Title: Camshaft recommendation needed
Post by: Falcolion on December 26, 2017, 01:08:18 PM
My bike have a problem with a camshaft and need to get it replaced. So, here is my dilemma

I have a spare all stock engine with around 3k miles on it. So, I can take the cam out of there but I always wanted to get a little more power for my V11. I am thinking of upgrading camshaft but since our bikes are not getting any younger it’s getting hard to get any performance upgrades.

That’s were you guys come in. Since this is extremely knowledgeable forum I have always listened to owners who did the upgrades or have technical expertise. Here is my list but I am not 100% certain

1. Mike Rich lists camshaft (800-620x10), performance valve springs and pistons or (800-620x9) with stock pistons. Unfortunately I cannot get in touch with him for the last 2 weeks and he is not responding to emails or voicemails. From everything I read it would have been the awesome setup

2. Ghezzi Brian 2 valve power kit http://www.ghezzi-brian.com/en/tuning-moto/tuning-moto-guzzi/v11-1100-sport-daytona-centauro/2235-2/ Sounds good but never heard of it and probably would be a lot more $$$$.

3. Then there Dynotec http://www.dynotec.de/index.html. No idea about the price and quality. All I know is that they make stuff. All I know that Raceco which is closed now is forwarding everyone to Dynotec

4. Does-Mototec is supposedly also known tuner but I have no clue about their pricing or availability. http://www.daes-mototec.de/index.php/motoroptimierung-moto-guzzi.html

5. The last one is HMB-guzzi in Germany. I don’t see anything for V11 but maybe they have it. http://hmb-guzzi.de/Engine-Tuning-Repair?lang=eng

6. Megacycle cams. I think Mike Rich sells Megacycles but grinded to his specs. Megacycle lists a few options but their list is for 750/850 engines. I thought it would be same for 1064 engine
620x10, 620x8 or 620x7

Any recommendations based on personal experience and/or technical expertise would be highly appreciated

Thanks
Vlad

X9 Megacycle is more streetable than X10 may need some mods. Lot's of info out there. Have him flow your heads first.

guzzisteve, thanks for your reply. So, what you are saying is that Megacycle X9 should be just fine and X10 will require some mods. Is that correct?

I could not find any definite answer anywhere on Megacycle fitment that is why I was posting here and looking for know how/expertise of people on this forum.

Who should flow heads? Mike Rich or ???

Thanks
Vlad

Big Block are mostly the same size for cams. I put a X9 in a Griso w/stock stuff. I know of a X10 in a Scura that is a monster above 6K rpm, he did his own flowing.
Mike Rich did the Griso heads, nice work. There are others familiar w/Guzzi heads, I think Ace Mallot was doing some of that.
I think doing the heads is what makes it all work.

I have an X10 in my 1000SP engine'd Loop. It did require machining the piston valve pockets which was done after machining the cyl. bases to get the squish clearance down to .040" from ~.060". It's got 36 Dellortos, but otherwise stock small valve. Runs great, idles nicely, bags of grunt. My only quibble would be that the fuel consumption is not what I would like even after dyno tweaking and further fiddle and it seems a little shakier than ones I've ridden with a B10. If I was doing over, probably just stick with a B10 and call it good.

I have a X9 in my 850T with 36mm carbs. It's a nice improvement for a small valve twin. If I was modifying a V11 Sport I'd go with something a lot more aggressive as the stock cam is pretty good already.

Guzzisteve, Griso is much closer in setup to V11 then 850T or 1000SP. From what I know Moto Guzzi used their experience and expertise and made hotter camshaft for V11 sport/Le Mans/Scura/Ballabio.

So, by you saying that you installed X9 is a big plus. So, if I understand you correctly you got Megacycle 620x9 camshaft. Did it go right in?

Do you personally know the owner of the Scura with X10 that you are describing as a monster?

If you do, then it would be awesome if Scura owner chimes in.

Thanks

No issues w/instalation. Heads on the G were done by Mike Rich and flowed almost twice the CFM, valves were sunk, heads cut, lots of compression. I checked all clearances.
Edit: Looked up notes, Griso has a X10 in it.

Here is the Scura--http://racingsportservices.com/
You could call Chris, he does lot's of race engines.

X-10 makes more sense. I'd think a X-9 wouldn't make that big of a difference as it's pretty mild ( although much better than the stock lawnmower cam ).

Turin, thanks for recommendation. I guess from what I can gather from these replies is that Mike Rich’s camshaft and Megacycle are one and the same even though Mike’s lift numbers are different for some reason.

So, if one would want to stay close to OEM but have better camshaft then X9 is fine. But if more power is desired then some extra $$$ should be spent on heads flowing and sinking valves.

Hopefully some more people can chime in on the experience with German made camshafts.

Thanks
Vlad

I have a HMB 8.1 cam in my small valve G5. Comes with heavy duty valve springs. Bike runs very well.

HMB have loads of great stuff - definitely worth contacting Michael there for advice (English speaker).

I didn't mean that at all. The X-9 is great on any Guzzi that came with the lawnmower cam ( 850 T3, convert, EV1100, cali 1100, Mille, Quota, etc. )

The lemans 1000 came with the b-10 cam which was the race cam for the previous 3 series of lemans.

The 1100 sport (same as v11 sport )came with it's own cam (  1064cc Wittner/Crane Sport cams 3705 3305) designed by Dr John Wittner and Crane Cams it's got to be pretty good.

I don't know if you'd actually be making a significant difference putting an X-9 in a V11 sport.

I didn't want to steer you wrong. It would be nice if there was a comparison between megacycles offerings, B-10, P3, and 1100 Sport cams.
