Title: Cal 2 auto using Convert parts?
Post by: brider on September 30, 2017, 09:02:41 AM
I know this has been discussed before, but I looked and didn't hit the right "buzzwords". Please steer me to the build threads if they exist.

Is it possible to use Convert timing cover, cam, TC, tranny, swingarm, etc, to build a Cal 2 Auto? Is it all just bolt-up?

If memory serves me well, then all you need is the Torque Converter, Gearbox and Clutch and the Final Drive Box from the convert

Maybe check up on rodekylls trike thread. I know he had an hydro engine with the convert torque converter on and later installed a breva engine in his.

Yes, it can be done because Guzzi did it! There were California IIs sold with that drivetrain.
You will need all the convert goodies. Cam, front engine cover, hoses, fittings, oil tank, shift linkage, flywheel, torque converter, transmission, U-joint and shaft, and rear drive box. I may have overlooked something.
But to your main concern, it is a bolt up project.  The only big hassles are swapping the cam and relocating the ignition coils.

Thanks! Just wanted to see if there was something different about that Cal II Tonti frame/engine that made the timing covers unique.

The Cal II swingarm was longer, so I guess as long as the rear drive box and tranny from the Convert are used, it's all good?

Wonder why there aren't a lot of conversions....seem s like a lot of Convert parts floating around.

Converts are an acquired taste, not many folks would go to the trouble although it has been done to most Guzzis that use the similar driveline.
For the Cal II you may need a unique to that model U-joint/shaft assembly due to the longer swing arm. You will need to consult a knowledgeable older dealer like Harpers, MG Cycle or Cycle Garden to find one. I doubt that the shorter swingarm from the Convert would work satisfactorily with the Cal II frame.

The longer Cal II automatic driveshaft can be hard to find, it has 10 splines at the U joint and 20 were it connects to the convert rear end. I looked around a long time and got one out of Europe, TLM.  The shorter convert swingarm will fit, but shock length will likely need to be changed and handling will be changed as mentioned.
