Title: EV center stand vs convert centerstand

I have had a number of converts. The center stand always took a lot of force to deploy. I see that the ev model had a longer arm and wonder if it was a lot easier to deploy. I had a 84 Cal 2 with a very long arm but I don;t remember how easier it was to use.Any one here have an opinion on the differences?I am a lot weaker than 15 years ago.

Neither is particularly hard to deploy if you know how.  Don't use the outside lever for more than moving the stand down.  Reach in and step on the "J" end of the centerstand for easy launch.  The longer EV arm sort of puts your foot into the same position and this two-step isn't so important.

However, if you install shorter shocks or a lower profile tire, then the geometry gets a lot worse.

 :1: with what Pat says.  When deploying the centerstand, it's more of deploying the stand and moving the bike sideways than lifting the bike.  Emphasis working the legs rather than lifting with the arms.

Why are they not interchangeable?Guzzi tech says they will fit. What is the truth? Help.

So you are saying that even with the ev stand you don't push on the arm to lift the bike. I knew about the reaching under the bike to lift but thought the ev would be like a normal centerstane, eg Goldwing.

They are different lengths to accommodate the different frames.  The EV stand crossbar will interfere with the Convert rear wheel.  The arm, as you call it, interferes with the pipes.

Little off topic but I'm a new EV owner and I can't get my bike on the centerstand! The arm sticks out away too far from the bike and when I treat it like a BMW the bike wants to fall on me!  Pull up or rearward with handle while pushing straight down on lever nub is not working for me.

That big long arm that sticks out from the center stand- I cut mine shorter, heated it and bent it into a different shape. I have a folding handle that bolts to the frame, so I grab the handle with my right hand, my left hand on the handle bar to steady the bike, and with my right foot on the center stand arm this puts me in a slight crouch(back straight, knees bent) and I just stand up straight- using my legs- and up it goes. Seems easy. I have an 01 Jackal, for ref.

those are great, MGCyce might sell them.. when I had EV's and Bassa's I used a little loop of rope around the passenger peg to get the just right angle to pull it up.

I got a folding Harley footpeg and mounted it to fold down instead of up on that flat plate near the rear shock mount.  Works good, and I get to say I have Harley parts in my guzzi.

Do it like pehayes describes :1: if you try it with just the part that sticks out to get it on the ground without reaching in to the j part you could throw your back out, ask me how I know.

Secret is to roll the bike backwards then stand on the (stand) extension while lifting the seat handle on my Cali 100i. Effortless once you get the technique right.

I just went out to the garage and tried Patrick's method for putting an EV on it's centerstand.

It worked o.k., but now my shoe is dirty😕.

I think I'll keep doing it by standing on the arm and rolling the bike back up onto the stand.

All the seller can be expected to know is what the stand came from.  He can't know what it doesn't fit unless he's had the two side-by-side.  So don't fault him.

This is what I made for my other Convert. It is effortless.

Sorry for the delay in my answer.  Got distracted with other stuff.  My expertise sucks sometimes so I make it up in having the different models available for comparison.  Had to go luck at the different models start w/the Ambo to the Cali 1100i.

Modifying the c-stand on a Convert is probably the best if you're not good with the technique.  The right foot is the best way to get the bike up wiith it on the c-stand.  The early 80's bikes with the shorter J throw arm allows for use of the heel and toe use on c-stand. 

Late 80's, early 90's, the arm got longer with less area for the toe of your foot.  Still better to use the rear of your foot that way you can stand up and lift with legs and not your arms. 

Never really noticed the difference in the c-stands.  I always tend to stand on the feet of the c-stand when putting the bike up.

What RodeKill said. Side by side, left one is the factory 1981 G5 and the one to the right is off the Cali 2. The crossbar on the Cali 2 is lower hitting the wheel on the G5 or Convert. Swingarm on the Cali 2 is longer, so the rear wheel is more pushed back clearing that bar. Also, the stand itself is a bit taller.

i just this morning tryed to put a ev centerstand on my 850 t...nope wont work! question is does the centerstand have to be on the bike?like does it make the bike more solid?

On a number of the bikes in the herd, I've taken the c-stand off.  I have 2 c-lifts, 1 bike lift and an engine hoist.  I don't need a center stand on a regular basis and they add some weight to the bikes.

I figured it out FOR ME!  Stock 98 EV.  I have not been able to get it up. On the stand mind you. No pills for the stand action lol.  It was disheartening. I tried skmthing new. Push down on the end of the knob that's way out there in space.  Push down/stand on it like it's a GS BMW   While grabbing the hinge bolt of the passenger footpeg.  BOOM!!! Up it goes with no issue. I was trying to grab the rear luggage rack side handle and roll rearwards.  Wasn't working.  The lift point needs to be lower on the CG.  Someone mentioned a length of rope.   Something like that.   I'm super happy thank you!!!

You can park the EV on everything but quick sand s0 why would you ever have to use the center stand except for when you are in your shop? In your shop run the rear tire on a 1X4 and the center stand will fall down. OK, I know this is too easy, but I only have an 8th grade education from a one room country school.

I have a question. Farm boys have access to a more varied supply of things to work with than us city slickers. Are you referring to an honest 1 x 4 or a common 3/4' x 3 1/2" piece of white wood? Some times that 1/4" matters.  :smiley:

I use a section "2x8" then rock it left then right to put a length of "2x4" underneath it.  Easier than dragging the bike lift, c-lift or engine hoist out.  I have all those options too.

If you don't have wood, then use the draw bar from the Massey Ferguson that is sitting in the corner. :laugh:.

Most of you know I've been on Guzzis since '71 and I've never seen a Guzzi fall over that had the police style side stand. I can't tell you the amount of Guzzis that were parked on the center stand  and blew over, sank in the asphalt, etc.
