Fotoguzzi, are you a vet?  I'm, a Vietnam vet.  On the day I left the fantail of my Destroyer I was hoisted by cable in rough seas by a Navy helicopter that was doing the mail run for our flotilla of ships off of Vietnam in '68.  We got back to the aircraft carrier in time for lunch.  After lunch I was facing backwards in the fuselage of a twin engine ASW(anti-submarine warfare) plane launching off the carrier to fly to Cubic Bay airport in the Philippines.  After that on the same day I rode in a C-47 low over the jungle to Clark Air Force Base and waited for 3 or 4 days for a flight to get back to the States @ Travis AFB and then take a bus to Treasure Island Navy base before being separated for 2 + years of my time on active duty in the US Navy Reserves.  This all happened at the end of the Flower child summer of love in San Francisco I knew nothing about until I got back to the USA.   When you're on a US Navy war ship all you know about the rest of the world is what they tell you.  You have no other communication.  Not that it would have mattered in my situation.
