This is a great post mate.
I get sick to death of posts about adding 1/16th of an inch to a perfectly capable fairing screen to reduce "excessive buffet" on a bike that's sold after 4 years with 3,000 miles on the clock. How do they know ? They never ride the bastard !!!
Those shots contain an excitement and a romance that only a lonely hiway (as you eloquently describe) can provide...Love that #7
Good one.

I feel so blessed to live in an area where I can ride many roads with little traffic. This picture was taken last week SW of Manhattan, KS. I was stopped by the flagger for about 20 minutes. In that time the only traffic were the trucks connected to the road resurfacing. I when I could proceed I was the only vehicle there to follow the pilot vehicle. :thumb:

Cassiar Highway, BC.
The HD dealer in Fairbanks had lived/worked in Sierra Vista, AZ and...living in Tucson at the time, we spent a good part of the day trading Sonoran desert tales. He poo-poo'd simply heading back to AZ on the Alcan and said the Cassiar would be more extreme. The road was fun, but on an '88 Softail with a 4 gallon tank, I remember sweating bullets looking for fuel. Got lucky and spied a "Shell" sign peeking over a berm somewhere along this route....

Hwy 50 in Nevada. If I'm correct I have the award the state gives you.

Glider wins! Nevada indeed! And a very secure place to let the horses run free!
Highway 50 - wonderful scenery (winter or summer (although the temps can be daunting in the summer)...

Tex...you're correct...must have posted while I was posting! Do I want to know what the state award is? Sounds dangerous and unpleasant...hence the presence of an anti-present system installed always!! :)

The UK is a bit small to find any truly lonely roads, but there are some up on the moors of Weardale/Teesdale/Alston that perhaps qualify. Riding vintage machinery alone along these roads has you thinking of how you'd manage, if the need ever arose, to fit a new set of points in the dark!

The picture I posted on page one was Nevada, too. A little south of 50.. 6, and every bit as lonely.
I agree. US 50 advertises itself as the Loneliest Highway, but Hwy 6 from Ely to Tonopah is lonelier than The Loneliest Highway; 167 miles of no signs of civilization, other than the highway itself.
-
167 miles of no signs of civilization, other than the highway itself.
One might argue that that goes for all roads in North America

This was taken today coming back across the Hay plains, possibly the most boring road in Oz. In parts of it you can actually see the curvature of the earth from ground level!
Having said that Jude and I stayed in Hay last night at a lovely motel and there is a pleasant, almost Zen like pleasure in travelling in 'Companionable Silence!' through as low moving landscape that has been comparatively unchanged in eons. There again after thirty five years of marriage perhaps we just hate talking to each other so any reason to shut up is a good one! :D
The purpose of this little jaunt was far more serious though! We have arrived back in Bungendore with a vast quantity of great McClarren Vale red wine and a years supply of horseradish! Who lives better than us! One of the Reds is going to be a 'Knock yer Block Off' in a couple of years time I reckon and at $130 a case...........

Can't find photos of my Triumph Bonneville on the Extraterrestial Highway (NV 375).
It goes ~ 98 miles from Crystal Springs (no fuel) to Warm Springs (ghost town).
Fueling in Ash Springs is ~160 miles to Tonopah for next fuel stop.
Photos below are not exactly highway, but on this trip I never saw another vehicle.

The Nordkapp Highway probably doesn't count...
(It only goes in one direction)

This was in 2013 on an 8 day ride in Japan. Convinced me that as nice as BMW are, they are like riding sewing machines

Like the sign says. . . . . it's on the border. Sheesh. Try to keep up, will ya? :whip2:
It's up in White Pass, above Skagway, AK. They need the sign. There's an ~300yd swath cut through the trees at the actual survey line, but aside from that formidable barricade there on the left side of the road, there is no other indication that you're in any country at all. The Canadian border station is at Bennett Lake (where Jack London camped for a season while building his raft and writing some books), and the US station is nearer to Skagway. The White Pass Railroad connects the two locations.

That's a clear winner in the "lonely" stakes.
Makes Nordkapp look like Las Vegas !
