What is that?  Some mix of berries or acorns or ?  Where do you live?  Doesn't look like a true carnivore scat or deer/elk either... how well do you know your neighbors?

My tracking book has a photo of Elk scat that looks like this, but I'm in Connecticut so we don't have a lot of elk and it was on my top stair to my second floor deck. Kind of looks like berries. I think I need a critter cam.

I'd say racoon or opossom

Do you have racoons in your region?

My guess would also be raccoon. Don't have a biker berry bar next door?

Coyotes leave similar.   I should add, they like prominent placement too.

But seriously, I'd bet the farm that's raccoon--have seen plenty of similar near my raccoon-laden woods/pond.  They will visit the same places over and over.  BTW, they carry a really nasty roundworm and pass the eggs in their stool.  This particular roundworm can do ugly things in people, so clean up well and wash your hands.  And cover sandboxes--they, and cats with their own ugly parasites, look at sandboxes as luxury tirlets.  Disgusting stuff, I know...at least I didn't post any pictures.
Steve
PS--I leave the raccoons alone when they are in their environment.  When they enter mine (my garage), I use a box trap with the cheapest nastiest can of cat food as bait.  Almost too easy.  It's their last meal...I return them to their environment to become one with it and take their place in the circle of life.

Possibly fox. It looks like what our foxes leave behind. Generally fox and raccoon scat look like smaller dog or cat poop according to Scats and Tracks of the Northeast.

I've always said that Guzzi Guys know their sh!t..
I'm betting 'coon, too. They're everywhere. Dorcia and I were walking down the PCH in Redondo Beach last week, and a big old coon walked out on the sidewalk, had a look at us, and scuttled back into the bushes. They are definitely *not* vegans, though.. if you have chickens.. just sayin.

We have booth raccoons and fox's around and once in a while a coyote. I don't think it is fox because my chipmunk population exploded this year.

Doesn't look like fox. In the Winter, raccoons commonly feast on berries and seeds.

Racoon. Clean the area with bleach/water 1:10 solution. Put some moth balls in the area, should keep them away.

Omnivore scat, mostly likely a racoon but fox do eat berries at times..And coyotes are opportunist feeders so they might eat anything when hungry...

Funny, I saw similar scat in my backyard the other day.  First I thought it was a small dog (despite my yard being fenced) but with nuts and acorns mixed in it.

Concluded it was a racoon.  Don't think a possum could get in.  Don't know about Armadillos.

Would NE Coyote poop be so different? I can't vouch for much, but I'm certain our Coyote poop is not berry like. It's twisted and ropey. Always black from blood meals. The picture, w/out dimensions, btw, looks like deer scat. Deer scat is easy to pick up, collect and 'dump' on your best friends steps. DAMHIK.  R3~

I'd say racoon or opossom

I can eliminate opossum.  We had one for a couple years, and it what it produced looked very much like what a human produces, and not much smaller.

I see your " not much smaller ", and raise you a " Little Potato Head ". You should fold while you can.

Little Po-Po, as he is now referred to, moved into our apartment one summer, while he/she/it was about the size of a kitten .... or a rat, depending on your perspective.

There was a lot of drinking going on at that time, so it took us a while to figure this out. We leave the front door and the sliding patio window open a lot - unlike you frontier dwellers, the wilderness is accessed differently here in the wilds of Escondido.

I noticed a little sound behind the couch late one night, but didn't say anything because I wasn't up for a pursuit/capture that evening. A couple of weeks later I woke to what I pronounced as " there's something outside the window ". Despite what [Chuck in Indiana] says, I'm a light sleeper. After a few minutes, I said " No, it's in the corner by the curtains ". Sure enough, it was.

My wife said " Do we have to chase it around ? " While keeping an eye on it (under the bed now) I replied " No, not if you'll go get one of my spearguns off the wall ". She elected to instead follow my instructions and build me a snake snare from a broom handle and some Guzzi wire (Guzzi content) - I love that woman, remind me to tell you sometime about how i talked her through filling, closing and tapping a keg of homebrew on the phone while I was at work.

He was wise to that game, and I wound up moving furniture around until he went up a curtain and I wrapped him in a towel.

About a half hour later, I had a baby possum wrapped in a towel. His little poops were like rabbit pellets, behind the couch and in the spare bedroom/garage. Probably pretty slim pickings for him.

No idea why he pooped like a rabbit, but you can find all the photos of normal 'possum poop you (don't) want to see, with Google images.  I'm surprised you found the poop where you did, because their instinct is to poop in shallow water if they can find some.  All you need to do to catch a 'possum is pick it up gently.  Use leather gloves if you're concerned.   The usual sequence is it'll open its mouth and show its many needle-like teeth to scare you, but not actually bite, and then if you keep reaching for it, it'll "play 'possum" and fake falling asleep.  At least this is all true for the ones in the back woods of NC.

When we had the pet 'possum, it quickly got used to us enough to stop showing its teeth when approached, but it took a while for it to stop falling asleep when touched.  Eventually it would just hang out with us in the evenings when we watched TV.

" their instinct is to poop in shallow water if they can find some "

This is Southern California. Our possums don't even know that shallow water exists.

Here's some SoCal shallow water. They don't do lakes very well..  if you look closely, much of it is about a foot deep.
Edit for pitcher..

My aunt & uncle had 2 'possum siblings as pets.  Mom had been hit by a car, and the babies were sitting atop her, eyes aglow in the headlights.  So of course, you pull over, scoop up these two little balls of bitting, hissing cuteness, and bring them home!  Mister, and Missy grew to be quite the household characters, and were happy to burrow behind your back for a nap.  As long as you kept your movements slow, they were happy, albeit not to smart, companions.  If they felt threatened, they'd cower, hiss, and stare until you slowed down, but they never bit.
