The beautiful 2001 Red Jackal in the classified a few weeks ago from Joe A.
Geez. What a great buy that was. The bike is in REALLY good shape and runs well.
As it's 16 years old, though, I've started going thru it. After doing the easy stuff I'm off to Hamlin Cycles in CT next Monday to work on the bike along with Jim. Having replaced several stators in Tiger1050's I placed my meter on the bike and found it's putting out 14.9 at anything above idle. I have had parts delivered to his shop and we will swap the alternator along with a new stator and rotor. If Im replacing one part on an older bike may as well do it all, along with a new battery.
New rubber manifolds (both) needed on both sides of the motor as well as new rubber on the wheels-new tubes included. We'll also replace both wheel bearings while the wheels are off. Fluid flush (all) and replacement of all fuel hoses, too.
Jim has a ignition mod to bypass some current passing thru all the wiring that he suggested, so that's in the cards.
Refresh the front end and install new rear shocks and the bike is ready for the next 47000 miles.
All in all, it's what I expected to renew an older machine. Looking forward to putting many more miles on this lovely machine. I've put about 700 or so in the short time I've owned it and it's been a wonderful thing.

Wheel bearings are a good idea they are only 2RS and cheap

Wheel bearings ? Josie, the Bassa Rat, is in that age range, and coming up on needing tires. Sorry, drinking, :boozing: hope I'm spelling okay.

Replacing wheel bearings........... in 55 years of riding my bikes I have yet had to do that. Even tho 1 of them has over 100K miles (the other 85K) on it. Do I live in alternative world or do some of you guys? My motto is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I guess it depends on how much they are exposed to water and grit.
I have seldom replaced wheel bearings on my mostly British street bikes over the last 40 years.
My race bikes have only had theirs replaced once each.
But as it was pointed out, they're cheap, so if it makes you feel better, do it. :thumb:

On my Loops, I have had to re-shim the wheel bearings to make them properly adjusted. My EV had a bad rear wheel bearing when I bought it with about 13K miles.

When I bought my California II it had 4 different brands of wheel bearings.
I change them with new tires, they are so cheap why not.
I had my EV spit the balls out of a front bearing and had to ride it back on one bearing, surprisingly no drama but spoilt the trip.
On the other hand i'm sure the ones on my loop are original at 130,000 miles but it has proper seals and tapered rollers like a car.

Congratulations on the new machine. I agree with most of your preventative maintenance.
I'd just give the alternator a second thought. According to the parts book it's the same Saprista unit that's on my '98 V11. That unit has a permanent magnet rotor and a field winding with no moving parts (no brushes). As long as the field isn't shorted or open it should work fine. The output on that alternator is not regulated. The faster it goes the more power it produces (brushed alternators lower rotor current to lower output). The regulator in that bike literally short circuits extra output current to earth and turns it to heat. That's why the finned case. In the case of excess output I'd be suspect of a faulty regulator or a poor path to ground.

I second that. I recall reading here where someone was chasing an overcharging gremlin. IIRC, it turned out the same circuit that reads voltage is also the headlight circuit. I **think** he simply ran a new power wire to the headlight and used the old feed to trigger a relay. Once that was done, the voltage regulator was seeing the right voltage and sent less back to the battery.

I considered that and you may very well be correct.
I'm going to change it anyway for my own satisfaction. A few times a year I get to assist in Jim's great shop and take advantage to "over maintain" my bikes. It's much more convenient to have a fully stocked place to work as opposed to my home shop which is set up for basic maintenance and light repair. I feel fortunate to have access as well as a wealth of knowledge at my fingertips if and when I need it, which is often!

On the alternator, that should be the Ducati alternator with the regulator mounted below the steering neck.
Congrats on a great bike. I considered it myself, but really don't need another at this time.

I met Mat(?) from Hamlin this weekend in Maine. Glad you like the bike, and Wegman and I still want to get a ride in with you this year as schedules allow.

I replaced the rubber with Metzler 888 on front and 880 rear (as the 888 rear not available until Oct 2017). What a lovely thing this did for the bike. As we know, new rubber is always nice but on the way back to Buffalo I enjoyed 400 plus miles of Guzzi goodness, and in the twisties the bike was wonderful with these tires.

I can see why.
I had them on my Rocket III and smoked the rear every 3000 miles. Expensive for a 240 size tire to say the least!
I don't expect the Jackal to do the same.

I've a long history of changing Harleys over to Metzeler Marathons too and have had decent success enjoying better handling/stick while still maintaining decent rear tire life spans (8-12k depending on the bike).
