That's pretty good oil. I was using it after Kendall changed. Now I am using the motorcycle Valvoline 20/50 for aircooled twins and valve tappet noise is less than w/I used VR1 car oil.

Use it in my LM2.
Has high zinc / phosphorus, which is good...apparently.

Yes.  Valvoline VR-1 is a popular choice over on bobistheoilguy.com, good stuff as far as I gather.

If this stuff is so great for one motor what is it not great for another. Is the difference of motor between my calvin motor that drastic? This is hard for an old guy to rap his head around:(

The Calvin is a strange case no doubt...

Another Cali 1100 running solely on VR1 right here. My Jackal loves the stuff. I was thinking about the motorcycle variant, good to hear a vote in favor.

After reading a recommendation from Charlie Mullendore, I put Valvolene VR-1 in my refreshed V50II when she went back on the road last July.  This dino oil seems to check all the boxes:  perfect 20W-50 viscosity range, high zinc/phosphorus,  intended for high-performance racing engines, but relatively inexpensive.  Well-suited for frequent oil changes.  I'm pleased with the results, as the engine appears to like this oil quite well.  I think this is an excellent engine oil for older generation carbed Guzzi motors with modest specific output, designed for leaded fuel and zinc-supplemented oils.

For the newer, higher-output FI engines, there is a reason 60W synthetics are prescribed and I would certainly stick to manufacturer's  recommendations.

Mike Harper told me to use Valvoline racing oil 28 years ago, never changed brands one time

It should be ok for the CalVin. BUT it is not like an EV, it is a B11 motor.

I expect that the Vintage uses the high dollar synthetic to make up for the really lean tuning. Newer machines have to pass a much tougher set of environmental regulations than older ones. The synthetic resists heat a little better than mineral motor oils and the CalVin produces lots of heat due to the very lean tuning as stock. Under extreme conditions, the synthetic will maintain viscosity about twice as long as mineral oils.

This is yet another reason to re-flash your fuel injection CPU. Just changing to 10W-50 Synthetic will save you a bunch of money come oil change time. Castrol makes a great 10W-50 synthetic for under $8 a quart...

Big Valvoline fan here. Good specs on it plus it is often priced really well at big box stores. I buy it in 5 quart bottles for my truck and bike. Can't use it in my old Bullet 500 though as that thing calls for straight weight 30w just like my lawn mowers do.  :cheesy:
