I'm looking to buy a quantity of sealing washers for various banjo-type fittings. I see this kind of washer that Honda outboards have used for years on their outboard engine drain plugs. It has a metal outer ring with a soft "rubber-ish" inner ring. I suspect the soft material isn't actual rubber. My question is: Has anyone been using this type of washer to seal oil and brake banjos, and what has been your experience?
-
Dave, I've been using those for a long time on my oil sump drain plugs, no leaks for years. Still using regular crush washers for my brake lines.
-
I think I first saw that kind of washer in the Earl's catalog years ago. They work well and, unlike crush washers, they can be reused. My 2003 V11 Sport has them on the oil lines. The 1997 Centauro has the simple crush washers. We used the Earl's washers on the race cars all the time.

I don't like oil leaks, I use them all the time on my bikes. Commonly referred to as a stat-o-seal. Avail. From McMaster carr.

I got a pair of these with my made-in-china brake line pressure switch. I put them on and crossed my fingers. One year in and no leaks.
YMMV DW

I think you're referring to the type of washer (steel/rubber) that has been standard OEM-issue since, I understand, 2001 or so for Guzzi drain plugs:

If so, yes, they work well.

https://www.mcmaster.com/#93786A175 . Same catalog page has the other sizes.

Charlie, the washers I've been looking at are flat with a rubber insert as opposed to these "folded" ones in the MC catalog. Do these folded ones crush to seal, or do you use less torque on the fitting and let the rubber, alone create the seal?
My primary use is the Convert loop fittings, 12mm and 14mm ID/32-ish# pressure relief/200f.

I'm not sure what you mean by "folded", but the ones I linked to do not crush to seal. Less torque on the fitting, rubber does the sealing.

Less torque would be good. I'm reefing on some of these fittings at fartnivorous torque.

I see these recommended for drain plugs, but sealing pressure fittings is not mentioned in any descriptions. Are you using them for oil banjos?
-
David, over here they are known as Dowty seals or Dowty washers. Most hydraulic hose and pneumatic hose supply places will stock them.

I checked my tool catalog, and I can't find a torque wrench calibrated in that scale...
-
The accent is on the 2nd syllable. As in: "The differential pinion bearing should always be torqued to the fartniverous before checking preload*."
It's that new-money scale:
nicensnug
gootntite
fartniverous
herniacious

Noteworthy, ha!

Thanks for explaining that - Google was giving me nothing for fartniverous.
-
Toyota uses them for oil pan drain plug. The local dealer gives them to me when I buy oil filters for my daughters car.

Google has a hard time keeping up with me.

I don't think I've ever seen Dowty seals used on brake systems
I'd suggest that you check that the rubber used is compatible with brake fluid to be on the safe side
-
I have seen them used in brake systems but myself prefer to use alluminium washers. Why? Just *Because*.......
-
Message me, I have some freebies for you... In fact a lot of them, various sizes.

David, I found these:

I never think of Amazon for industrial stuff.
