Title: Is there something wrong with this forum?
Post by: Lcarlson on July 22, 2017, 11:10:54 AM
I tried posting this yesterday. When I open a thread, I can see only the OP and one reply, regardless of how many replies are logged. What's causing this?

No problem here.    I occasionally get a "The Server Is Under High Stress, Try Again Later" error message when I do a search or sort of some kind, but that's just the nature of the beast.

I've heard a couple people mention the problem you have, but it always seems to be at the user end; nothing at the server end typically causes that.    Clean up cookies, browser restart, etc ....

Clearing cookies, history and browsing data, then rebooting my device (iPad) seems to have resolved the problem. Thx to all who made suggestions.

Are you running Firefox per chance?  I've had issues with Firefox lately, not being able to see posted photos.  Switching to Chrome solved it, but I prefer to use Firefox.  I'm hoping there will be a fix out soon.

Sorry to say Wildguzzi is in denial but for days now my PC Matic tells me after a few minutes that this forum is not right and cuts this off my computer.  Problem is something about a remote computer , kbntx.ch, Amazon, 9/5/16 to 10/16/17.

Fake news.  It's the pc-matic that's the problem, not WG.  Study up on the way pc-matic works, Randy.

A problem customers of mine used to run into this time of month was their internet would slow down to abysmal speeds, their web pages wouldn't load completely, and pictures often didn't appear.  It was usually due to them going over their download quotas.  The ISP would choke their feeds.  Does your service have quotas?

When my computer slows down I have PC Matic clean it up and all is good again.  :azn:

The way it works is the proof.  It doesn't detect viri like virtually all the others do.  Instead of arguing from ignorance, read up on it and see what its really doing.  You'll be disappointed.

Pc-Matic doesn't do anything with your slow computer that you couldn't do for yourself.  It's money spent for utilities that are already in your operating system.

I had a different virus protection before PC Matic and my computer works far better for much less $ than it did before PC Matic.  I admit I'm mostly ignorant of how to use my  computer.   Maybe if I had your computer skills I wouldn't need something like PC Matic but I don't and am not even capable of learning more about how to use my computer.   That's why I have a 100% disability. My brain is damaged, especially when it comes to short term memory.

Folks,
There is no problem with the board.  Zero. None. Zilch. Nada.  I have about 8 computers and checked it on all of them.  Also confirmed with the hosts that there has not been any infections on the server.

Browsers are notorious for screwing up and causing problems.  A simple scan of programs like Malwarebytes, Rogue Killer, Adwcleaner, etc will clean a lot of the crap up and make your worlds so much easier.  Not to mention refreshes, resets and clearing history, cookies, cache, etc.

As for the PC Matic argument. I love all the computers that come into my shop with that joke of a software on it.  It keeps me in business cleaning it up for customers.  It's a program that hijacks your computer, so when you don't renew it, your computer will "magically" slow down until your renew license is reactivated.  You get what you pay for, I'll just leave it at that.

Believe me, if the board had a problem then I would do as I have been doing since 1998 and I would fix it asap.

Good night and hope all is well,
Luap

Sorry for wasting bandwidth here. After trying all suggestions, including switching browsers and devices, the aggravating problem persisted. But seeing the problem on multiple devices led me to do what I probably should have tried first -- I rebooted my router. Problem solved. At least, this may be instructive to somebody else down the line....

Thanks for the suggestion, but my present router has worked flawlessly for years with the forum. It doesn't seem likely that it would just suddenly stop doing so. Since I have seen no difference in the way it handles any other site or application, it seems that it has to be WG-specific. I just can't imagine how.
Title: Re: Is there something wrong with this forum?

Sure, a router can go bad after years of service.  Antivirus can break, too.  Internet Explorer is now obsolete and isn't completely supported by all opsys and websites (don't know if WG is one).

I think you're being hasty to quit the forum over it.  Did you contact your ISP?  Do you have a pet geek who can look at it?

I guess you guys are probably right. My modem is not new and not up to the latest standard. Also, when I access the forum with my Android phone with WiFi turned off, no problem.  That would seem to implicate the router. So, I guess,  time to pull the trigger on a new one.

Call your isp first and see if there is a setting that they have changed or that maybe has slipped on your router before throwing it away.  There could be an easy fix, when examined from their end.

Also, there is a site called speedtest.net that can tell you if your performance is lagging.

I can't feature it being a modem or router issue as the way I read it, your returns are uniformly selective and a router/modem problem should either present as all/none or random but not repetitively selective.

That sounds like settings or internal computer program interpretations.

I haven't been impressed by this Ookla speedtest for a while.  It shows great results which aren't necessarily reflected in the real world.

Here's my favourite:  http://speedof.me/

Just out of curiosity, how did you see Dusty's reply? I thought you could only see one response after the OP. So, I'm slightly confused.

Like others suggested, your router is more than likely the culprit. In my 20+ years doing tech support, I've seen routers last a couple days to multiple years.  They're all made in China, so it's really a crap-shoot.  Buy a $20 one for a test. If it's confirmed, you can exchange it for a newer better one.  If not, you're out $20.

I do eventually see all the replies, but there is an unacceptable delay. When I open a thread, I see the OP and one reply right away; then in about 2 - 3 minutes I see the rest of the replies. Pretty peculiar and beyond my ability to figure out. In any case I have ordered a new top-rated router, which I hope will be the fix. It was probably time for a new one anyway.

If your internet setup is typical, you have either a cable modem or a DSL modem upstream of the router.  It's what actually connects you to the internet.  Your router is simply a device to allow multiple clients (other computers) share the same internet connection.  So, I suggest you remove the router from the mix and plug the modem (whichever you have) directly into the computer, via the network cable port.  That will confirm/deny the router as the villain.  If the problem persists, and it's happening for all devices using the router, then the problem is with the modem or the path out to the world.  That could include a bad feed into the house or simply being over quota.

Run the router-elimination test.  Shut down everything -- computers, router, and modem before starting.  Then simply plug the cable from the modem to the computer -- or if you're cabled in, the computer to the modem.  Probably doesn't matter unless you've got a flopped router cable.  Then use the computer one for sure.  If you've got something unusual or have difficulty IDing the cable, check back and we'll sort it out.

Turn on the modem first, and let it settle down.
Turn on the computer.  Log in and let it settle down.
test the internet.

This is not something like a hijacked browser or an out-of-control antivirus, since it affects all the connected devices.  It's an upstream issue.  I hope you fix it rather than dropping WG.

Violating my promise, one more observation: sometimes, but not always, a banner advertisement appears after the OP and the first reply (right where my reply downloads hang up).
