Hey Folks
Bill Ross and myself have put together a couple dates for a gathering in the mountains above San Diego. This event will be held at the base of Mt. Palomar by Lake Henshaw at the Lake Henshaw Resort. This area offers great riding in all directions (including the famous Mt Palomar). The resort offers camping either RV or tent and cabin rentals in studio that will sleep up to 4 or 1 bedroom that will sleep up to 4 or 7 depending on the unit.
Reservations will be accepted starting the 13th of July. Mention your with the Guzzi motorcycle rally so we keep our group in the same area. Invite your friends, even if they ride a non guzzi.
Bill has started a Facebook page for the rally so hopefully we can get an idea how many are coming. More info coming in the next few days.

Sounds like a great place to have a rally :thumb:

Lemme check. I need an excuse to go out to SoCal..
-
Sounds Great! I have an Aunt and Uncle who have retired to San Diego - ex Navy Man.
Also it's been a few decades since my last visit to Point Loma Seafoods.
There was a time Dad, Grandad, Uncle Bobby, my two brothers and I used to go 180 miles out from Mexico chasing Albacore, Dorado and anything else that would take a squid fly. Dad had a Sport Fisher at Harbor Island that we would go out on for long weekends. My brothers and I were the "crew".
Funny how it did seem special but now I know it was a "Time of Camelot" for us men of the "Younger" clan.

YES!!! A SOCAL Not-A-Rally!!! - - - and a nice time of the year in the San Diego area!!
Need to rally a Phoenix contingency of Guzzisti to attend!! :thumb: :thumb: :1: :1:

Uhhh, JJ.. it's *always* a nice time of the year in Sandy Eggo. :boozing: Unfortunately, others have found that to be true, also..

Could you post the details here for the folks who don't do Facebook?

If you click on the pictures I posted they enlarge and the details are there. I apologize for being handicapped when it comes to IT it was the best I could do. I hope to see you there!!!!!

I'll be able to ride from home
Yeah, this is going to be rough on me, I'll probably have to ride for an hour to get there.
I only have carpet to sleep on to offer, but I'm in. Oh, and you've heard of Del Dios ? It's only my personal road to the beach. You can use it if you wish.
-
I may be (hopefully) elsewhere at the time, but I'll pencil this in on the calendar. SD is only a hop from LV, except on Friday and Sunday afternoons!

Yes, that's correct, O-Chuck-O-Rama.......but the issue for us Arizona Guzzisti is crossing the barren and forbidden HOT desert (I-10) in October vs. in July-August!!

Looks like camping at lake Henshaw on Friday, Newhall on Saturday. Busy weekend with I expect some amazing bikes and rigs to check out.

Quote: "No reservations needed for Happy Campers" Question: Does that mean tent campers?

Thanks for organizing this. I'm holding the dates. It's a gonna be a rough 50 mile ride from home to get there...
So many great roads in the area, and October is a lovely time to be in mountains and desert in Eastern San Diego County. It gets WAY hotter there than along the coast - but not so hot as the "barren desert." Lots of dirt roads in the area for the Stelvios, Quotas, and Stornellos.
This photo taken only 4 miles from the resort, on Mesa Grande Rd.

You'll have tight wooded sections, long curvy grades, expansive mountain-top views, wide-open desert... all in one relatively short loop ride.
-
I've penciled it in.
Maybe we can get 4 or 5 Scura's there. "The world record for the most Scuras."

Thanks for putting this together! Barring the unforeseen, I should be able to make this. Think I'll putter up that way as a 'test run'. :bike-037:

Yes, tent campers don't need a reservation.

Yep, great roads everywhere from that location. Nate Harrison grade (off road trail) is one of my favorites on the Stelvio while heading up to Mothers kitchen for lunch.

Ok, I'm in. Will arrive in LAX a few days early so I can get the MZ going.

Zonie Scura rider IN. Gotta figure out how to pack camping gear on a sport bike . . .

If you have the luggage rack, it's easy. Just take off the seat cowl and Rok Strap everything down.

It's SoCal , how much camping gear do you need ?
Oh , wait , are there scorpions there , OK , maybe a small tent

Scorpions    Maybe I don't want to camp there??
This one I should be able to make, most likely stay the night.
Now the hard part, deciding on what to wear.. Err, ride??
Tom
PS it's not as hot as Hemet I hope.

If you guys don't mind bunking with another rider these studio cabins have a queen bed and two singles plus bathroom and kitchenette. About as cheap as camping plus you don't have to carry camping gear.
-
The location is cooler than Hemet, and The Scorpions are currently on tour. I believe that weekend they'll be in Florida.

I would gleefully share a cabin if someone wants to do it. I'm not going to bother to ship camping gear to SoCal and figure out a way to tie it on the MZ.
However..
It's been alleged that I snore. <shrug>

Count me in for tent camping! :bike-037:

I made an effort to rent one of the cabins this morning so that [Chuck in Indiana] could be assured of a place to snore, but the guy who answered the phone said " they didn't have those pages in the book yet ". He allowed as that weekend was about two weeks out past their current booking page, and he had no doubts that those pages would be in the book soon. I clued him that there was a posting on the forum and he'd probably be hearing from others shortly.
On a related note, in keeping with the suggestion by our brave organizers that " locals will be happy to guide rides on ", if anybody is interested in a trip to the beach Friday, Saturday or Sunday I'll volunteer to learn how to lead a ride show you the way. This offer includes the use of my personal beach highway, Del Dios. No warranty's are implied or included, your mileage may vary, I've never lost a rider yet, force majure, terms and conditions may change without notice.

I got the same speech this morning @ 7:30 from am "Dennis" the owner of the Lake Henshaw Resorts. He said call back Saturday morning where he would...."have the reservation pages in his book" (?????)

Despite some minor initials reservation "hiccups" the Lake Henshaw area / cabins looks like it will be well worth the long ride from the Valley of the Sun! :thumb: :1:

It is mine, however. I feel like a kid 13 weeks before Christmas.

The location is midway between the east grade of Palomar and Mesa Grande, so you'd be hard pressed to find a better spot for starting nice riding loops in the US. One (potential) issue for some may be grocery stores and restaurants - this is not suburbia. The Henshaw resort itself does have a decent restaurant, others are at the top of Palomar, in Santa Ysabel, and towards Pauma Valley. No grocery stores are anywhere nearby so I'd bear that in mind when packing: Ramona or Escondido would be closest.
It'll be a beautiful time of the year weather wise, maybe the best.
-
I can get a six pack in the tank bag of the MZ. I be fine.. :boozing:

I am sure their restaurant will be just fine. During any motorcycle "Road Trip" one has to learn to be flexible and make do accordingly...
The luxurious LARGO Cafe / Motel in the booming megalopolis of Quemado, New Mexico is another example...and the food / service there was just fine!

Eleven miles away in Santa Ysabel at the junction of 78 and 79 there is a general store.
Dusty, we do like catfish, although I prefer catching my own. I wonder if I can rent a boat big enough for my bike ....

I had to go look that one up .... Okay, apparently that's the right of the lord to sleep the first night with your bride, or you can avoid that by paying a tax.
THAT'S a bit more than I was expecting .... but I guess if any of you guys are getting married at the rally, I could take that into consideration. I am concerned about getting enough sleep though.

I think this map should give you a preview of where you can ride from Lake Henshaw. It goes steep and curvy in every direction for 40-100 miles.

Well, there is Don's Market which may have what you need. The closest 'real' (large, fully stocked) grocery store is Albertsons in Ramona, 26 miles and 35 minutes away. There's another in Valley Center but its the same distance away and small. Also, the Ramco gas station mini-mart is in Santa Ysabel, where 'refreshments' are stocked. Not too much else, but yes, the 'refreshments' are worthy of note and if the gas station is open, they're open. This spot is known by some as 'the chairs'... sitting in which you'll often see ne'er do well motorcyclists.
Otherwise, there is the 19th century Santa Ysabel Store, the one with the 'General Merchandise" sign on display. It doesn't have that stuff any more, it's more of a museum.

The restaurant is good and large enough for our group. The little grocery store in the same building as the restaurant and is stocked for campers with plenty of beer and water and snacks and food supplies. We are going to have access to the club house with a kitchen.
Bill and I plan on doing a barbecue on Saturday evening at the club house. There is a restaurant at the top of Palomar mountain and restaurant at the end of Mesa grande road at Santa Isabel. Mesa Grande road a one twisty road that is a hoot. No matter which way you ride from the resort your in for a treat road and food wise. This area has enough twisty canyon and mountain roads to keep you entertained for at least 4 to 5 days. You will not be bored I guarantee it.
-
I'm looking at coming in from PHX. Tentative plans. It's starting to look like I can't go to Datil. Always have to have an option.

So here's the latest update from the Norm .... I have rented lucky cabin #13, reputed to sleep up to seven. I don't know how much snuggling that implies.
So I'm opening it up to people from out of state, beginning with [Chuck in Indiana] who is rumored to snore. I plan to get up five or six times during the night anyway, so anybody else who can sleep through a storm or sleeps in chapters can have a bunk.
-
My favorites in that area are Julian, Sunrise Hwy, Hwy 94 along the Mexican border to Ocotillo wells,The S22 to Borrego springs, just depends on what kind of day trip you want to do.

The studio units are $80 plus tax and have a queen bed and two singles. That would work for a couple, I don't imagine your going to want to share with anyone else.

Ok, I'll head down from Redondo Beach Friday morning after traffic (ahem) clears out. Is there some way other than pounding the slab to get to the SD area?

Between Camp Pendleton and the forest reserve land around Santiago Peak, your options from one to the other are a bit limited. You're heading from the NW towards the SE, and most of the roads don't run that way (other than 5, 15 and their offshoots). Somebody more local should have a better idea.
-
LA and OC = SLAB.
I just tried pasting a link with a special route in Google Maps, but it didn't take. You can go over Ortega Highway from I-5 to I-15. There a bunch of other fun little roads after that, but if you're trying to make decent time and have a little fun in the middle, Ortega would do the job.
-
Take the 91 east, most of the am traffic will be westbound(usually). Take the 91 to the I-15 then south till you see the 78. Then to the lake. On a good day (no accidents) 1 hr to 1.5 hr. You can practice your filtering/lane splitting.
I know this is mostly slab (welcome to SoCal but FOR ME, its what I would do from the beech cities. The surface streets will be a bad way to go(solid urban sprawl) . Once down south you can get creative, sorta.
You should tap randown (you know him yes?) that is his backyard and he might offer a different plan.
Good luck!!
Or just run the 405 south to the 405/5 merger, then to the 78.
All freeway, but around here, there are no good street or rural route type roads to go more than a few miles, like to the store. You could do streets to get there from Redondo, but it would take many hours, I'd have to look at a map to figure it out. With normal traffic, the freeway is the best shot from Redondo. Even if it's a parking lot, it would still be my choice over streets.
I've got this inked in on my calendar, but things can change. I plan to be there. I'll bring my tent and a small cooler and make use of the food and store on site at least. If there is a bunkroom available to share when I get there, I'll pitch in on the cost. Not the first time I've been to a motorcycle get together at a fairground or the like and pitched a tent.
Sounds like fun, fun I could use right now to look forward to!
Tom

Chuck
The best route avoiding as much slab as possible from Redondo Beach is to take 405 south to 5 south to Ortega Hwy. take the Ortega thru Lake Elsinore to 15 south to 79 south. 79 is a fun road once thru Temecula and winds thru the lower mountains over sunshine summit, warner springs to 76 where you turn right and go about 4 miles to the Lake Henshaw Resort.

-
Chuck, be aware that allot of folks will be "taking" the Ortega on a Fri, Sat, Sun, and that's everything from campers to strings of gold wings and HDs+++ ricky racers. Ha!
I figured you would just want to get down there while its cool (temp) and ride the area around where your going to stay.
My apologies for suggesting the boring slab route. Anyway you go I'm sure you will get to do some splitting (you have to stay in practice), and it will turn out to be an adventure just getting there.
Ah the masses......
:-)

Oh, yeah.. lane splitting is a wonderful thing. :thumb:

So I'm opening it up to people from out of state, beginning with [Chuck in Indiana] who is rumored to snore. I plan to get up five or six times during the night anyway, so anybody else who can sleep through a storm or sleeps in chapters can have a bunk.
The map says the grand palace has a queen bed, a sofa bed (aka torture rack, probably), and three single beds.
I'll take a single, Chuck gets his pick of the lot, and that leaves the balance open to anybody who asks. This is a one time offer, free of charge, no warranties are implied or expressed, all accommodations expected to be slightly more comfortable than the ground. Snoring is anticipated, earplugs available. I plan to be sedated ....
-
Norm.. you're setting it up. You oughta get the queen. I'll take whatever's left over.
-
Norm.. you're setting it up. You oughta get the queen. I'll take whatever's left over.
I figure if I have a single I'm in less danger of having to snuggle with somebody who kicks or steals covers. You already got the snoring covered ...

Oh, yeah.. lane splitting is a wonderful thing. :thumb:
I did it for >5 years when I lived in NORCAL. Never liked it...never got used to it...especially while moving....always freaked me out...   You really have to STAY ALERT >200% of the time!!!
When traffic is completely STOPPED...different story. It's what you get used to I guess. Don't miss that dreadful super-slab traffic out there at all...
-
Chuck, be aware that allot of folks will be "taking" the Ortega on a Fri, Sat, Sun, and that's everything from campers to strings of gold wings and HDs+++ ricky racers.
This is true but if he is going east bound in the morning he will miss all of that. Now if he doesn't go until the afternoon there will be more traffic.
:-)

I feel just the opposite. It a great test of your nerves, concentration and skills. Thankfully its condoned/legal in CA.(although I do it elsewhere when needed.)
Great practice for we that travel by moto in Europe and the UK (and may other places on the planet.
In fact in many places (including CA) you will have a hard time getting anywhere if you don't!
Now it you ride "whales " :-) it could be interesting.
cheers
BTW its when the traffic is almost stopped or very slow when I do the majority. CA rules "30 mph or less"
among other rules.
-
:1: here. Works in NYC. Otherwise you'll get run over by a taxi. No such thing as "defensive driving".
-
I'm comfortable lane splitting. I don't go as fast as some and watch my mirrors like a hawk for others coming up behind me, but I'd *much* rather be on a bike splitting the HOV lane than a car in grid lock. One of my greatest fears on a bike is some brain dead cager hitting me from behind. If I'm between cars, that will be pretty hard to do. I totally don't like being in a car in SoCal..and only drive under duress. I can see what is going on much better on a bike, and I'm a small maneuverable target.
-
Chuck - it seems like half of LA and Orange County comes to San Diego every Friday - and goes back every Sunday.
That said, I-5 through Camp Pendleton is lovely (except when it's not). If you go that way, you're basically at my house. Maybe timing will work out and I can guide you to Lake Henshaw on some of my favorite roads. Heck, I might even let you park your MZ in my garage if you'd rather ride a Moto Guzzi V11 for the weekend. You'd look good on a Scura...
-
Ya know, Scud.. I *do* look good on a Scura. That's very generous of you.. lets wait while a little more water runs under the bridge and see what is happening.
-
Cool - I'm also thinking about dragging my bike out there in my toy-hauler trailer so I have a comfy place to sleep and hang out - with my own kitchen.
-
Remember we are err...your over 60 and "should" slow it down!!
:-)
There'll be plenty of time to slow down when I'm dead..

Sounds to me you have very little experience (if any) splitting lanes in soCal if you're looking in your rear view mirrors when doing it vs. looking straight ahead so you don't collide with a car while splitting lanes. I've split lanes for decades and know what it takes to never screw it up. :azn:

I've split lanes out there for 15 years. I can see the mirrors in my peripheral vision. Naturally, I'm constantly scanning forward and to the sides, but keep track of what's behind, too. It's a habit that has saved my life.. even in a car. Just this year, I saw a car coming up behind me on the Lario and got out of the way as it slid through the intersection after realizing the light was red. Last month, I had a load of plants in our covered 5X7 trailer, saw a car coming up rapidly with the intention of passing, and a pickup coming toward us with no lights. Got all over the brakes with Dorcia screaming what is going on?? If I hadn't we would have been a sandwich filler. As it was, the guy passing barely had time to avoid a head on with the truck.
So. I pay attention to the mirrors..

They say that about aviators as well, but that has proven to be wrong in many cases.
Have an grandson that I am convinced is a 55 YO captured in an 8 YO's body.
He would be right at home sitting on a bar stool at the VFW.
:-)
Yes, of course you are correct...I believe Chuck Yeager was still flying well into his 80's yes?
The late JN Smyth (R.I.P.) from Oklahoma rode until he was 92....
"Griso-George" (in his mid-80's) from near Seattle, WA (Sequim) rides >2000 miles one-way and has ridden to our Cottonwood N.A.R. several times and we hope to see him at Datil again this year. :thumb:

Some beautiful riding down around Fallbrook and Deluz. CA79 one way and CA76 the other. Or keep going on CA79 to Julian :food:

'cuz, I can't come out and play in traffic in San Diego, I'm looking at coming over for the AZ Ironman. http://www.ironman.com/triathlon/events/americas/ironman/arizona.aspx#/axzz4nUWz5Qq5
When's the breakfast out there?
-
Hey JJ, are you looking to rent out a bed in your cabin? Yes, I ride a Scura, but I'm not scary. And I use a CPAP machine, so I can guarantee no snoring.
-
Congratulations [bbolesaz] - you qualify for the "Free Bunk in Lucky Cabin #13 to Out of State Riders" deal. We have one alleged snorer already.
-

Sorry bbolesaz - The beds in our cabin are already spoken for...
-
Cabin #13 it is then. BTW, I love camping, but I don't think I could get all of the kit I normally haul with the F800GS onto the mighty Scura.
At least not without looking like the Beverly Hillbillies.
-
Normzone, do I need to call the resort and put my name on a list or something?
-
Not that I know about - they have my name and credit card number, so try not to trash the place while we're there.
I'll be there Friday morning around nine AM to check in.
-
So, I-8 out of Zonie land.
Then -
1. Imperial Highway ??
or
2. Sunrise Highway ??
or
3. CA-79 ??
What do locals recommend?
-
If I-10 out of Phoenix, then 78 out of Blythe.
If I-8, then I like S2 North out of Ocotillo - unless it's hot, then keep going on 8 and pick up S1 (sunrise highway) or 79 North - both lead to Julian.
-
Might just go for Sunrise Hwy, only so I can hear the mighty Scura while climbing the Kumeyaay grade.
Who's twistier, S1 or S2?
Julian, hmmm, pie.
-
Neither S1 nor S2 are very twisty. They've both got nice sections though. S1 will take you over 6,000 feet. S2 is low desert (near sea level) and meets 78, for a lovely ride up the Banner Grade on 78 into Julian.
If you want to rumble up Kumeyaay's big sweepers, get off I-8 as soon as you make the big grade (at the desert watchtower exit), then follow old highway 80 to S1 to avoid the slab. If you want more twisties, go through Pine Valley on Old 80 then pick up 79 North where you will see this sign:

There is some EXCEPTIONAL "apple pie" in Julian!! Cool little town!!

I stopped by the Lake Henshaw campground after a nice little zip through Mesa Grande. Seems like good people there and a good spot for a rally. They are not worried about check-in or check-out times in October (off-peak) and said not to worry about making a reservation for camping. I'll probably pull my toy-hauler out there so I have a cozy place to sleep and my own kitchen. I can accommodate two Guzzi-Guests comfortably - and a third if somebody wants me to set up the truck-bed-tent.
Then I went up Palomar Mountain's East Grade, which is lovely. Then down the South Grade, which was full of road racers and photographers - great road, but that's why I usually avoid it on the weekends.

Did the Banner Grade last year. But since I came from the east, I had to crawl in the line up to the Border Patrol check point for about 1/2 hour.
If you want to rumble up Kumeyaay's big sweepers
Yea, RUMBLE, that's it.
If you want more twisties, go through Pine Valley on Old 80 then pick up 79 North
Houston, we have a route ! Pie included.

In 1907, Julian apples won the prestigious Wilder Medal, the highest award given by the American Pomological Society.
:food:
-
I am very tempted to make this...may just to have to trailer it out to avoid 3 days there and 3 days back of monotonous slab riding...
Now I'm thinking we should start a thread for the best Pie shops around the U.S.! Julian was a fun place to visit back in the 80's, sounds like it's still going strong!

Easy. Pie-O-Neer in Pie Town, NM. Get there early, the pies sell out quick.
Honorable Mention, Rock Springs Café in Black Canyon City, AZ.

Does anyone have cabin floor space or a extra bed and want to split costs? I live nearby but can't get my tent and dog there at the same time without a trailer.
Dog is a 4 year old Shiba Inu, about 25 lbs and very quiet. Owner is 51 and likes good beer and a fun crowd, but snores (or so I've been told. Liars!) :thumb:

Well I'm only 50 miles away but the dog is technically Japanese. Is that close enough or maybe only Italian dogs qualify? She is guaranteed to provide some levity to the campfire shenanigans! A bunk would free up some storage room for supplies too in the saddlebags for a nice supply run.....
-
Alright, you and your dog slip in under the "international" clause. I hope [Chuck in Indiana] and [bbolesaz] aren't allergic to dogs.
Since we've got a couple of known snorers, I wonder if we should call it the Thunderdome.

Breakfast was excellent, as usual. $11.00 for a spicy omelette with lots of avocado, a huge pile of hash browns, and wheat toast with real jam - none of that too-sweet jelly in single-serving plastic containers. Coffee was strong enough and served in a manly stoneware mug. Out the door for $18 with tax and generous tip - and a breakfast big enough to hold over till dinner.

And here's another section of road for your enjoyment.

Doesn't look like any fun at all, Scud.. maybe I should cancel my airline tix?
Passing on the double yella is reckless driving in Indiana, with all of the ensuing baggage. Don't blame you, though. Fortunately, most in SoCal will pull over and wave you on.

Yeah, that was a clear slow-down and pull over to allow me to pass. Very common here. Sometimes the pass can be executed by double-occupying the lane. But if a driver brakes and goes toward the shoulder (as that one did) I figure a pass is acceptable.
-
If I am in a car or SUV on a road like that and there are motorcycles behind me....I always pull over...and get an approval wave from the bikers every time! :thumb:
Sadly, not every cager is that courteous...
-
We may be in SoCal that weekend, but it'll be courtesy of Alaska Airlines and a rental car. ~sigh~
We'd ride down, but getting back through the mtn passes that time of year is iffy. IIRC, four years ago we got snow in the Cascades coming back from a trip to Cambria.

FYI: I just reserved the last cabin. So it looks like a nice turnout.

Well, it looks like the newer style bikes are showing up. I have a question?
I plan to show up to this little get together, But I'm torn between which bike to take???
My EV, never been out and about for more than about 60 miles at a time, would love to take it just to see how we get along on long rides.
My Eldo is a proven ride. Been to many rides with it in the 35 or so years I've had it, most have been about 300 miles or so one way or less.
Soooo....... Just would like to know???? Would you kids like to see a old worn and a bit tattered Loop, or a fairly clean EV?????
My Loop and EV are both staring at me with the "take me" look!!

Since I never really bonded with the EV I had here for a couple of years, and given that it only has about a 135 mile range, I'd rather see the Eldo. But that's just me.
I'll be on my Norge, so there is that.

That's one heck of a haul you've got planned there - I wonder if you're the winner of the longest ride to get there award.
I believe the prize is a beer and some ibuprofen.

I doubt very much if I will be the winner of ANYTHING!! (lol) - - especially if ol' "Griso-George" from Sequim, WA shows up!!
Well, the "shake-down" ride for the ol' Yellow Horse (my '98 Centauro GT)... was the recent New Mexico Guzzi Rally in Datil, and that was about 729 miles round trip! - - No issues, as I got off the bike for gas every 85-100 miles or so...she ran "flawlessly!" :thumb:

Yes, Show Low is a HUGE speed trap...and we took it easy.   My tank holds 4.8 gallons...at 36 MPG, that's about 173 miles per tank full. My ass starts to tell me it's time to get OFF at about 85-100 miles, and that suits me just fine. Most of the time, I cruised at 70-75 mph...and that also is fine by me... :thumb: :1: :thumb:

JJ - if you haven't ridden it before, consider the grey route. I'm sure you know the part through Wickenburg in AZ. Once you cross the AZ/CA border, the 78 West (but it goes South at first) is more fun than the 10. If you go via I-10, Box Canyon (from Joshua Tree National Park entrance to Mecca, CA) is a short, but entertaining, reward for all that slab.
When I went to last year's AZ gathering on my Scura, I took the grey route, plus went through Prescott and Jerome.

Many years ago...I used to ride with the BMW group out of Phoenix (P.I.T.S. - Phoenix International Touring Society), and we rode to Mission Bay, CA every October for the San Diego BMW club rally, so I have taken the grey route before.
Also, I now live in the VOC (Village of Oak Creek), or "Big Park", outside of Sedona, so I often ride to Prescott and Jerome. :thumb:  :1:

One issue with taking CA-78 is that at the intersection of CA-78 and CA-86 on the west side of the Salton Sea, there is a very slow Border Patrol checkpoint. Last fall, it was a 25 minute wait. And no, I don't cut lines.
I'm going to take I-8 up the Kumeyaay, then S1 Sunrise Hwy up to CA-79 and on in. Oh, a stop in Julian for pie. :food:

No night time riding for me...weather in Oct. during the day will be fine....I will do it in about 5-6 hours (with stops...). I-10 / I-8 are both straight, super-slab, and BORING...but it is what it is...so I will FORGE ON!! :thumb: :1:

I would do the same JJ. Maybe get a room in Yuma and a morning ride west. Been awhile since I've been down that way.

Oak Creek to Lake Henshaw is an easy single-day ride. Start early enough and you'll have the sun at your back almost the whole time. And plenty of time for a few stops and scenic roads along the way.

The only one having a debate is Neil deGrasse Tyson (whom I respect a great deal) - who has spent every minute since his decision to demote Pluto to defending that choice!
Pluto is a planet!!!! The definition of a planet is satisfied by Pluto in all respects, certainly more so than Mercury!

That Allard is amazing  However, I'd take the 914 as a daily driver or the Healy 3000 if it was painted BRG and has the triple SU setup which includes the 2-speed electric overdrive. That baby blue is just not right for that car. Friend of mine from High School has a TD that he has owned since then (64 I think is when he got it). Still drives it on a regular basis.

^^^^ I had a Healey 3000 when I was a kid. What a fun machine..

I love vintage and classic cars...(and motorcycles), and it is such a treat to see them driven ,(...and ridden), and on the road and "In The Wind" as they were always intended.
My three favorite vehicles / bikes in that photo group are: (not including our '67 Mustang of course...)
1. That Austin-Healey Bug-Eyed Sprite
2. The '74 850 Norton Commando
3. The MG-TD

With the Norge currently out of commission (broken top shock mounting bolt ), I just became iffy for the Rally, or I may have to ride up something else (Shadow, or the wife's BV350). We'll see what happens.

Yep, doesn’t matter what you ride if you can’t get the bolt replaced in time. Just go

I rode my 2014 Victory Vision, (aka "Moby Dick" - The Great White Whale), to the New Mexico Guzzi Rally in Datil three years in a row....and although I was the brunt of and had to endure many, many tasteless jokes about the look of my bike...I still rode it there and made the Rally!
Thankfully, I now have a '98 Centauro GT! :1:  Anyway, like others have said, it does not matter WHAT you ride...as long as you RIDE and show up! Anything on two wheels will do!!

Agreed...anything on two-wheels works!
After a successul 729 mile roun-trip "shake-down" ride to Datil, NM in August on the ol' Horse, I believe she will be OK for this upcoming Lake Henshaw run. :1: :thumb:

I kind of get the impression that you're looking forward to this event
Nice Wing - I owned one for about six months in a complex arrangement with my brother, who I returned it to when his car got stolen.
I never really bonded with it, then again I wasn't using it as it was intended - it was a bit large for my commute.
My wife loved it, she said it was like sitting on the couch and she'd shout " Bring me my champagne ! "
I told her it was like driving a truck on a sports car track. It didn't help any that we were drinking a lot in those days, and while she was having fun I was doing the moderation thing and worrying overtime - even one beer takes the fun out of riding for me.

Hi normzone!
1. Yes, I am looking forward to this event and to see Bill "Billoni" Ross and the boys - - so all the "shameless" BUMPS are hoping promoting it for the SOCAL crew. Plus....I have never been to Lake Henshaw!
2. Several of the SOCAL Guzzisti supported and rode out to our annual N.A.R. in Cottonwood the first weekend in May, so I want to reciprocate.
3. Any "Road Trip" on a Guzzi beats sitting home pulling one's carrot!   :thumb:

You Arizona types wouldn't even have carrots if you didn't steal all the water from the Colorado!
-
Plus....I have never been to Lake Henshaw!
In the absence of a bunch of guys on Guzzis the lake itself is, ummmmm, not exactly a 'destination' in the classic sense  although it's a pretty enough lake. It is however at the foot of Palomar Mountain, which is a 'destination', and otherwise smack dab in the middle of some of the best riding in the US. And I'm guessing there will be a bunch of guys on Guzzis there too...

Geography...
Lake Henshaw: I agree that the best part of Lake Henshaw is the surrounding area, not the lake itself. In fact, the lake puts out some dense fog sometimes in the morning, which can make coming down off the mountain a little challenging.
Colorado River: Technically, Los Angeles owes it early growth and current size primarily to water from the Owens River Valley in California, not the Colorado River. However, a lot of Colorado River water does reach Riverside, CA. It also irrigates farmland in Imperial County, California, which the "Zonies" need to traverse in order to enter San Diego.
Attendance...
My Daughter's 21st birthday is the Friday of the event, so I think I will show up before breakfast on Saturday morning. Probably won't camp, since the Lake is only an hour from my home.
-
I'm still planning to be there. Loop or EV, not sure. Don't want Norm kidnapping my Loop
Questions though:
Does the store/diner sell beer and ice as well as snacks? Do I need to pack these kind or things in? What are the hours for food and for supplies? I like to have a plan ahead of time.
My goal is to be there Friday and at least Saturday and sleep in my tent or a floor if a cabin has room and use the store/diner for food.

Lucky Cabin # 13 is open to anybody who wants to throw dice for the bunk of their choice - I'll bring some fours, eights, twelves and twenties. Some people have made choices ahead of you.
Tom - Bring the loop, you can ride Josie (the Bassa Rat) and I'll ride your loop.
I don't know about the store, but I'll arrange ice. The Alaskan contingent has arranged for a glacier, a la Larry Niven / Burning City. Beer? Name your poison, I'm an enabler.
Can't speak for food, we may be getting inventive.

>You Arizona types wouldn't even have carrots if you didn't steal all the water from the Colorado!
Funny story: when the western states got together and wrote the Colorado River Water Compacts the Arizona Delegation
was widely criticized for their bad bargaining. They let California have most of the power from Hoover Dam,
Parker Dam etc. In return all they got was water which no one needed at the time. (Of course, Nevada with the smallest
population didn't get either. Now you are trying to steal California's water from Lake Tahoe)
JJ: Grand Coulee dam doesn't help Los Angeles or Phoenix much, it's on the Columbia River.

There'll Shirley be someplace on the grounds to charge your stuff.. <shrug>

I haven't been up there to check it out, but I plan to bring an extension cord and a couple of power bars (electric type, not sports junk food). I assume betwixt us we'll have enough tools for minor kerfuffles, and I'm ashamed to say that I'll also pack a spare new battery. Mine's just fine, but the lifetime warranty one that's dead in my spare room should get traded in.

I believe all the cabins have electricity. I know they have kitchens, bathrooms and lights

I just saw where Glen Morgan canceled his cabin for the weekend at Lake Henshaw resort if someone wants it.

I'm starting to get a bit nervous.
Cabin 13, Friday the 13th, is there uummm Eellecttriccitty in the cabin. In that cabin, is there anyone with the name of Jason or Freddie????
Sorry, couldn't help it

Chuck - it seems like half of LA and Orange County comes to San Diego every Friday - and goes back every Sunday.
That said, I-5 through Camp Pendleton is lovely (except when it's not). If you go that way, you're basically at my house. Maybe timing will work out and I can guide you to Lake Henshaw on some of my favorite roads. Heck, I might even let you park your MZ in my garage if you'd rather ride a Moto Guzzi V11 for the weekend. You'd look good on a Scura...
Hey, Scud.. in case the MZ is inop  do you still have a spare V11?

Just to be clear, the lake is more a pond in a cow pasture, the riding in and around the area and Palomar Mountain however are certainly worthy destination. The campground is very good for accommodating a group situation relaxed and laid back.

Yeah, this is So Cal, and unfortunately we don't do water very well around here. We have it in bottles and at the beach, but unless you catch us in our flood season (every 5 - 10 years) it's the desert we took it from, especially after that damn fool burned off the pines.
And there's a fun run to and from the beach if you want a guide.

Here's a question for those of you familiar with the roads in the area.
I'm thinking of a Saturday ride that might look like this:
Hwy 76 to Oceanside.
North on US 1 to San Juan Capistrano:
I'd like to see some beach communities, maybe have lunch on the ocean.
East on 74 to Hemet
South on Hwy 79 to Palomar and back to Lake Henshaw.
1. Is this too ambitious?
2. Will traffic be a big issue on Saturday?
3. Is there something better?
Mike

The roads in the immediate vicinity of Lake Henshaw are some of the best around, what you've described is (mostly) long and boring. Also, from Oceanside to Capistrano is occupied by Camp Pendleton, so you'd be on the freeway for that section. Otherwise, yes, traffic will be an issue anywhere near the beach.
What I'd suggets if you want to have lunch near the ocean is ride west to someplace like Encinitas and back, maybe getting there via Del Dios Highway from Escondido through Rancho Santa Fe. Anyway, there are plenty of nice roads to get there and back.
-
I'm glad I asked. Thanks! Looks like the book I was using "The Best Roads Of California" might be a bit dated.
Mike

Yeah, that's the route I'd suggest.
To Escondido via Ramona and San Pasqual Valley is fun
Through Escondido to Del Dios Highway is just a town
Del Dios to the coast and then north a mile to Solana Beach will give you a feel for the coast at it's best, then it's traffic fillled light to light from there.
Back from Solana via Rancho Santa Fe is some insane twisties that lead you back to Del Dios.
At that point you either retrace your steps or run some slab north to alternate eastern routes that lead you back to base camp.

Yep, the seat/helmet lock, too. Yesterday, after giving up, the locksmith (?) said I'd have to take the lock set out, so I did. Had to get the triple off to get at the *hardened* anti tamper screws. Took it to him today, and he Still couldn't get into it.
He said, Iknow a guy.. so I left it with him.
I'm totally frustrated right now, but I'll get over it.

I'd be happy to do that, no matter what way I get down there. Looking for a rental car just in case.. should I plan on thurs. or fri.?

Drug her kid's toy air compressor in to air up the tires, and it was dead. Had to tear it apart and jumper the switch.
Went to the hardware store this morning to replace the anti tamper screws and they had 3 sizes. Too short, too long, and a button head that the head diameter is too big. Took that one. Apparently, nothing is going to be easy..

Heres a little info from Bill Ross and myself
Hello Guzzisti,
We are getting really close to Rally -Thirty , and want to update all with some additional info, considerations and needs.
Weather is going to be damn near perfect , highs in the upper 70`s, slowly dropping to the low to mid 50`s overnight based on Santa Ysabel predictions . There is a pool at the resort and we plan to have a nightly group fire, weather permitting.
Traffic going through Escondido to Valley Center will be really backed up on East Valley Parkway near Valley Center Road Friday late Friday afternoon and evening due to construction and rush hour. Over the weekend it can also get backed up a bit due to all the pumpkin picker seasonal traffic to Bate`s Nut Farm. Might be better to avoid that mess and venture another route.
Cafe Moto in San Diego has very generously donated us some fantastic coffee beans and cold brewed coffee. We will have that available with a few snacks. The on site restaurant will also be serving breakfast, lunch and dinner for those interested.
We are bringing some bread stuff and if anyone wants to bring something to share, either with morning coffee or a dessert for after the Sat night barbque, that would be great. Dinner is planned for late afternoon after 5, before 6. Burgers , Dogs, Grillin Beans, Mac N Cheese is on the menu, the restaurant is also open for anyone wanting something different. Donations for food, supplies and the facility will be shameless accepted, but not mandatory.
We could also use a few extra ice chests and ice too from any willing cagers .
There will be a sign up board for anyone willing to lead rides on Saturday, we envision several rides to different places and with different paces. We will also have maps for those who may want to do their own thing, the roads and scenery are pretty hard to beat in any direction.
Look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones ! Thank you.

I`ve got your next round Chuck !
Bill

Thanks, Bill! :boozing:
-
Fingers crossed - looks like I might be there on the Shadow. I think I got the crap out of the carbs and I'll be getting new tires on her in the morning. If the shake down ride works, then I'll be on something bigger than the wife's BV350 (which may also have out dated tires, but I haven't looked at those yet).
I'll worry about the Guzzi shock next week.

I am going to ride up from San Diego early on Saturday morning with my cousin.
Count us in! Thanks for spearheading this Bill.

Will there be any other Scuras there besides myself?

Scud will probably be on his..

You have to have a serious reason to leave Redondo Beach. The only thing you can do without getting on the 405 is to go down the coast.

Assuming the heater hose fix for the breather hose works - I should have my mighty Scura (now renamed "Greaseball") there Friday afternoon. Look for the smoke and drops of oil.

God willing, some of the pictured Arizona Guzzi contingency will be there Friday afternoon about 1-2pm :thumb:   LAKE HENSHAW OR BUST!!

Probably later in the afternoon for me. I'm taking the long road there. Breather hose willing.

I'm waffling! Maybe Friday night only. I gave up my #13 bunk reservation at Norm's cabin but I do have a nice tent. Are there any tent areas open?
-
I hope there are tent spaces still available!?! If not, I'm on the mercy of the cabin guys for floor space or to pitch my tent in front of the cabin.
Been a long cruddy week and it only Wednesday. Looking forward to getting away to clear my head! Inless a new disaster comes up
Sorry Norm, plan to run the EV. Never had it on a long ride and the Eldo needs a bath to be presentable. Next year the Eldo or Ambo will be there!
Tom
-
[Tom H], the bar for who gets to stay in Lucky Cabin #13 just continues to be lowered.
Originally you had to ride in from out of state.
Then we were going to let a guy in who had a dog with Japanese bloodlines, which I figured was close to out of state. Now his bike's in the shop and he's waffling - he might show up for a day in his jeep and bring his tent now.
If you can name three other states, there's a bunk for you.
Just as well about the Eldo, my savoring the thought of being on one again can only last so long, then I'll do it and the antici .... pation will be past.

Ooo that's easy. Italy, Germany and England. what do I win!!

PS: think bikes

*sigh* I swear, the only reason to have multiple bikes is so you can choose which one you want to work on next :violent1:
Went to put tires on the Shadow - nope, carb problem not fixed. Runs fine without a load, but not so good with one. I was able to nurse it up to about 42MPH over a three block distance. And, the wrong front tire (the worst one of the two) was shipped. Apparently Honda put different front tires on various models of the Shadow.
I will be on an Italian steed - borrowing the wife's Piaggio BV350.
See all y'all Friday

Ooh, I like that line. Consider it plagiarized.

I'll be there with my son. I'm trucking my 1943 BSA WM20 because I'm a contrarian, and my son isn't up to a freeway ride all the way from LA. :bike-037:
I'm in cabin #8. I'll bring a cooler and some brewskis.

Taking the Stelvio up to Mothers Kitchen on Palomar tomorrow at lunch time for the best damn club sandwich I've ever had. Will head back down past Henshaw and stop in at the campground to say Hi.

I need a badge saying, Hi, I'm Chuck. Who are you? There's a place in your brain that stores places and faces. Mine took a really big hit when I was a pup. If I don't see someone regularly, I won't recognize them. JJ I'll recognize. I think. John, Scud, Kevin..etc. tell me who you are. It's not that I don't care. .but your face may well be gone.

Cage free make sure you come to this event. It would be nice to meet someone else from Temecula

Before I forget, Mark Etheridge says to tell everybody hey. He would really like to be there, but the drive, and the drive back would be a killer. Not to mention crutching around and keeping people awake at night in the room.

I was looking for an excuse to wear a piece of duct tape with my handle here on it - I suck at remembering names - I blame mine on hitchhiking as a kid and knowing that I wouldn't have to remember this name for more than a few hours.

I'll be around Saturday for sure. Hoping to stop by for a visit on Friday afternoon.

It was one of the most memorable rallies I've attended. :thumb: I'll post a few pix because Dusty said to..

This was the first real "shake down" run for the MZ. I'd only ridden it once out in the Mountains, and it was a cool drizzly day. Iwasn't too comfortable with it, but it turned out to be fine.
When Ifinally found the elusive cabin 13, I was greeted by Norm and Tom H, beer in hand. Here's the Normster..

I passed on the beer because Iwanted to see what the MZ would do, so ran up Palomar mountain. It's been 12 years since I did that. (!) The observatory looks the same, of course.. and the ride up was cosmic still.

Thought to myself, "I think I'm gooing to like this scooter.." after I came back down the mountain.
Back to camp and these ruffians were waiting.. JJ, TomH, and Brian (bbolesaz)with his Scura "Valdez"

True to their word, people brought me beer. Then Norm the Enabler brought a really nice bottle of ta kill ya. It would have been inpolite to refuse, of course.. so much of Friday night is foggy. I remember a fire..and much laughing. talked to jdgretz.. he'd made it on his wife's scooter.
Saturday morning, Norm said I hadn't snored at all.. in fact, Iwas so quiet he was beginning to think he'd go down in the annals of WG as the guy that killed Chuck in Indiana. He *does* snore, however, but I have ear plugs and know how to use them.
After a hearty breakfast at the resort, people started bringing bikes to the parking lot. There was a *nice* gaggle. Sorry, no pix. There were 3 rides planned, a scenic, a ride to the coast, and a "spirited" ride. There were Scuras, LeMans, etc, and a lonely looking MZ .
This is GrisoGirl's Grease O.

She was smooth and confident. I understand that back in the day, she was a fashion model in France..
At any rate, our spirited ride took about 6 hours, and I have no idea of where we went. I bonded with the MZ on it. :thumb:
When we returned, Tim (Scud) asked if I'd like to do the South grade on Palomar (much twistier than the east grade I'd already done..) "Absolutely!" So, he led a flight of two Scuras, a LeMans Mk3, and a putt putt MZ. It was a hoot. We took a break at Mother's on the way up..

To start with I was a bit nervous when I realized I was in cabin 13 on Friday the 13th with Chuckie and Norman. Not sure where this was gonna go. We also had Brian, so between us I felt we could fend them off on Friday the 13th.
Chuck pretty much covered it and much better pictures!! Great people and great bikes!!!!
To put a bit of a story, I rode up to the hard to find Cabin 13. All others were clearly marked excerpt this one. Well I found Norm out back and he invited me to stay. Glad I did!!!!! Except for the woodpeckers that left the side of the cabin looking like Bonnie and Clyde had target practice on it and the rustling sound inside the wall during the night.
Except for that it was GREAT COMPANY!!!!!!
I want to thank ALL that put this on!!!! And to Norm that took this wayward soul in!!!!!
If this comes up next year, I'll pen it in, not pencil!!!!
Tom
-
Just an observation , Norm "looks" normal
Dusty
-
Yes, [Dusty], apparently
norman normal for me is standing around with a drink in hand.
When I was a much younger man, I incurred the wrath of an old gypsy woman (her daughter and a bunch of black and white film was involved) and she placed a curse on me. " There will never be any photographs of you in motion " and it has remained to this day.
I am in the first rally picture in the thread. The curse lingers on. You can see a fraction of Josie, the Bassa Rat, at my shoulder.
I rolled in around eleven and [groundhog105] immediately materialized and informed me I was first in, and offered me a cold beer. I declined since the need for breakfast was in the queue ahead of that.
As [Tom H] mentioned, Lucky Cabin #13 is the stealth location - all the others could be identified by a small child, but you have to ride around ours for a while looking for the painted over chisel marks.
Tom was first to wrestle his bike over the gullys - all the other cabins have driveways, but ours was apparently designated for dirtbikes. We immediately began comparing sensors and hardware - and that was what EVERYBODY did all weekend. My first rally, and I enjoyed it greatly. I'm just glad we weren't all surgeons, or it would have been a "thoracic alignment deviation" study or something all weekend. Oh, and I took the rally award for "worst fuel economy ". The concern was palpable.
Chuck rolled in next, and we exchanged gang handsigns before he forded the supercross arena surrounding our palatial digs. One finger, then three on the gripping hand (Larry Niven reference), and he knew he was in the right place.
I promptly stole his key. I felt bad in a few minutes and returned it, but it was a fun moment. Oh, and in visiting some old friends who live in that area, I left my car/house/work keys there. Karma is a bitch .... Gotta go back up the hill next weekend.
[bbolezaz] rolled in next, and got the fold out couch, aka torture rack. The cabin is alleged to sleep seven, but they'd have to be small and friendly.
Yes, I thought I'd killed Chuck. He helped me greatly with the beer and tequila, and had warned me that he snored. I was last into the cabin, and sneaking around in the dark trying not to wake anybody, I couldn't tell if Chuck was in bed or not. Silence. Finally towards dawn there were a half dozen snores, and I quit worrying I'd be known as " the guy who killed Chuck "
Chuck pointed out Richard to me, and told me he was a VERY FAST rider. He said don't try to keep up with him, and if you find you are keeping up with him, slow down.
-
Dusty
-
LMAO Norm. You can write, wish I could do the same.
Well we were wondering where the seventh would sleep. When I got up and was going for my boots, I found a slide out or something mattress under my bed. Maybe my bed converted to a bunk bed, or you just slid this out. On the 13 13 thing, I remember a movie about Moma being rolled out from under a bed and a really bad case of Deliverance going on. Glad I found that on the way out
Did I say thank you for the room Norm?? If not, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
Tom
-
Tom, I think you can keyboard a tale just fine.
Yes, you thanked me for the room, and despite my efforts to cover that expense, you and every resident forced cash on me, ruining my only nonprofit exemption I had planned for this year.

For a moment, it seemed that a dark cloud would threaten the event... but it turned out to be three Scuras:
Here's a few of the bikes on Saturday morning, including JJ's, which stands out like, well, a... yellow Centauro.
This one caught my eye.
Chuck - at this point, you were on top of Mount Laguna, going North on Sunrise Highway. Bob led us on the following roads: Mesa Grande, 79 South, Wynola Road, 78 East, 79 South, Old Highway 80 East, S1 (Sunrise Highway) North, then 79 North and back almost the same way.
And here is a view down at a few turns on Palomar Mountain's South Grade.
This would make a fine stable: Scura, Eldorado, Daytona RS, V7, Griso.
Another picture of the Daytona, because... we don't really need an excuse to take pictures of Daytona's right?
And I do not know who owns this. But I apologize for drooling on it.

A very fun weekend. Good to see the folks from Arizona again and to meet a bunch of folks from way south in SoCal. Wish I could have been on the Norge, but at least I did make it - and on an Italian scoot.
Time to head back to the garage to see if I can make some progress on that bolt.
Thanks to all who pulled this together - I'm looking forward to doing this again next year, along with Cottonwood.

Some of my pix from the weekend.

Mike's Scura was acting up on the way up the hill. It had recently been serviced and after some debug, Scud's sharp eye noted that the rubber tubes had been blown off of the fuel injector bodies, allowing the bike to suck air. We suspect someone forgot to tighten the clamps.

Brag all you want to - I'll bet you couldn't use as many gallons of gas as that would take me.
Reading the Guzzi Diag thread now

I really like that car/trike. Would like to know more about it. Have ridden in a Morgan Guzzi but nothing with a flip up roof and fat tires like that 1.

It is called a "Blackjack-Zero" (kit car) and this one was highly modified and customized.

Enjoyed meeting the Friday night crowd, clutch cable and two rallies in the same weekend was perhaps overly ambitious this time.

Thx Chuckie for posting the pix. I see Rich had another chunk of wood in case he needed for back-up. Had a good day at the Ironman Championships.

I've had that happen twice in my career during a "Road Trip" -
First time, a snapped clutch cable on my '83 BMW R80RT in Glia Bend, AZ,....wife went to the dealer in Scottsdale and drove 3.5 hours to bring me a new one...)
Second time a throttle cable on my '83 850 Le Mans near San Simeon, CA...found a mechanic near Paso Robles who brazed a new end on the cable to get me home.!!
Carried a new spare on the bike both times after that...never happened again on either bike!

Not my first rodeo either, had spare clutch & throttle cables. What I didn't count on was running into my first 12mm nuts on the rig. Several folk had some needle nose and adjustables (all to large to get at it) and one fella saved me and had a stubby 12 along in his kit. I picked up one on my way to the next rally (Sidecars) north of HelLA. As road repairs go twasn't much but lack of a spanner ate up much of the time till next year anyway.

I recognize that wrench. Glad it worked for you, I did retrieve it from the clubhouse.

Thanks again it worked a treat. Despite the high millage wear, so far I have found the bike easy to work on in comparison to my Ural.

Vibrating a little, was it?
-
I hear you... This "snapped" about 400 miles after I rode the rig from Texas to San Diego. When my Ural had the equivalent issue I could feel it and it was exposed. I suspect it gave fair warning but with the sidecar there is a lot going on and it probably masked it as I was still learning and getting a feel for it.
When it let go it was obvious something full on broke.... But the "ears" rattling around inside the swing arm let me nurse it home 5 miles... When I took it apart I was astounded by what fell out...
The right side swing arm bearing was also in a similar state..

BTDT more than once on different bikes. The vibration in the right peg is the hint.
