters parked is one place is best, a display area for specials is good, a swap meet would be fine, stalls for vaguely related stuff is good, a simulated meleee/brawl can be spectacular, but is not essential (or even usual). Having lots of fun is.
Get the cafe racer groups involved, & try to get lots of scooters along - the scooter crowd tend to be less clubby, so you'll probably have to advertise wider & specifically for them as well.

Good luck,

Mal

Music - whatever works - Rock, rockabilly, blues, bubblegum, the Stones & the Beatles, Jerry Lee Lewis & ELO, Roy Orbison & Kenny Roberts (no, leave that last off the list), Chuck Berry, Janis.  Keep it mostly 60's & you can't go too far wrong.

I always equated the Beatles (+Herman's Hermits, Lulu)  = Mods

...and Stones (+Kinks, Van Morrison and Them) = Rockers

And the Who = ?

Usually, I see old guys on '60s Brit Bike, Hipsters on cafe'd/bobbed '70s Japanese Bikes and the music '50s Rockabilly.  So if  you follow the bikes with music, it's all backwards.

Add the Roller Derby Queens and those gals will beat up both sides.    :whip2:

l don't know if we can get a band or even get a PA.   The venue did the OKC-toberfest and went really well.  A couple of different folks were playing music.  Lots of craft beer.  I don't expect it to be that big unless we get the Harley crowd.

"OK,  Harleys and Brit Bikes park on the gravel so we don't get oil on pavement.  Italian bikes can park in the shade so they can work on their bikes.  Japanese bikes can wax their bikes anywhere."

Quadraphenia was the Who's homage to England's Mod scene . They were a fave of the Mods .

yes, Sting played the "Mod hero" in the movie.  But they can't have the Mods without the Rockers.

But you have My Generation, Pinball Wizard, Boris the Spider, and I can See For Miles.  Then you go to Baba O'riley and Won't Get Fooled Again.

Of course the Beatles went from Bubble Gum to Acid Rock.  Sometimes on the same album (Revolver).

But most retro motor get togethers usually play Rockabilly.

If we get that far, the music will be a Beggar's Banquet.   :azn:

Quadrophenia you say??

It just wouldn't be the same without a bit of angst between the two.

For music to keep both happy, it would have to be Stones and The Who at the very least. Rockabilly is more of a Rocker'ish music.

The Stones wasn't a rocker band. The blues scene was for the mods. Rockers were stuck in the 1950s musically. The Who was very much a mod band, as was The Small Faces.
Mods were also into Motown.

That's right! The rockers had the greased back hair and Gene Vincent. Most of the "good" music was actually in the Mod scene.

I was in Redondo Beach a year or 2 ago, walking out of the brewpub, when a whole pack of "mods" came in. It gave me a grin.. white shirts with skinny ties, poodle skirts on the "girls." A few scooters had expansion chambers. Did they do that? Dunno. What the hey, they were having fun..

A night full of rockabilly music would be enough for me to start a riot. Hate that music.

Here's some great early footage of the Who: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3h--K5928M
