I bought the pictured photo at a garage sale. Wichita is rich in related history. The picture has to do with the "Hound Dog" missile project from the early 60s. There is no indication who this was intended for but appears to have signatures of those who may have worked on the project. The one signature that caught my attention was that of "Clarance Johnson" Is this possibly the "Clarance "Kelly" Johnson of great aviation design fame (P-38, U-2, SR-71 and many, many others)? Although his career was at Lockheed could he have maybe consulted on the project?
Doing an internet search, did not come up with anything conclusive. It seems he would sign his name in different ways, i.e. might be C.L.Johnson, or Clarance L. Johnson, or Clarance "Kelly" Johnson. The "Clarance" looks pretty close but his "J" does not seen to mach well. Still cool never less. Think I paid under $10 for it.

Some of the guys out at China Lake in CA might know something. I'll ask a buddy of mine if he knows anything.

And BTW it's Clarence with an e.

Doesn't look like it unfortunately.

A number of years ago I would go to AZ in early spring to ride. I enjoy gawking @ almost all aeroplanes.
(spelling to suggest my age?) I would always drop by the museum, in Tucson. One time I walked in a hanger and found an SR71. There was also a very long stage, inhabited by a serious brace of (10 or so), Lockheed engineers; all from the slide rule era. What a fabulous sight to see. Made me misty as I listened while wandering about, under that plane. Truly good stuff. R3~

.....all from the slide rule era.....
Mhhh - slide rule
Now there's a clever thing - I think mine from school is still lurking in my (or my parents) loft :thumb:
I was at the transition so the first set of school exams were done with slide rule ans/or log tables and the next ones a calculator was allowed which was considered tantamount to cheating sat the time IIRC
How times change

Wow...great video...just a hoot to watch. Loved it all but the story related to the ground speed check was priceless! Might head over to the Hill AFB museum this weekend and take a closer look at that SR-71 they have parked there.
