Post by: Gian4 on July 28, 2017, 11:33:56 PM
Hi all
I have a small crack in my fairing and I was wondering what type of plastic it is made from so I know how best to fix it.
Thanks

Had a pro fix the abs covers on my V11 Sport.  He uses 3M 04247 two part filler epoxy + adhesion promoter.  It's the kind of stuff bodies guys fix plastic bumper covers or plastic body panels (like a corvette).

You can shape and sand it or use it to reinforce from backside.

I posted photos in another thread.

Yes the fairing on your Lario should be ABS, my Lemans IV s is. You can repair the crack using abs glue you buy where plumbing supplies are sold, its usually black, like the inner part of the fairing. Does it need repainting, or are you trying to repair the crack, and save the original paint? A good quality 2 part epoxy can also be used to repair it, and mesh such as screen or fiberglass cloth can be used to reinforce from the inside. It can also be plastic welded if its going to be repainted.
can you post a picture of the crack?
Rick.

Drill a small hole at the end of the crack to stop the growth of it. Then go to the parts store and get the JB WELD FOR PLASTIC. This will fix her for sure.. you're welcome:)

I think with the type of crack it has the best repair will be the ABS cement.

Another source for needed repair stuff is a hobby shop. Fiberglass cloth and two part epoxy, along with mixing cups and popsicle sticks are all there.

One thing to consider is why is it cracking. If you merely flood some adhesive into the crack, it will continue to flex and crack again. It's pretty typical that the crack is as an abrupt transition from where the piece is restrained (fastened) to where it can flex. Once again, if you just slather it with glue- the part will continue to flex. So, the use of reinforcement on the back side of the part is to stiffen the area and move the bending away from the repair. I had fatigue cracks pop up on the fairing of my 1200S. I feathered the back side and reinforced with WEST system epoxy and some small patches of carbon. It is hard to imagine how stiff this stuff is until you work with it.  Very important: fiber orientation is critical to success.

Most stores that will sell fiberglass have thin woven "boat cloth". It won't help much with stiffening unless you use a LOT of it. Unidirectional  fiberglass roving is much better (or carbon).  If I had a better idea of the damage and location, I could send you a swatch of carbon.  Try to post a picture of the damage with a scale (ruler) in the photo.
