So I got a call from the U-Haul near where I lost my tablet and wallet. It's got a pot shop in the same building, but I was there for a trailer, not herb. The Sheriff's office had posted the loss on facebook, and the finder learned about it there. A pot shop customer had found the tablet and dropped it off. I'm afraid they found it with the tires of their car. So my question is -- will this buff out?

Also -- anyone got any clues on how to maybe get some stuff off of it? I don't keep much there, but I have contact lists and a few pics I don't want to lose.

I'm sure John McAffee could do it but your probably better off with Divine Intervention. Does it fire up at all? possibly connect with bluetooth? Dunno

It's bent, but it makes boot-up noises. I don't see any display.

To start with , not an expert. But....
If you buy a same type phone, you should be able to move the chips from your old one to the new one and all is well, hopefully at least. You may need to do the new phone setup, but at least one of my phones in the same shape I was able to swap the chips and the data still worked after carefully following the setup.
If it will start and you can connect a PC to it, you should be able to see and save the info on it to the PC and then copy that to a new phone. I think??????
The preferred would be that all your info on the phone was backed up to the frickin' "cloud" or the like and can be downloaded to your new phone. I have a microsloth phone and my data should be saved.
Good luck and I hope an expert stops by to give you a better answer.

Losing a wallet sucks, I am thinking of getting something other than black or brown that melts into the scenery.

There was a firearms safety instructor at the range I belonged to that used to say "All the hunter orange in the world can't cover up stupid." What I mean is, when I leave the stuff on the trailer fender and drive away, bright colors don't help. :embarassed:
I forgot that these things could maybe connect to a computer. I'll go find out.

Good point, but the whole idea of hunter orange is to get a glimpse and don`t shoot, Getting a glimpse of a bright color on a trailer fender might have resulted in not losing it.

Magic Dust ?
A phone of mine went for a ride a few years back , W/O permission . We were working in a small town , and one of the crew took my P.U. to a local hardware store for supplies , and the phone had been placed on the bumper after someone had used it . About 30 minutes later , one of my crew received a call from my phone , it had been found by a local , and she just started calling contact numbers . The name Brandon was near the top , and he was working with me that day . It was strange , Brandon was standing about 5 feet away , and could not understand why I was calling him, and since I was unaware the phone was missing , neither could I

I do know that ever since I changed to a white phone from a black one, it get`s misplaced way less often. I bought white just for that reason.
-
Glad you found your billfold. Do you know that his "billfold" could be a ratty plastic bag that he left at the local hardware store. He got it back with nothing missing. I'll buy you a pair of bib overalls with the big pockets.
Wilson left you a monster hairball. I throwed it away. YUCK.
Tried calling you and your phone said it was not accepting calls. Even when I called my loan shark, his phone said not accepting calls. I'm the Rodney Daingerfield of Guzzi riders!

Check and see if the tablet has an SD or micro SD card installed. You might get lucky and find your files on there.
-
I'd connect it to another device and see if I could transfer files off of it. You know that solid state memory chips can take a beating, but, the circuit board may not. Just losing one trace could render it useless.
If it does 'work' then you could do a screen replacement. I did one on an old Samsung phone and it went well. Got one of the cheap kits online. but, not sure if something else might be wrong.
For example, is the battery intact? Not 'bent' or dimpled anywhere? Then it might be OK. If it looks damaged AT ALL, then get rid of it. No need to carry around an incendiary device :)
If both the screen and battery need to be replaced you are at the cost level of a new tablet.

Glad your stuff found its way home!
Although many do not like the idea of cloud backup, this is exactly what it's for.
Having an android or apple device backed up to the cloud or even an automatic backup to your computer will take most of the lost device anxiety away. Google and apple both provide location service as well as lockout and wipe features that keep your info safe if lost.
My phone is just a tool to hold info. I keep it locked and if it disappears I've only lost the hardware.
Just .02 for your consideration going forward.

I've had photobucket, bank with BOA, and have an Experian account. What do I need with a cloud? I've got plenty of broken promises and limp security now.
Gonna try cabling up to the desktop today and see what happens. Maybe after tinkering with the trike some and listening to the Seahawks pack the cheese.

Im astounded that nobody has suggested duct tape. you could do a real nice repair.........

I'm pretty sure that should buff out.

I never understood the obsession with super glue, epoxy is better in almost every application
only place I use superglue is in my knife roll for the inevitable cuts & slashes of the kitchen
good luck RK... any chance you purchased it with a credit card with some sort of supplimental/extended replacement protection or some such?

I'm no help, but since the last time I left a wallet on the roof of my car and drove away (never did get even a note regarding that one) my policy is that if I put ANYTHING on top of the car, my keys have to go up there with it as well.

JB Weld and maybe a bit of duct tape and you'll be good to go. :Beating_A_Dead_Hors e_by_liviu

It had a year of coverage and I bought it two June's ago. So they've declined support.
I also use superglue to put myself back together after getting too close to sharp objects. I cut my wrist when a sheet of metal roofing slipped in my hands. It was a couple inches long and deep enough that I could see the arm stuff inside. I pulled it all together with tape and laid a bead of superglue over it. It healed nicely.

One of the symptoms of my fibromyalgia is a bad case of CRS. I literally lose recent memories and the flow of short-term sequences. The doctor reminded me that he'd warned me about that, but of course I'd forgotten. I've taken to making lists and trying to always set things in the exact same place every time. It works when I remember to do it, remember what I was doing, and then remember that I remembered. I go to the store sometimes and sit in the parking lot trying to remember why I am there. :embarassed:
-
I understand. My brother says he makes lists before he leaves the house, then drives off without the list, drives around for a while, and goes home because he doesn't remember what was on the list.

Not making light of your symptoms and not easy to make fun of things causing pain. But it`s a funny comment and glad you can find some humor in it!

^^^^ Sounds funny, but it's not. I've had my memory lapses from anesthetic. So has my sweetie.
On superglue.. when Tom cut out my gizzard, etc. he glued me back together. Not a stitch mark in seven incisions.
I recommend it.

RK does have a way with words. One of the many reasons he is so loved around here :) Even those of us who have never met him.

Still not going to date you, Charlie. :boozing:
Took my first sortie into the world of new phones. My BLU was a "7-inch Phablet", which is hipster for "big-assed smartphone". I discovered that went I went into a BEST BUY to look over their wares. The guy at the door declared it to be a tablet from the bits he saw, and headed me down to the tablet section. There the hipster said "it's a phablet". I said I'd guessed that when it sent and received phone calls. He hand-delivered me to a hipster in the phone "department"* That hipster declared the BLU to be "Either a tiny tablet or a big-assed cell phone. Hey Zander -- what's the biggest-assed cell phone in the store?" They argued about it while I moved on to the Verizon store. I doubt that they've yet noticed I'm gone.
Verizon had phones. Lots of them, organized by budget, size, and apparently gender, since all the teeny girls were concentrated in one display area. I was reassured to see that the Apple stuff is still segregated -- made them easier to ignore. The tattooed girl proudly spieled that I could get an Apple without the latest Chinese spyworms, or a Samsung guaranteed to not incinerate a pressurized aircraft, and the very latest subscription to all my favorite apps. I could get them with 16-32-64Gb of memory and plans from two years to life. I could not however simply purchase a phablet. Had to have a plan or pay above retail for the device. And besides, these units were dedicated to Verizon -- what was I going to do with a big-assed cell phone and no plan?
Next stop was a "cell phones R us" type store. All the phones were in cardboard or blister wrap. Nothing was over $60. Most were prepaid, but some had no loyalty to any provider. You needed to already know which "burn phone" you wanted, on account of no staff member was going to allow them to be handled until after purchase, and once the package was opened, there were no returns.
I proceeded to the Mukilteo industrial park, just off the end of the Paine Field runway. I was treated to a C47/DC3 on final approach low enough to stick a nickle into his tire tread as he went by. It sounded like a Kitchenaid mixing pecans and gizzards at speed 4. I hope it made those last few hundered feet successfully . . .
I stopped at an independent "Jaguar, MB, Fiat (huh?)" shop and asked the counter girl with the uncomfortably low neckline where the little weld shop was in the park -- you know -- that one that does little jobs and custom work. Now I'd never heard of the place, but it seems like all these industrial parks have a burned-out certified welder doing little jobs and custom work, just like country music always has a slide guitar. I "weld", but in some states weld-level mods need to be certified, and I'm not that quality. She thought the shop was in the next building cluster over, and sure enough it was. It was closed though, mid-afternoon Monday. Not a good sign if you're looking for a welder who can get your little custom job done on time. Back in Sitka the rarest quality in a certified welder is sobriety. I moved on.
Two phone stores and a NAPA/U-Haul hitch installation and repair shop later I was done with the phablet search and had printed directions to another welding shop in another industrial area that also did small jobs and custom work. Carl, the shop manager listed to me and recommended a small shop in the area who could do it sooner and probably more economically. He printed me the directions and I followed them through two school zones and a mobile home park that reeked of drying marihuana. I found the shop across the lane from a metal arts shop. He is a certified welder, even, and he was in the office. His name is Cook, and he rides Aprilia. Everything I could see of him from the chin down was tattooed. I pulled out the leading link front end I'd brought along and described how I wanted it altered to fit the trike. He described what he'd do about it, and thought he could get to it next week, and have it done by that Friday. I left him the UNIT unit and went home.
I'll go north for my next phablet sortie.
* they don't have departments there. The phones are tastefully arranged among other things, like remotes and routers so's to discourage the unhipsterlike practice of side-by-side comparisons.

Thank you for the well told tale. That's what I fear I'll experience when I make the transition from a burner phone and desktop workstations at both home and the day job, to a clever phone, if not a smart one. To quote William Gibson, " you can't let the little pricks generation gap you ".
Glad you found a welder, I inspected a mile or so of welds back in the eighties - it was an interesting crowd. Some guys were highly skilled technical craftsmen, some could melt metal if the wind was right.
EDIT: My burner of choice is the basic Tracfone - nothing but calls and text, no program, I buy minutes online as I need 'em. Yes, I'd love a smart phone, but I'd have to pay for it (snapping suspenders).

Wow. My Tablet is a old Galaxy Note 4. Same model as my phone. The phone is terrific and worth trying to save should something happen to it. But the tablet was just a $120 sale special at a big box store from three years ago. Not sure I would work too hard to save it.

I'm committed to having one electronic device for my travels. That means the phone and the GPS need to be the same unit. Less than a 7" screen (measured diagonally, you know  ) is difficult to see and touch with precision, and greater than that is difficult to mount on the handlebar. Unfortunately, the 7" format is not very popular because it looks silly holding a paperback-sized phone up to one's ear. So I use an earwig for voice stuff. I should probably mention that I was convinced CP/M was going to bury DOS, and I bought a BETA instead of VHS. So I'm probably wrong about this, too. :undecided:
-
I've got a replacement coming. When I bought the BLU 7" phone that size was gaining popularity. In the two years since it has lost market and very few current phones are that big. After a lot of research I settled on the Lenovo Phab 2. The 6.4" screen is slightly smaller, but it comes with 32Gb of native storage, a faster processor, and Android 6.0 (old unit had 4.4). Cost is a little less than the BLU was. It lacks an internal compass. Otherwise it's at or above the levels of everything in the BLU.
The two primary uses of the device are telephony and GPS nav. This gives me screen enough for the NAV part and still lets me use a single device for both purposes. The secondary use is internet. This phone can use both wireless and phone to access the net. Finally, it does all the android apps, so if I want other things (I don't, really), it will drive them.
Now I'm looking for an upgraded earwig to my Plantronics Voyager 500. It does everything well except battery life. Sticking that thing in my ear and discovering that over a week of disuse it's leaked to 2 hours talk time from the 7 hours I charged it to is a bummer. I don't like keeping things tethered to charge the battery, be it a motorcycle or an electronic widget. Drives me nuts.
I don't know what I can salvage from the wrecked phone. I might need folks who think I should have their contact information to resend it to me. I'll know when I can examine the data on my memory chip.
-
If you can't get the contact info off the old one, a phone store should be able to do it.
Good luck!
Tom
