Just started to notice how few vehicles these days have pinstripes. When and why did they fall out of fashion?

Oh about 25 years ago, but the last 5 years I think there's been somewhat of a resurgence with the retro cool thing.

Depends how it is used. I like it as an extra touch to the front fender.

I found it difficult to find somebody interested in doing in situ pinstripe work on Josie, the Bassa Rat. Few people doing stripes these days apparently, and everybody wanted the bike torn down so they could work on the bench. I don't blame them, but it's my daily rider, so do it in place or not.
The guy I had do it did not deliver the precision of work I had hoped for, but he met the mission parameters - mask the through holes and abrasion lines left by the plastichrome removal. It was amusing to watch people eyeball it at the rally.

From what I recall, pinstripes died somewhere around 1985 - though there are a few exceptions. Many Rolls-Royces are still delivered with pinstripes, hand-painted of course.
I rather liked the minimalist pinstripes used on cars such as my 1981 Fiat X1/9, but the problem was that some people (and factory designers) didn't know when to stop. This way lies madness - and the Trans-Am fire-breathing chicken!

Well, that little old lady that did it at the factory died long time ago. Seen a pic from the 80's where she sat at the end of production line.

Just as a point of interest- on BMWs at least into the airhead era, pinstripes were hand painted and the artist signed their initials somewhere on the bike.

I have to admit, they do seem to have fallen out of fashion. OTOH, I have received tons of compliments on this:

Perhaps they'll make a comeback. It all goes round in circles anyway.

Pinstripes dead? Hell no. Every bike event I have ever been to has at least 2, and they are always busy.
I am trying to revive an are that was big around here 50 years ago. Doilies. They would lay the doilie over a fender or tank and give it a light spray to 'ghost' it over the paint.
Grandma was sure pissed.
