Title: Disc upgrade for my Bassa?
Post by: normzone on July 17, 2017, 05:08:47 PM
I'm wondering what is the disc of choice compatible with my Bassa - Is there something ideal that will drop in without any modifications required that meets the definition of full floating and is accessible via Ebay other avenues?

My local shop recommended the cheap option, somebody else's Ducati takeoffs, but what I see on Ebay looks very high mile. And a set of "snowflakes" for $400 is not all that painful, but the bobbin design doesn't make it look as though there's very much float designed into it.

And why do motorcycle discs have to float, while automobile discs have no such method? And what about Naomi?

I couldn't find the Brembo snowflake on their website and thought they had been replaced by the Serie Oro.
Are those snowflakes on eBay genuine brembo discs?

rotors float to help prevent warping. why are you getting new rotors, for cosmetics?

so what is wrong with the stock setup. if you need more get new brake lines and HH pads. have you replaced the 16 year old fluid?

I was thinking the same

Thanks, [yogidozer]. I've got one unhappy disc up front, the one that engages when you use the rear brake. The front end pogos when I use the rear brake.

Good question, [Steph].

flush the bobbins with brake cleaner while turning them too if they don't float. then scrub the crap out of the surface with coarse then fine sand paper / emery cloth.

My front does same thing, done all the bobbins, it's warped a wee bit. EBC Wave roters is what I'm doing.

Thank you, [Vagrant]. Been there, tried that.

I added the Snowflakes with the 4mm disk vs the OEM 3.5 on my Bassa......added Speigler full floating buttons and had the gold anodizing polished off the rotors.

So with wallet in hand, I'm evaluating the options. It looks like the Speigler folks above sell gourmet discs, priced at about $330 for one, whereas about $400 will get you two alleged Ducati snowflakes.

And if my disc in question is just stuck (not floating), I thought " Hey, I could just swap out some of those magical floating buttons and I'd be good !"

Then I looked closer at the disc/buttons on my bike. That does not look like a user friendly "just swap some parts" operation.

Does anybody see any red flags regarding this disc from EBay? The disc appears to be readily available new in pairs, or singly used, but rarely a new single disc.

I put a pair of Grimeca discs from an Aprilia RSV4 on my Vintage. The diameter, offset, and bolt pattern are the same, but the pair weighs about 2.2 lbs less than the stockers. The reduction in unsprung weight allows me to use less damping and creates a better ride. I bought a used pair that were as new from my dealer for $200.

What wrong with the updated genuine Brembo Serie Oro (apart from the cost of course)?

Please forgive me while I educate myself in public here on the forum ....

In looking for an example I found this showing the difference twixt the alleged floating my stock disc delivers, and the upgrade available:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJPCy2AsULo

[John Ulrich] told me via PM that he'd upgraded his with some gourmet buttons that he'd shimmed up a bit because they " play Jingle Bells at walking speed " - as illustrated in the linked video.

I've gone from being okay with spending $$$, to looking to see what less costly options were available, and now I'm frustrated and willing to just wave the credit card at somebody if they'll make the problem go away. Jingle Bells doesn't bother me - is there any downside to that?

I am only looking to upgrade one disc at this time, since the one that gets used more (hand brake lever) doesn't have the problem. But I figure new lines can't be far away, since the bike IS a 1999.

Please, if I'm missing more than the usual amount of details on this important subject, feel free to clue me in.

And here's the disc [Steph] is talking about - doesn't appear to be available without shipping cross the pond.

Do you have to mod with the custom buttons to get the wide float the video shows? Is the stock from the box acceptable for these suppliers? And how much float is enough? Is there a float spec rating suppliers brag about on their box?

Well, the hunt for a new disc is over .... at least for a day or so.

I gave the bike it's usual quarterly pressure washing, focusing on the oil leaks (effective), the wheels (waste of time), and road grime everywhere else.

I gave the discs a thorough kicking with the toes of my Gasolinas - mighty weapons in their own right, just to let them know how I felt about their non-floating selves, and gave them a cursory wash and rinse, maybe five seconds each.

The pulsing is gone. We'll see about tomorrow.    :weiner:

If you are thinking about new brake lines, consider the DIY options from MG Cycle (Magnum) or Revival Cycles (Goodrich).  Easy, safe, customizable and very economical compared to pre-made.

Good afternoon, fellow Guzzistas .....

I'm reviving this thread after putting a full can of brake wash over, under, through and around my rotor bobbins, then drowning the offending components with the car wash pressure wand.

While the disc does not bob the front end at road speeds, it still pogos slightly at low speed.

Like so many of us, I wish I was made out of money.

Norman... Take your hand off the pressure washer, stand back, and nobody gets hurt.

Seriously, you can do damage with them.. unless you are *very* careful. Keep away from anywhere that it will drive water, dirt, grit, into places you don't want it. Bearings, electrical, fuel tank, master cylinders, etc. you get the picture.
What you are most likely seeing is pad buildup from too gentle braking. It's the left side, correct? Doesn't happen with the right side that is controlled by the hand lever? Make a few aggressive stops with the foot brake. <shrug>

Thanks [Chuck in Indiana] -

I am always careful with the pressure washer - had a buddy who ruined the crank bearings on his mountain bike by getting too aggressive on a grease stain by the seal with it and some waterbase degreaser.

I probably did more risk by getting brake cleaner on the front wheel bearing seal.

Pad buildup from too gentle braking ? Alright, I've tried everything else except power tools with abrasives on it, can't hurt to pump the hell out of it on the way home tonight.

Thanks also for the link to [Orange Guzzi] - while being priced nicely that disc does not appear to have any significant floating capability - the button design appears much like the ones on my stock disk.

By the way, is that stock disc a unit forever, or can the disc be separated from the carrier and full float buttons installed by a neophyte such as myself? It looks like a one piece forever unit to me, but I've been wrong before. I have a spare stock disc I could get experimental with ....

Well, I got on it aggressively at speed a bunch of times on the way home - it's apparent when the apportioning  (?) valve engages the front disc as the front end will squat down. But when all was said and done, on the surface streets after my exit still the same challenge, front end pogoing when using the foot brake.

I entertained the fantasy of it being the apportioning valve engaging intermittently, or having some kind of a threshold behavior, but given that the symptom goes away when a) the front disc is freshly washed, and b) for a while after changing out the disc to a "known good" one acquired from [fotoguzzi], it keeps coming back to the floaters not floating enough theory.

I watched some youtube videos yesterday of people converting their - how shall I refer to this .... non-floating? Barely floating? discs to having full float buttons. THAT did not look like fun - mostly drill and destroy on the old button assembly. And it's amusing listening to people say that the "jingle bells" effect of full floaters is unsuitable for a street bike - It's a Guzzi, for crying out loud - if you can handle the valve noise, a little ring-ding-a-ling on the front wheel should fit right in.

And my fun units are going to be diverted to computer gear, it would appear. The base station at my apartment has gone south, and I'll need to move soon (demo and reno at the apartment complex), so we're discussing becoming a two computer household. Logic says that would give us redundancy in case of a computer fail, allow us both to be online if we so chose, and one of them could be a GuzziDiag - compatible laptop.

But I'll keep looking for the cost - effective full floater - some of those high mileage Ducati take-offs on Ebay are starting to look pretty good.
