Title: Who had their 8V Tappets Covered?
Post by: jlburgess on November 02, 2017, 08:41:22 PM
Can anyone name one instance in the US where Piaggio footed the bill for the roller tappets?  I think I'm fighting a losing battle.  Please respond only if you paid or they paid for the parts!
Thanks.

My 2011 had 12K miles when I had it rollerized. One side was just beginning to show the wear and the other still looked fine. Moto Guzzi paid out $0.

They paid for the parts and I paid the labor.  No hassle.  2011 Griso performed by Matthews Fun Machines.

My 2011 Griso was covered in full at 6K miles, thanks to Alex at Thousand Oaks Powersports. Both sides already were showing the bullseye wear pattern. Mine was the easiest of the 3 kits. I suppose that had something to do with it. I know of at least 3 others on Griso Ghetto who had it covered in full as well. It seems it's a matter of how well connected the dealership is. If Piaggio regards them as important, they do the right thing. If not, well, good luck.

If the bike is still under warranty, (2 years from original purchase), they will cover the labor. If not then they only cover the parts. The latter was the case with my '09 Stelvio. No hassle at all. I paid the labor and PGA covered the parts.

My local dealer here  in the UK did occasionally manage to get Guzzi to pay for the whole procedure but he had a very good relationship with the factory for some reason. Mostly though he charged a reasonable labour rate and Guzzi only stumped up for the parts.
When he was selling the last of the 8v 1200 Sports part of the deal was to buy the bike and he would immediately put in a warranty claim for rollers, which he got away with. Once he sold the remaining stock he gave up his official Guzzi franchise and the brand lost probably the best technical dealer they had in the UK.

Out of warranty...they paid nothing.  I did have a full service history and the tappets showed significant wear.

the cams also showed discoloration.  My dealer was in the process of dropping Guzzi (still had MV, Piaggio, and Aprilia).

We provided photos of wear.

I actually threw some of these out the other day! I've still got about sixty in a bucket under the bench. It's useful for convincing the doubters that their flat tappet shitters need Rollerising.

While ther's nothing I can do about it one thing that does piss me off is people who accept their tappets are doomed and then I see their bike advertised without full disclosure. Dishonest and dishonourable behaviour in my book.

I know a shop that thinks that's normal wear and those parts are immaculate.  Pfft!  :boxing:

as bad as it is, without Pete Roper, it would be much worse.

Even better, early on Pete didn't think there was a problem and that the DLC "fix" was good except for maybe colder, wetter climates.  Once he rollered Mark's bike bike, however, he came here and gave everyone with 8V's the bad news.  He then became the king of rollerizing and answered every post on every board with, "has it been rollerized"  to make sure all riders all over the world got the cams addressed.  Good on him.

Thanks to Pete and Mark I now have the bike I've always wanted and it runs fabulously.  That they live in another hemisphere and have some very strange language barriers makes it all the more impressive.
