Man, that is a long way from anything. About 5 hours away from me. Couldn't make it there and back for work tomorrow.

I assume traveling. What direction were they heading?

East . Not sure if he has internet access yet , but he is in a motel . Rear tire has failed , we may have to send him some tire spoons .

I really need someone with a trailer/toy hauler who would pick me and bike up and haul us to Tulsa for cash...much better than trying to ship tire here to Boise City and trying to find someone to mount it...no cycle shops here...I could try making it to Guymon if that would help...

Sorry your having trouble dude. You might consider ordering a tire and some spoons 🥄 replacing a tire is a bitch but it ain't rocket surgery.

I think hauling it to tulsa would be much better all around time wise and money wise...if someone was willing, they could pick up my Jeep in Tulsa and rent a uhaul m/c trailer to haul me home and I would reward them handsomely with cash...

I'd head west in the yota but there's this job thing in the morning. Hope it works out for you Chris. I hope you have booze :boozing:

Thanks for the good wishes...

Chris...if available, rent a Uhaul truck and roll the bike up into it...hopefully there's a town nearby that has a Uhaul or Budget truck rental.

Sorry to hear you're having bike troubles!

I have no idea if they're in a position to help, but Google turns up this business in Guymon:

Motorcycle Flea Market
108 South Lelia St
Guymon, OK 73942
Phone: (580) 468-3387

Closest towns with real motorcycle stores are going to be Dalhart, TX or Liberal, KS.

Good luck!

At the end of the IronButt Rally in 2003, I had one that looked almost that bad. Naturally, there wasn't a tire to be had in Missoula (the competitors had bought them all!). I had to baby it as far as Calgary, where I could finally get a new tire on the beast!

Tire is weird wear, only in the spot dead center.  Almost like a rubbing issue. Good you have it sorted.

Nah, just too many miles riding The Great Plains.

I used to get cords down the middle pretty regular, when I was riding a lot of miles.

Well, the saga continues...UHaul dealer in Boise City closed for today...AAA doesn't have a motorcycle-capable wrecker available today for hauling bike to Guymon where the UHaul dealer is open but closes at 2:00...Do I take a chance riding to Guymon on bad tire or stay another night in  Boise City? Being possibly stranded out in the hot OK sun doesn't sound like fun to me...at least I'm  close to beer and a bed where I am...
Title: Re: Anyone near Guymon OK ?
Post by: rocker59 on September 11, 2017, 10:13:52 AM

No way to tell from your photo how much into the cord it's worn.  There are several layers.

A friend had the same problem about ten years ago, in about the same place, and rode several hundred miles from Liberal to Tulsa on a Sunday when everything out there was closed.  Slowly, and alternating keeping the bike leaned left and right off-center.

I'm not telling you that you should do that, but it's only 62 miles from Boise City to Guymon.  45 mph would mean you're 1.5 hours from the "big city" of Guymon.  Or, you could enjoy beautiful Boise City for another day, until the U-Haul opens up there.

UHaul here in Boise City only has trailers...
Only motorcycle-capable wrecker doesn't yet know if he will be available for AAA duty tomorrow...No motorcycle-capable wreckers available in Guymon to come and get me...

Here's a pic of the worst spot:

Chris...looks like you've got about 75-100 miles left on the tire...had a similar situation a few years ago coming back from the 3 Twisted Sisters...noticed this while in Lockhart, and made it home safely (slowly and twisty) to Houston....but I did about 45 mph most of the way back to keep the heat down on the tire.  You could try under inflating it a bit so it wears more on the beefy sides rather than in the center...
Title: Re: Anyone near Guymon OK ?
Post by: twowings on September 11, 2017, 11:05:15 AM
That could be, but IF I breakdown enroute, the AAA wrecker situation still exists, and that leaves me stranded by roadside all night with a now non-rolling bike to try and load into a truck or trailer...in the hot sun with no food OR beer...if the wrecker is not available again tomorrow, then I'll consider riding it to Guymon...
Title: Re: Anyone near Guymon OK ?

Well...you're right about that...I hadn't considered how serious the beer situation could be...best to stay put and near A/C and cold refreshments then!

How about a nearby Home Depot or ACE hardware?  Get several rolls of heavy duty Gorilla tape and start laying several strips longitudinally until you've got a couple of mm's of thickness, then tape them thru the rim...that should buy you a few more miles.  Watch out for traction...

:)

My kid failed to check tire pressures on a trip and did several long days extremely underinflated and overloaded.  Just past Gillette, Wyoming, his cord started showing.  It was Sat. PM.  We slowed it down to 45 ands got to Souix Falls, SD, checking all the little towns along the way.  We finally found a Honda shop (iirc) and spent Sunday night in their haul trailer.  The next morning when the shop opened they sadly informed us that they didn't have a tire either.  But they called around and found one.  The store that had it didn't do mounting, so the Honda shop sent a truck over and bought the tire while we pulled the rear wheel from his /7.  They changed it on the spot.  The total bill was $10 over the sticker price on the tire.

So good things happen if you strike the right cord.

Yeah...true that...cause then one of us would have to come up with the trailer and get him or feel guilty forever for letting a fellow Guzzisti twiddle his thumbs in Guymon!  Of course, he is a lot closer to Texas than he is to home!  Planning another stop in Slapout as well this time?  :)

If you don't like the suggestion of the Gorilla tape, you could find a tire shop and have them re-tar the tire with enough of that rubber coating that guy advertises on TV that provides a water sealable coating...that should be enough to get you farther down the road for sure!

Or a nearby tire shop that might have a slightly less used tire available for $10 bucks you could have...maybe even a small car tire?

If there's a Home Depot nearby,

I just ran a search on Google Maps.  Nearest Home Depot to Boise City Oklahoma is Amarillo Texas.

Not many chain stores out that way...

It seldom is ever as bad as you think it's going to be.

Is it a tubeless or tubed tire?

I've been thru the Panhandle once directly but never specifically in Guymon...last trip was a straight shot up from Amarillo up thru Dumas thru Boise City and then up to Colorado, but I can't say I've ever been to the thriving Metropolis of Guymon.  Perhaps I should have asked if there was a Walmart rather than a Home Depot...but you know what I meant!  Find a tire shop or a gas station, that's the point of the suggestions.  And I think the population of Guymon is about 10K people...large enough to have some decent size shops.

Just trying to be creative here...worst comes to worst...leave the bike...rent a car or take a bus and go home and come back and get it with the jeep/trailer.

So you're saying the title of the post should be:  Anyone near Boise City, OK?  Then...well, why didn't you say so in the first place!  :)

Surely you can get a ride into Guymon and buy some materials and get a ride back...or call the WMT Super center and see if they have a tire in your size or close that could work...

Yeah...that's why I suggested a car tire in the earlier post, but I'm thinking there might be a motorcycle shop in Gruymon too, or at the very least he can get the Flexseal and move along down the road a bit.  Time doesn't seem to be the precious commodity here, so even a slow but steady return should work.

Ok...I think we've provided enough reasonable suggestions...

For those of you that have never visited the Panhandle of Oklahoma some explanation of what happened might be in order . The laws of physics don't apply , it is only 166 miles end to end , and yet traveling at a steady 60 MPH it takes 3 days of steady driving to traverse the distance . Scientists have studied this seemingly impossible fact for years , and in the 1960's a scientist from Stanford casually mentioned to a fellow researcher from MIT that " It is almost impossible to get from Slapout to Kenton " , which became the origin of the phrase "You can't get there from here" . It is possible that Two Wings has actually been traveling for a couple of days and he simply hasn't made it to Slapout yet .

That could be disasteristically terrible even in civilization. Couple it with the Oklahoma panhandle and they aren't even allowed to make horror movies of such tales!
