Woodruff's Store and Pie Shop on VA130 near Elon, Virginia (3297 Elon Rd, Monroe, VA).

The baker's 101 year old Mom holds court there most days.   Pies are legendary.

Only cafe in Dover, KS on HWY4 SW of Topeka.
Only cafe in Durham, KS on K-15 about 25 miles S of Abilene.
Carriage House in Yoder, KS on K96 S of Hutchinson about 12 miles.
All serve excellent pies and usually have a variety.

I HEAR the pies are pretty good at Portage Pie in Westfield, NY, home of the WNY Guzzi Rally in the Vineyard.

I can't actually say for sure, because if I was to ever BUY a pie, I'd never get another one from The Little Woman, & that's not gonna happen, 'cuz she TRULY makes THE BEST pies in the world - TRULY...

It is a nice place to ride to, however....

Strawberry/Rhubarb at Traverse Pie Company, 14 locations in MI

How could I forget a Pasty pie? Must be north side of Mackinac bridge for one of those.

I'll bet it isn't.

I'll bet it's MY wife's kitchen!       Thousands of pie crusts and she knows how to get them perfect .....

Maybe a Guzzi pie cook-off is in order; chili is SO H-D.   Pecan, coconut cream, chocolate, apple, lemon meringue, the possibilities are endless ...

Tell me there's no such thing as a radish pie.   Tell me it's really rhubarb.

I planted too many radishes last year, and we had a lot of them.   We tried anything to keep from just eating them raw and salted, which we'd tried too many of.

We found a recipe for lightly coating them in oil and salt and roasting them in a pan until they were cracked open and lightly brown.

They were HORRIBLE!   They even smelled bad, and tasted worse.

No more cooked radishes for me, even if someone surrounds them with a pie crust ....

Stopped at Pietown, NM a week ago Saturday and was longing for some blueberry. The didn't have any... just mixed berry, blackberry, dark cherry, apple, lemon, and a half dozen others. Not the best place for pie, perhaps, but very close. If only they hadn't run out of blueberry. Not bad for a tiny town out in nowhere. The picture is about 30 miles south of Pietown.

To my mind, it's necessary to specify the kind of pie before rushing to judge the establishment. When I visit a pie specialist, and it's in season, I always ask for rhubarb pie. If they have it, I'll always try it. If they don't (and it's rhubarb season), then I have to believe their heart just isn't really in it.

That being said, you can get a fine peach pie (rhubarb, too) at the Verellen Orchard fruit stand on Van Dyke Hwy north of 29 Mile Road in Romeo , MI. The peaches come from out back. Wandering further afield gets you to the Achatz Pie Company in Armada, MI. They have other stores and sell in local supermarkets too, but I prefer the storefront locations. This area is a good starting point as there are several orchards and a lot of fresh ingredients nearby.

Of all the places I've been in Utah its tuff to beat the Burr Trail Grill (in Boulder, Utah) for pies. As a bonus, the Hells Back Bone Grill is a block or two away and is consistently voted in the upper echelon of Utah  restaurants (although The Burr Trail Grill's offerings can stand on their own any day).  I believe Hells Backbone was voted #1 this year by one of our larger state newspapers (seem to remember that).

Honorable mention for the cherry pie category: My mother-in-laws. Made from scratch from her grandmothers recipe she brought west to Glasgow Montana around 1900. Unstated but binding family rule in effect that large projects requiring my labor (yard fertilization-tree trimming-loading trailers for dump runs etc.) are paid in fresh pie.

Here in McKinney Texas is a place called bill smiths cafe.  Been there for 50 years or such.  Decent food but there's a waitress there that makes all the pies from scratch. Coconut cream pie is to die for! Anyone comes here for pie call me!! Instead of the usual Milwaukee ruffage out front we'll have some real bikes out there! Lol

I'm thinking there must be a place in Montana for HUCKLEBERRY pie that I'm missing, but I can't remember where we stopped last time thru...may have been Red Lodge...

LeRoy, I agree 100% on the rhubarb.  My grandmother made it with just a touch of sugar, no more than that. Up here in Massachusetts, it's hard to find rhubarb pie without strawberries and with it's natural tartness.

And....because of my fondness for Gooseberry pie, I just planted six gooseberry bushes, with one cutting to be planted next year.

Your walking distance and mine are quite different, Landis. (And it's uphill!) my advice would be to stuff your saddlebags before you get to Moto Richmond -- and buy enough to share with the hungry denizens when you arrive.

There used to be a pie shop in New Cumberland, WV. If she didn't have it, come back in 45 minutes and it would be ready.

I hauled to cafes for a number of years. Some would get the frozen Mrs. Smiths pies and advertise them as "home baked". Some sold a lot of cases Mrs. Smiths pies every week.

IMHO The pies in Pie Town are over rated and too expensive for me.

Enjoy,
Tex

It IS uphill but it's right on the edge of Church Hill, about 2 miles maybe, a 40 minute walk.

When I'm waiting for service at the shop, and I've done all the getting-in-the-way and tire-kicking that the shop can stand, I'll take off and walk somewhere, usually in Manchester to see if there's any new interesting scruffy little Caribbean cafe or something.

Next time, Broad Street and the Proper Pie Shop!

My brother-in-law from across the pond tried to explain to me why you would wrap potatoes in pastry, but I just wasn't gettin' it...  I get the meat part, especially a nice homemade chicken pot pie, but all those carbs make me fat just thinking about 'em. I'm not much for pierogies either...

I'd rather wait 'til the end & have pie.....  ;^)

Being married to one of the world’s best pie makers (and nobody makes a better pie crust than my Fay), we seldom buy pies "outside".    Her specialties are apple, pecan, chocolate, lemon meringue, coconut, and coconut cream.

But we were our for a ride yesterday, the purpose of which was to ride to the National Forest Ranger Station in Natural Bridge Station, Virginia, which is the nearest place where they sell Lifetime Senior Passes for the National Parks in the US.   The price is still $10 (and has been since 1982), but it’s going up to $80 soon (as discussed otherwhere on this very board), and so we figured we’d better get ours now, it’s the bargain of the century.

No prettier rides than the one from my house over Balcony Falls to Natural Bridge ..

So having got our passes, we stopped for lunch at the Natural Bridge General Store.

It’s just hard for us to take pictures of our food.   I know that it’s a tradition here and I do it whenever I remember, but I’ll never get over my antipathy toward looking like a social media weeny who lives in their smartphone.   So you’ll just have to take my word that my reuben sandwich and Fay’s chicken salad were EXCELLENT …. !

We didn’t get dessert, and a good thing too, because on the way home we stopped HERE:

Today her twin daughters run the place as a Pie Shop known far and wide for the quality of their pies.  Since Fay is an expert pie maker, we’re “hard graders” when it comes to pies, but I can tell you that THESE are as good (I won’t say “better” although I might mean that) as any I’ve ever had.

We were too busy eating our blueberry-strawberry pie, and our buttermilk pie, to take pictures, but you know what a pie looks like, and they have 25 different kinds to try.

And then it was time to leave …. with us reflected in the window behind a Bible verse.   While we were there, the daughters and Mama broke out in an acapella Gospel song that was the equal of anything you’d hear recorded anywhere, but we didn’t record it – no good at cameras ...

So that’s why we didn’t fix a pie at home!

If you're within 200 miles of Elon, VA, it's worth a day trip.

Now I have a Quest!

In search of the Best Pie Shop east of Folsom.  because going west the roads are boring for a bit

I see many slices of pie in my future!

First stop Andre's Bakery in Amador, Ca  I usually go there for the Bread and Cinnamon rolls

http://www.andraesbakery.com/

so are Tarts considered pies?  (http://www.andraesbakery.com/wpimages/wp1d4040b4_05_06.jpg)

Lynn's Restaurant or down the street at Lynn's pie shop.  Or better yet take the 6 mile ride on Santa Rosa Creek Road to Lynn's Farm Store & enjoy a piece of berry pie there.

I have reached the stage of my life that I relish the thought of a motorcycle quest (I am going to see the eclipse on the Stelvio). But what shall I ride to afterwards? Perhaps for the pies. There seems to be a wealth of info on the best pie places, and I find that one of the things that I like most in life is stopping for a cup of coffee and a piece of pie. Did that in Reserve and Pietown, NM recently. Maybe I should head towards Texas to try these places, and just keep going...

I didn't know it, but turns out PBS did an hour on "pie shops".

"Woodruffs" is at 18:00 and runs about 5 minutes.   They got it right ...

If you make it as far as Houston, send up a flare, I"m sure we can round up quite a few Guzzi Riders / Pie Lovers to do a local Pie Run and give you a warm welcome here.

My mom & pop made the best pies ever!  Mom was the Queen of fillings, and dad the King of tasty, flakey crusts.  Sadly, they left the mortal kitchen much too soon (59 & 60).   After losing 90+ pounds, five years ago, I rarely bake.   If I make it, I have to eat it, and that's how I got big in the first place.   :food:

Here in Arizona, I'd say Rock Springs, Cafe, a "bit" outside of Phoenix, in Black Canyon City, is the place to go.  There, I skip the meal, and eat only pie.  Worth every bite!

If you're ever in Sonoma County, CA., you'll find plenty of excellent places to pack your pie-hole, and enough good riding to last a lifetime.  My two favorites pie spots are just down the road from where I was hatched, and were my parent's goto when time was too tight for homemade.

Kozlowski Farm, in Forestville, has many tasty fresh fruit pies.  A bonus is you can find their preserves at Walmart!  A good day was made with that discovery.

Sebastopol used to be the Gravenstein Apple Capital of California, and Mom's Apple Pie does the locally developed apple proud!  It's only five minutes up the road from Kozlowski's, making it an easy twofer.

These also happen to be on the way to/from the area's best, and most beautiful twisties.  Redwoods, scenic valleys, small towns, and ocean views are all within 30 minutes or so.  If your into wine, the tasting us usually free in Sonoma, whereas you pay in Napa.  Besides, our coastal county is more diverse, both in climate, and culture.

Chappell Hill Bakery and Deli, Chappell Hill, TX.
At the intersection of US 290 and FM 1155.
Great BBQ as well, so you can cover two of the four food groups.

Another vote for Norske Nook with locations in NW Wisconsin in some great cycle country.  I believe the pies are made in the night at Osseo (the original) and transported daily to the outlying restaurants.  I live in Rice Lake and can say they lose nothing by the 2 hours in the trip!  The original pie lady was on David Letterman and was quite charming.  Some additional information:

Yesterday I made it to Datil, but first went past and headed to Pietown to have a piece of pie. They had a mixed berry that was superb, and also had the NM Apple (included pinons with the apple). While there,  another rider came in for Pie. Met the fellow that I was destined to meet, I guess... Jonathan, an artist from Taos on a 1973 Eldorado police bike... a real beauty. Was invited to join him for a 100 mile ride south from Quemado and back to Datil. And, I also have a '73 CHP bike I need to restore. That was a great pie stop! What it did for me was to inspire me to finish the shop, sell the old Buick, and start getting back to restoring more loopframes (I have 6). I needed that

Had some visiting friends from Vienna, Austria this weekend...

One of their gifts was a delicious Hotel Sacher Torte - perhaps one of the best cakes to accompany a cup of coffee anywhere.  Not exactly pie, but since we were not out pie hunting, it will do nicely!

If your travels ever take you to Vienna, do indulge in a piece and some delicious coffee.  Es schmeckt sehr gut diese Torte!

With all due respect, I'm beginning to think of the Norske Nook here in Wisconsin as the Starbucks of pie. Their slices are enormous and not really spectacular in flavor. (Kind of like what Starbucks did to the classic macchiato, one of my favorites.)

My new favorite Wisconsin pie destination is one I just found today: Irma's Kitchen, in Argyle, a small town near the southern border. The small slice of red raspberry pie was intensely flavorful, though rather runny, and had been made in the kitchen of the restaurant by the woman who settled up at the cash register, Irma I presume. $4.75 with a cup of coffee, and tax.

It will now be a regular destination for my forays into the Driftless Region. Don't tell everybody about it.

East of Pittsburgh about a 90 minute drive through some very scenic areas located 3 miles east of Ligonier in the Laurel Highlands on US Route 30 to Laughlintown you will find 'The Original Pie Shop' opened in 1947.

I'm glad you dug this up, Dusty. Thank you.
Back on chapter 1 of 3?  Moody's diner in Waldoboro, ME was mentioned. That place is likely 70+ years old and always excellent; be it pies, breakfast lunch or dinner. I've been going there (I live 350 miles away), for 50 yrs. or more. Off the beaten path, but still in downtown Waldoboro there's a very cool, aged pub - also with good food. AND a favorite 32 mi (one way), blast to the coast. Or 64 miles. Just keep doing the math. It's not crowded in mid summer!

The Pie Bar (fruit & savory), Florence, MA is excellent. Western MA has a lot of good, fun, less crowded roads and places to visit, in that area. R3~

I'll have to agree with an earlier poster - any pie shop in Julian, although my favorite is Mom's Pie House, 4510 CA-78, Julian, CA 92036.

For more selection, and excellent pies (although if you like Julian pies, don't try their apple pies), DuPar's Restaurants.  There are only three locations, one in Pasadena, one at the Original Farmers Market (3rd and Fairfax), and one in Las Vegas.

Not a big pie eater, but the best pie around Fairbanks is reputed to be at the Hill Top Truck Stop on the Elliott Hwy, about twenty miles north of town. They even have a bumper sticker:  I Brake for Pie!
Tack's Store and Cafe used to have great pie, but it burned down a while back. They even had rhubarb pie!

Good serviceable pie south of Seneca Rocks West Virginia. at the Gateway Diner.

The other food is hit or miss. Stick with the burgers.  :)  Great riding area, though.

Koffee Kup, Hico, TX~ can vouch for the apple and pecan!!!

I'll have to try it when I ride on my next trip to Austin.  Unfortunately, no MotoGP this year.

Mom's Pies/Julian and Wynona and Julian Pie Co. Santa Isabel and Julian, Ca. Best in the fall when they harvest the local apples. Unfortunately, I can no longer eat because of diabetes...

I'm a cake guy BUT having tried various pies thru the years in quite a few states mentioned here, the off the chart pie that I've EVER eaten is the peanut butter pie fm Sam's St John's Seafood in Ocala/The Villages, Fl.
One rider's opinion of course.

I'm old enough to remember when the Pie Menu selection at the Marie Calendar restaurant chain in California ran about 5 pages!  Their Peanut Butter pie was the best.  And their Blueberry à la Mode ...wow! Of course, back then I was young enough to eat all I wanted without putting on a pound.  I miss that most of all.

In honor of the resurrection of this thread I started a few years ago, this year's Cedar Vale Sticker may or may not have the following logo, which as many of you attendees know, we always get most delicious pie prepared by the ladies of Cedar Value at our "Night at the Museum" in town:

Only cafe in Dover, KS on HWY4 SW of Topeka.
Only cafe in Durham, KS on K-15 about 25 miles S of Abilene.
Carriage House in Yoder, KS on K96 S of Hutchinson about 12 miles.
All serve excellent pies and usually have a variety.

John, I cut and pasted your KS pie choices to the president of the Four Stroke Single Nat'l Owners Club in Hutchinson. His comments are up this morning on the FSSNOC website. If you can't access them, let me know and I'll cut and paste some more...

Thanks for the posting mhershon. Sadly the Main Street Cafe in Durham closed for good last summer after severe flooding. Here is a pic of the last pie I had there.
