Title: Steam Powered Rocket Launch.
Post by: Tom on November 21, 2017, 12:48:00 PM
This guy wants to launch a steam powered rocket in California.  The launch after that will be from a balloon.

He's launching himself this Saturday???  Ought to be interesting!
With a moniker like Mad Mike Hughes, what could go wrong?

Here ya go:

On the morning of the launch, Hughes will heat about 70 gallons of water in a stainless steel tank and then blast off between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. He plans to go about a mile reaching an altitude of about 1,800 feet before pulling two parachutes. Theyre discouraging fans safety issues but it will be televised on his YouTube channel . He said hes been in contact with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Bureau of Land Management.

Following his jump, he said hes going to announce his plans to leap into the race for governor of California.

  I'm okay with him doing all of it.  This covered in the U.S. Constitution.  "Pursuit of Happiness".  As long as no harms comes to others.

" He said hes been in contact with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Bureau of Land Management. "

Yeah - I'll wager the FAA said " good luck with that " and the BLM said " you have to pick up anything you drop ".

Now, if he were to use super heated steam at high pressure he might get somewhere.. And be well done when he gets there.
I remember some sort of eruption, where superheated stream rose through a fissure in the earth. It propelled a metal object on the surface into space. I just can't remember when or well and I just don't feel like looking it up. So, mad Mike might not be far off .

Did anyone see the Myth Busters episode where they blocked the relief valve on a water heater? They had it set in a constructed room with a ceiling and roof as a common house would have. If i remember it exceeded 350 feet altitude straight up after blowing through the roof.

I predict an Evel Knevel Snake River canyon type of event . Guy doesn't "believe" in science , and yet has used it (well sorta ) to build this contraption . Really hope a film crew is there to document his attempt , this will be a Darwin moment .

There have been a few water heaters launched thru the roofs of houses.  Anything is possible.

Sounds to me like the manhole cover from that early nuclear test .....

Not just that, he's literally claiming that he's doing this to prove the Earth is flat.

On the assumption that all the propulsion gear is behind the cockpit I guess he has a space maybe 12 foot long and 4 foot in diameter

He can't possibly be carrying fuel & water to make flash steam so that must be pretty much one big pressurised steam vessel.

I predict that if he manages to get it moving he'll be lucky not to damage the cab of the RV launch vehicle

....... unless that is he's suckered us all and is going down the aircraft carrier catapult philosophy in which case I hope he leaves the door open for the cats

NEWS FLASH!!!!!

The launch has been cancelled because the inventor invented his federal permissions to fly it over BLM land.  Can you say "Elio?"

I just read that it's been postponed until next week so it can be moved to "an unincorporated community in the Mojave Desert along historic Route 66."
