Wow, that's pretty cool!
Diesel fuel economy on gasoline.
I imagine a hybrid sedan or coupe with this engine could get 60-70 MPG.

Interesting article.  But Inquiring Minds want to know exactly how Nissan varies the compression ratio. 

That sounds like a mechanical nightmare, on the order of providing dynamically variable valve lift.
