Tex went out for a morning ride to the coal mines yesterday morning, Sunday. Just a few miles from his house, a truck "didn't see him" and pulled out in front of him. Ken doesn't remember anything after that, so I don't know any of the details.
He broke both arms, ribs, clavicle, spinous processes on T5 thru T9 vertebra (mid-back) and some toes. He also had a large deep gash all the way down to the knee joint. He had surgery yesterday afternoon to clean out and stitch his knee and to fix one of his broken arms. He will have more surgery today or tomorrow to fix the other broken arm and possibly the clavicle. No head injuries, his helmet did it's job well!
They've got him in SICU for right now.
I haven't seen his bike yet, kinda scared to, but am going to try to get it transferred to a friend's body shop today so we won't be paying storage fees to the place that has it.
He has no computer access, and can't talk on the phone right now, but our phone numbers are 903-316-7720 and 903-780-4012. Both of us have flip phones so we don't do internet on them. You can text either phone, but it's too hard to text back. No pictures or videos because the screen is too small to see them.
He would love to get some cards from anyone who would like to send one.

Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers and send positive vibes his way!
The show this weekend must go on, so if you were planning on coming to the GRIT Rally, come on, don't cancel!
Who knows, if he's out of the hospital, he may be able to come to the rally for a little, and if not, then he can probably have visitors at his home! If he's still in the hospital, he'll be in a regular room by then and will be able to receive visitors.
Get those cards in the mail and see you this weekend!

Ugh!
The news we hate to hear, yet hear all too often.
I'm glad he's in good hands and on the road to getting better.
Give Tex my best.

Holy Sh*t, When Tex does something he's in for the full ride!!!
What's the other guy look like?
Very bad but survived it!!
Will send a card when I get to the States this week. Broken ribs...oooh the memories, try to not make him laugh!
Wishing him a complete and quick recovery!!!

Man...bad news. Glad he survived however. Hoping for a full recovery. Tex is going to need to start trailering his rides at least 50 miles from home before riding. Seems close to home is too dangerous.

That's rough news, I sure hope Ken is the fast healing type and not in too much pain. Anything I can do to help, I will. I'll write later.

Holy hard helmets, that was definitely a tumble!
Tell him to listen to the nurses! And mostly listen to the doctors. ;) Hopefully he can get out of there soon; hospital staff are outstanding but there truly is no place like home. Wishing him well and a speedy recovery.

New around here and don't know anyone but please accept my Get Well Soon wishes and concern. I myself am only recently recovered from a bad bike accident this past February. Make sure they do an MRI on the spinous process fractures and not just rely on CT scans. This is because ligaments show on MRI but not on CT and they need to check out the spinal ligaments as well. MRI needs to be done before they put most of the metal plates rods or pins that may be required for the other broken bones. I learned that bit about the MRI needs referencing ligaments, from a retired ER trauma MD whom I know when discussing my own injuries a while back.

That big goober is damn sure nuf a friend of mine!! I'll be sending a card from Germany tomorrow! Damn! Sh*t!!
Hang in there, Ken!!!

Beaver...are you sure you guys want to go thru the effort of putting on a rally here while Tex is laid up. Send him my best wishes for a speedy recovery as well.
If it's too much to deal with considering you probably want to be with him instead of herding a bunch of Guzzisti cats running around!
Either way, I"m sure we'd understand!

Make sure he takes the time to heal properly!

I keep telling Tex that there's easier ways to get a date with a nurse. Geez. When ya gonna listen, Bubba Earl? Besides, I saw her first!
Seriously though, this is terrible news. He hasn't broken that many bones at once since he thought he could fly off the roof. It must have been a stealth truck for it to sneak up on him unawares like that. Ken's a really alert kind of rider. I hope his assailant's insurance includes a lap dance with Wilma and some really good painkillers. That's because after Wilma, he'll need painkillers.
I think I've broken everything Beaver mentioned, but not at the same time. Trust Ken to economize and do them all at once instead of stretching them out over a lifetime. Kind of like his Costco run for injuries and rehab. I guess I'm going to have to stop puttering with the trike and get down there. He'll probably be needing help remembering security codes and when to water the submarine. Tell him I'll get this leading link invented and start out before the end of the week.
How's Wilson holding up?

Hell, I didn't even know that Texas Turnip was Ken Hand in disguise. I met Ken many years ago at a rally somewhere.
Speedy recovery Ken, thinking of you from down under.

Praying for a full and relatively pain free recovery.

Folks, the rally is still a go. I'm sure Turnip does not want his current misfortune to turn people away from coming.
I'm not computer savvy. Is there a way we can electronically "link" Ken into the rally at certain times?
-
Sorry for your misfortune. Best wishes and prayers from Colorado.
-
Oh no! Not the best news to hear at all!
That is a serious tumble indeed! Did he actually hit the truck?
Anyway all the best for a speedy recovery. I wish there was something I could do.

Yes, he did hit the truck, he thinks near the end of the bed. doesn't remember anything after that.

Not a huge fan of all the litigation in this country, but there are times when you need an attorney. This is one of those times.
I'd retain a personal injury attorney to ensure that the at-fault driver's auto insurance covers everything adequately. I wasn't busted up as bad as what it sounds Tex is, and my bills from earlier this year totaled about $ 250,000.
-
Ken's 1 tough dude, so I hope he survives this detour of life. I also hope someone knows who the truck driver is and that he has good insurance to compensate Ken for what he's going thru. The bike's toast.
Judy and I had a truck driver turn left right in front of us in `01 by Lake Tahoe and I had to lay our `80 Convert. w/trailer down to avoid hitting his right front tire/fender. Judy got her left arm scraped and I went unconscious. Luckily it was at slow speed and both truck driver and I had Geico Ins., so there was no hassle on settling with them. But if Judy hadn't been a witness to why what happened, the truck driver may have gotten off as the causer of the incident.

How bout a Turnip update?

How bout a Turnip update?
Sorry I've been silent today. I don't do Internet on my little flip phone. Ken's daughter was here a lot today, so I did some running around for a couple of hours. His other daughter brought us a tablet so I can keep people updated.
Not much to report today. Mostly resting/dozing. PT sat him up on the side of the bed and had him do some leg exercises. Ken had us laughing because of his drugs.
Will have surgery on his left arm tomorrow around noon.
I took pictures of the bike. If it's possible and if I can figure it out, I might be able to upload to this tablet, but don't hold your breath.
He's been giving me instructions about his yummy rally dessert breads.
See everyone soon!

Morphine in IV and Norco(?) pills. He's not wearing his glasses and the lights were dimmed so he could sleep and he just woke up as the guy was leaving. He must have been dreaming about you because he always wakes up still talking from his dream. Apparently he dreams about Chinese food a lot too!

Oh, man, serious flashback. So far, the progress sounds like all good news after a bad event. Almost everything about his accident and his multiple injuries are directly parallel to my brother's crash two years ago. Head on with left turning pickup on old Route-66 in Arizona. Totaled the moto and the Toyota truck but Vin's doing fine in the end. Multiple surgeries and physical therapy. Bits of reconstruction metal and cadaver tendons in him. The drugs were really wonderful at pain control. Lots of funny stories at the hospital that he does not remember. The only bad part was hard emotional times taking more than a year to shake those powerful opioids away. The good news update is that I am in Arkansas today to participate in a multi-day golf tournament with Vin. So, given the crash parallels, the future looks good for Ken as well.

Ummm . . .Beav . . . Although he can present a very convincing case to pay up, Slicer isn't actually licensed to practice law. I checked. According to unnamed sources that I just made up, he doesn't even have a valid driving license, and all he's supposed to be collecting (according to the judge's order) is belly button lint. Have you seen his collection?

Spoke with Beaver , Ken was out of his last surgery , waking up . Apparently Dave Munnerlyn had asked Her to give Ken a kiss from him , so in the spirit of , well something , she asked if I would like her to give him one from me , considering the dream thing and all . Well of course , why not , give him a kiss from me also . Well, Tex didn't actually come to the rally, only his poster size picture came! He can't get out of bed by himself yet, and Monday with help from PT or OT he walked about 25 steps. We all wrote messages on the poster and I carried those Tex Messages to the Rehab Hospital to him.

Tex is coming home this morning, Monday, Oct 16. He's been working really hard with PT & OT and can now walk 250 feet with no assistance! Still no use of either arm - both broken and in casts/brace. He's so excited, but I think he's going to miss all the nurses, techs, PT's & OT's cuz they've all taken such good care of him the last 2 weeks. Thank you to all who have sent cards and gifts. WOW!
It is good to hear about Ken’s recovery. “Keep it on the Up-Up Kenâ€.
I spent the night in Torrey Utah. Nice town, but the word on everyone’s lips was to watch out for truck drivers. I am taking it to heart after reading this post. Get Well.

Well, I'm finally back online here. My cat ate some of my computer wires and I accidentally disabled a tablet someone had loaned me while at the hospital! I just fixed the computer and returned the tablet to the owner so she could try to fix it. Can't do internet stuff on my phone.
Ken came home to my house last Monday. Will be talking to someone from home health tomorrow to hopefully get some PT/OT and maybe nurse and aide also. Right now, his routine is eating his meals, napping, and doing leg exercises while sitting in his wheelchair. He can't really do anything else at this time with all his broken bones. Yes, he needs help with everything and yes, I'm doing everything for him right now. His daughters and several of our friends have brought food and his son-in-law and daughters have been taking care of his yard and house.
Thank you for all the cards and gifts everyone has sent. Ken feels so honored to have a "Guzzi Family" like y'all. I'm sure my mail deliverer was wondering what was going on with all those cards coming in!
Keep those prayers and positive thoughts going up and out!

I have not posted until now, didn't know what/how to say.
I do hope you have the continued strength to take care of him, with the continued help of family I hope!
Get well quick!

I talked with Tex yesterday. He's in home care now, with Beaver busy keeping him comfortable. He's got his therapy cat, Wilson, on-hand and underfoot. That cat owns Tex and forbids him to not spoil him. So in order to open the treats, he's required to make a full recovery. He says he can't wait to get back on a bike. I said I knew he hated the Breva, but did he have to do *THAT* in order to replace it? He said "Well, I couldn't sell it in good conscience on account of it's a turd."
Seriously though, he'd doing his physical therapy diligently, and he's mending fast and well. His days are pretty much PT and napping, so pretty much business as usual, except that he's not rocking the Oleo Ranch -- just reps of the basics like getting in and out of chairs and vehicles, moving joints and muscles, and chasing nurses. He's not doing the computer at all, so he's not able to keep up on WG. Beaver is keeping the phones and screening his calls because with the ribs and all, talking is still an effort. He also can't hold a phone -- has to have someone dial out and then do speaker on the flipphone, when Beaver will let him have it -- so he's not in real good communication.
He did briefly mention that the truck driver that the guy had insurance and had been issued a ticket, not that the ticket helps his recovery, he said. I did not get the sense that there was any intent on the truck driver's part, and I did not get a sense of the type or size of truck. The bike is totaled. His phone died before I could get the sequence of the crash clear in my head, so I won't try to recap it.
Tex wanted me to especially let the WG community know that the steady stream of cards and letters have overwhelmed even Wilson, who suspects Tex of exchanging love letters with another feline. Wilson has been very suspicious of Tex two-timing on him ever since he caught him browsing kitty porn on the web. Tex tried to explain it away as the Craigslist free kitties for sale listings, but Wilson isn't having it. So all these cards and letters are freaking the cat out. He keeps knocking the displays over. There were more than 150 last week, so maybe 200 by now. He says he didn't know he had that many friends that he didn't owe money to. He's feeling the support and he thanks everyone who's responded.
But with the lack of computer and his main source of gossip Dusty, both unavailable, I think he's feeling out of touch and disconnected from the rest of us. I mean -- he's called *me*. What does that tell you? I think we need to get another card and note blitz going. If not for Tex, do it for the kitty.
-
Well , we tried to have a conversation , but Wilson kept interrupting , something about wanting to go out for fish-n-chips , claimed the dry stuff just wasn't getting the job done anymore .
Anyway , Ken wants everyone to know he will be at Cedar Vale in May , he expects all of his old friends and some new ones to come for a visit , he promised to bring armadillo and turnip pie for Sat night dessert :food:
As RK stated , he really appreciates the cards , letters , magazines etc . The live kangaroo someone sent was a bit surprising , although "Hoppy" seems to be adapting well to East TX . One of the neighbors recently moved in from up North thought it was a Jackalope , which led to some confusion, The Beav had to explain that Hoppy was NOT to end up on their Thanksgiving menu
So all is well in Lindale , or as Ken calls it , Kendale , keep those cards and letters coming , and any Thanksgiving leftovers that will ship W/O refrigeration so the new neighbors won't keep eyeing Hoppy would be appreciated also , mostly by the Roo

Beaver and Ken glad things are better.
Ken believe it or not sometimes I pray for the special people in my life when things happen.
You two got a prayer from me first that Ken would make it and second that Beaver would make it too!
You two have always ranked right up there on my list as being true Good Guzzi folks.
As I said Ken sometimes I pray but I certainly don't like to
so quit this going down cause your taxing my life style  :thumb:

Hi y'all. I don't have a computer where we are and we can't use our old-fashion flip phones to get online, so I snuck away to my house to get on to my computer here. Ken is working hard with OT & PT trying to get better. Both have given him exercises to work on over the weekend, so I'll have to get my whip out and make him do them! That'll be fun!
He still tires out pretty quick, but is getting better. The PT had him doing 4 sets of 4 reps of each exercise Wednesday: 4 laps around the carport, 4 standup/sitdowns from the wheelchair, and several other exercises. Then it was all repeated 4 times. The OT is also a singer and so he sometimes sings to us while he's working. He's working on Ken's arms and getting the muscles loosened up and working again. Ken almost cried "Uncle" once or twice, but he didn't and then it got easier. It's hard watching it, but I will have to do those exercises on the days that the OT is not there and so he had to teach me.
I secretly sneak treats to Mr. Wilson who eats them when Ken's sleeping. Wilson wants his cat daddy to think he's making a big sacrifice so Ken will get better.
Ken's daughters and some friends have stocked our freezer/fridge with enough food to last at least another month so the kangaroo or wallaby is safe for now. Thumper has stomped down the turnip patch though, so I'm not sure how much longer he'll be safe around here.
This Ninja Warrior broke her arm the same day Ken broke his. She came over to visit and compare casts and brought her kitty cat to visit with Mr Wilson.
(http://thumb.ibb.co/gNP0Cb/DSCN0757.jpg) (http://ibb.co/gNP0Cb)
The next day, Ken got his right arm cast off and replaced with a splint/brace. The bones are starting to heal and will just take time.

Thank you to all who have sent well-wishes, positive thoughts and prayers our way. We sure appreciate it! I will update when I can.

In honor of your efforts, "they've" named tonight's full moon the "Beaver Moon".

Do we have any wallaby trainers here ? Ken called this morning and mentioned that he was making progress , had told his daughter that in a few weeks his hands would be able to work the controls on a motorbike . Daughter , being much like dad asked "That's great dad , but how are ya gonna put on your pants?" So we need a wallaby trainer to teach Hoppy how to help a rather large Texan put on his britches
Anyway , Ken says HI , and wanted me to remind everyone that he will be at Cedar Vale , so be careful what you say about him while he is incapacitated

If you need me too, I can send back the can of armadillo assholes that Ken handed out at the rally(s). I've kind been hanging onto it for an emergency.
You'll have to ask him about that.

I suppose he'll be going down to the Lindale truck stop for nightly physical therapy soon. :thumb:

Since his near-death experience, Tex has become more cultured and no longer avows that product. He's directed the staff to repackage them as "Armadillo Anuses".

Good to hear Ken is on the mend well. Don't they make overalls with a trap door? May be something to consider.

i just spent an hour laughin at a lot of the posts. didn't know i had so many friends, can only type with some fingers n right hand.
what a relief to get the big cast off right hand so beaver can eat a hot meal and i can feed myself.
i want you all to know that if it wasn't for geoganne i would have been put in a nursing home or a dumpster  the wallaby would keep me warm.

Glad to see your back on the board, Ken, we was without adult supervision but made it through somehow, even Dusty was worried.

No, Dusty. We believe you about the wallaby. It's Tex and Beaver that we doubt.

A distinct possibility.
Naw, we don't think they are mythical creatures, but there is some suspicion that their creatures are mythical.
Got a call from Ken yesterday. Missed it, but he left a message. He says he walked a thousand feet (he didn't say if those were regular feet or his size 16 feet) and that he's got the free use of one arm now. He's graduating from a heavy PT regimen to more regular activities. He says all the credit goes to Georganne, but I suspect that he doesn't want to be upstaged by the wallaby. As always, he joked a lot in the message and sounded very positive. He says God has blessed him with good friends and a smooth recovery. I agree.
-
He says... he's got the free use of one arm now.
Does he have to pay to use the other? Maybe we could send up some crowdfunding...

Ken says he talked his doctor into removing his purse , which makes him very happy

Oh -- now I get it. He told me they were removing his pecan, which had me going in a completely nother direction.
. . .and speaking of purses, did he mention the wallaby? With the big dinner coming up tomorrow and Tex not being able to scrape up the traditional possum, I'm getting nervous for any marsupials within reach.

So will Tex.
Thinking it over, Hoppy has no worries. I was there for Thanksgiving last year. All Tex's possum recipes start with
"1) After reinflating and disinfecting, ensure that all road debris and bone fragments are removed." :food:
Tex is a well squared-away sailor. He goes by the numbers. :afro: He'd never get past that first step with Hoppy, so the others won't happen.

HANG IN THERE, KEN! Put on one of those ugly shirts if yours, and give 'em hell!!!

Tom, The first few weeks were not the best and visitors would have wanted a refund . Still lots of work to make the left arm as long as the right. .
Doc sez no cigars. I want the 14 bones to heal so the cigars are safe in the humidors.
I'm a very thankful man after going to the Dallas VA few weeks ago. If your dandruff is causing deep trama....visit a VA hospital.
