Title: Indiana Moto Guzzi Not-A-Rally June 1,2,3 2018
Post by: kidsmoke on January 24, 2018, 02:41:43 PM
Indianapolis has an annual event now known as the "The Reunion Motorcycle Show", formerly known as the Rockers Reunion. Organizers changed, and the name did as well, as I understand it. I have not attended this show, so I can't speak from experience, but I'm under the impression it's more of a hipster tinged event, lots of rat bikes, vintage and resto-mods. Street vendors, food tents etc. Tends to be pretty well attended and something of a regional event, drawing from Cincinnati, Louisville and Chicago respectably.

A local Indy Guzzisti, younger guy very much in that scene and an organizer of other well attended local motorcycle events, most notably the Indy Mad Max Run, approached me about allowing my place to be used as a rally type site for that same weekend, so that we could attract and amass regional Guzzisti around the rocker event. I said sure.

I have many acres, several lawn, several heavily wooded, walk out basement with shower. There will be ample room for tents, a porto John, fire pit, large grill(s), tire swing, fishable Creek. It's a secluded park like setting, all only 20 minutes from downtown Indy.

This coincides with the Indiana Guzzi Luncheon, 1st Sunday of every month.

The plan at this point is something like this:

Friday through Sunday AM June 1,2,3rd 2018

Saturday, ride  to Rockers and attend. Return to Traders Point (my place) for lodging and socializing. (several hotels within 2 miles, several more within 6)

Sunday AM "Covered Bridge Ride" west of Indianapolis, ending with Lunch in Lebanon (20 minutes from my place)

Be on your way after lunch.

Obviously quantity of Attendees and content of same will dictate what Sunday's ride(s) look like. Chuck has thrown his hat in, so a smaller, fast paced ride is likely, in addition to a more "tour" oriented ride as well. But this is all speculative at this point.

There's a facebook event created by the organizer that I'm attaching here. I realize that's not viewable for everyone, feel free to contact me with any questions. Also attaching the Reunions page, for reference.

So, yeah. Yer all invited.

It'll be a good time. Kip has an amazing place for a not a rally, especially considering how close it is to Indy.
Put it on your calendars..
What used to be called the "Rocker's reunion" is fun, too. It's in a renovated section of Indy. Many bikes and riders of all kinds show up. Lots of classics and antiques along with the.. uh.. customs.  Local food is good, too. Lemee see if I have a picture from last year..

Ahh, here we go..

I may be able run up for the bike viewing on Saturday.  That's a busy time on my Riding Calendar with the ROK Beemer rally in TN the previous weekend and the WNY Guzzi rally the following weekend.

So many events -- so little time.

I'd jump The River and get to I-57 ASAP.  Follow that north to I-70 East to Indy and then I-465 North to the NW corner of the city.

Ride safe.

Thanks just the same, but on the map there are a LOT of twisty, interesting roads I'd much rather take than the excrutiatingly BORING U.S. Interstate Highway System...kidsmoke has given me some tips for that part of the country...

Good for you.  Let us know what you think.  I've been across Illinois many times to the Beemer Falling Leaf Rally in early October.  All of the two-lane roads are about the same.  Pretty Boring.

You're going to be crossing it in early June.  The southern half of the state, actually most of the northern half also, are into farming.  That means beans on the left, corn on the right -- or vice versa.  Unless there's a flood along the rivers, then it's just brown.

Have a good trip and ride safe.

Well we’ll just see if Jerry’s coffee is up to this hipsters standards [emoji6]. I do have a personal rally French press but no portable bean grinder. And I have yet to invest in the BMW adventure rider’s staple of a jet boil, even if I admit I have looked at them. I think their demographic is BMW GS riders [emoji6] us Guzzi riders are simple folk, so I do look forward to Jerry’s coffee.

It's forever since I've been there but my brother lived in Southern Ill for decades and I attended SIU in Carbondale. Also lived in central Ill and used to go to the flat tracks in Louisville taking back roads through southern Ill and Indiana. Southern Ill and Indians is great riding country. Here something to consider.
Illinois Route 3North to 146 EAST through the Shawnee National Forrest. Route 34 (in the Shawnee National Forrest) north to Karber's Ridge Road. Take KRR to Route 1 north. Then off Route 1 to Peabody road NE becomes Ringgold Road to Old Shawnee Town. Take route 14 into Old Shawnee Town and cross the Ohio River on route 56.  Stay on 56 east around Morganfield and then pickup route 60 East to 41 north.
Then slab it on I-69 to Bloomington and then route 37 into Indy.

The Rocker's Reunion was a motorcycle show put on by the Ton-Up Club chapter of Indianapolis, of which I am an active member.  Originally, it was primarily a vintage/cafe racer show held outside of the Melody Inn... a much seedier part of town.  As it grew, we added more categories, and we eventually needed to find a better location that would work with us and Fountain Square was a perfect fit.  The show became a whole bunch of work and a lot less fun than it used to be... too many chiefs and not enough indians, etc.  Long story short, we passed the show along to a willing and talented group of folks, some of which are members of Ton-Up Indy, and you now have The Reunion.  I am planning to attend, and would love to meet up with you guys and hang out, although this puts some pressure on me to get my Stoney 1100 roadworthy for such a gathering.  I am currently working on one of my other machines to take to another Ton-Up show, The Meltdown Vintage Motorcycle Show down in Hendersonville, NC on April 28.  Any Guzzisti near Hendersonville should come out to that!

astride a Guzzi otherwise,  be great to meet you. I'm thinking we may have crossed paths at other Indy events. Parish has put together an event page on Facebook for this also. (assuming you know him...he organizes the Mad Max run as well.)

Cheers

Can usually be found at the Steer Inn events as well. There's only a couple of us on Guzzi's, and, well, we tend to congregate.

Hey, Chuck, my brother has been rehabbing an MZ Skorpion Sport, and he will likely be riding it over there next month if the stars align.  There will be no missing him on that thing!  Big guy... unfortunate paint scheme... loud.

what d'ya mean "help" cook? I thought you WERE the cook? That's why your camper is going next to the cabin!

Turns out the Guzzisti who came up with this whole rally in my yard idea (he thoughtfully chose the late hours of a bourbon tasting to share his concept) is tight with "The Reunion" organizers, and they will be providing us an area to park together at the event. At this point it's sounding like a dozen or so Guzzi's spanning 40+ years. That's almost respectable.

Also means that we'll want arrive en masse to the degree possible, so if you're rolling in from Cincinnati or Louisville or Columbus In, for example, for the day, try to coordinate with one of us setting out from Traders Point.

How are you going to feed the hoards, Kip? I'd (cough cough) cough up a hunnerd bux and help cook if necessary.

I can answer this now...

Friday evening will be burgers and dogs over charcoal, Coolers will be provided, some stocked for sharing, some available to be stocked and shared.

Saturday AM: Coffee, juice, muffins, coffee, fruit, coffee, maybe some donuts etc. Coffee. You get the idea.

Saturday lunch: word is they get some pretty good offerings at the Reunion.

Saturday evening: this is where it gets good. David Dugger and his lovely wife Diana have, for the last 11 years, hosted a Moto Guzzi Spaghetti feed. Things had interfered this spring and it didn't go off as planned. David leapt at the opportunity to keep the fire burning and will head up the dinner, therebye making this event the Indiana Moto Guzzi Not-a-Rally/12th annual Moto Guzzi Spaghetti Feed/Indy Reunion weekend.

David and Diana will park the RV on the grounds and take the lead in preparation for our evening spread. We may even get civilized and have wine.

Sunday Morning: see 'Saturday Morning' above.

After breakfast, for those not yet wishing or needing to get away from the rest of us, we're discussing routes for a 60 miler or such, ending in the monthly Guzzi luncheon in lovely downtown Lebanon Indiana, in the shadows of the Boone County Courthouse, only 20 minutes from my place in Traders Point.  The courthouse is on the National Register of Historic places. When it was completed in 1911, the Ionic columns supporting the the porticoes and the art glass dome were the largest in America. Maybe not a Frank Lloyd Wright hotel, but, we do what we can.

BCC, with a dash of irony

If you mean at "The Reunion" I believe Jeff is planning us to be there at noon. If you want to ride in with us, I'd plan to be at Traders Point by 11. if I'm not mistaken you're also on the Facebook page for this event. Maybe raise the issue there and Jeff can respond to you directly. He's the point person for the Reunion event related stuff

Still working on the Cali Stone!  Probably won't have it done by then, but I am really trying.  Waiting on ordered parts, etc.  Ultimately, it will be the simple tank script and paintwork that will hold me up.  Most definitely will be at the Reunion show, so I will track you all down then!  Should be easy to spot!

Guzzi group parking at the Reunion show will be available to those riding in together, otherwise you will be on your own finding a spot.  There is plenty of parking available, but you may or may not be able to park directly among the other Guzzi machines.  Event staff will likely park us, but they are not staking or reserving a specific area for us.  We could maybe leave a few spaces between when parking to accommodate others arriving later.

****UPDATE*****

Kip just called and said his son in in the ER in Chicago, and he may not be able to do this rally. I'll get with Jeff and see what he wants to do.

We’ll certainly Kips son being in ER has WAY more priority than hosting a rally.

Kip, hoping that things go well for your son and looking forward to meeting you soon. Maybe we should do a breakfast in Richmond?

First of all, thanks for the well wishes, and Chuck, for getting the word out.

My son suffered severe brain trauma after being assaulted outside a bar in Chicago Memorial Day weekend. He's been in ICU since. This was the reason we pulled the plug on the event, and I'm sorry. We were REALLY looking forward to it.

I should lead with the good news: Longterm prognosis is excellent. Having said that, he still on a feeding tube as his lucidity is fleeting and he's unable to sit up or swallow sufficiently for eating regular food. We don't know YET how slow this process will be.

He's been recommended for the Rehab Institute of Chicago, which is a peerless facility for this type of situation. Our hope is they will accept him and we will begin attacking the situation aggressively.

Thanks lads. Many of you, given our interests, are no doubt familiar with brain injuries and the recovery process. Sadly I'm joining your ranks.

My son: Name is Ben. 30 yr old. 6'7" sinewy good natured hard working kid. Initial police feedback is he looked at the wrong 'roider crosseyed, and paid a steep price. Much of that is not known until Ben can speak to police, after which they'll fill us in on what they know.

We're not defeatists in my tribe. We're meeting this head on (no pun intended) and I hope to share more celebratory news in the not too distant future.

Cheers.

Kip, I'm sorry to hear about your son. Of course family comes first, especially under the circumstances.

I'll be hoping he recovers quickly and the police are able to track down the one(s) who did this and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.

Best wishes for you and yours!

John Henry

Kip,

I can only echo John Henry’s words.

What an unwelcome & unwanted situation.

Next year we can do this again

Does the perp realize he's messing with a motorcycle gang?
Thanks for the update, Kip.. I hadn't told everyone exactly what happened. Believe me, we feel for you and yours. Naturally, all you have to do is call, and we'll do all we can. Need your chickens fed? Things done around the house? I assume your dog is with you.. but don't hesitate if you need anything at all.
Just a couple of pix from the Reunion. Several Guzzi guys were there.
Footgoose's beater Tenni..

Man o man. Kip, we haven’t met and I look forward to it.

But first - thinking about your family and your son, and hope that the situation resolves itself as quickly as possible and to the fullest extent.

Hey Gents,
I really appreciate the support. It's been an eventful week here in Chicago. Ben's regained ability to feed himself resulted in his being placed in a rehab institute which has extensive experience with these sorts of injuries.

He's been diagnosed with Diffuse Axonal Injury: DAI. the time frame for recovery essentially not given. It happens when, and if, it happens. He is good natured and talkative, soft spoken. he has ZERO short term memory. No idea where we are or why. Informing him of details is futile as they are lost in seconds.  The physical part, however, is progressing very well.

I've been here at the hospital for 2 weeks.  Returning to Indy tonight. Need my own bed. Need to preserve my employment, and see my dog. His Mom is here in Chicago and will continue to keep tabs as he remains in inpatient therapy. 2-4 weeks expected. Then, hopefully, he relocates to her spare room and continues outpatient. Odds are he'll need  constant supervision because the likelihood is that he'll not possess the tools to be alone, using appliances, not wandering off, etc. My father suffers from advanced Alzheimers.  It's surreal that he, and now my son, are sharing these traits.

Bringing this back around to the original topic of this post....I live in hope that at some point, likely several months from now, best case, he could come live with me for an extended period, and enjoy the park like setting of my home, while on his path to hopefully, a full recovery.

For the record, these are my kids. Ben is 30, Em is 26. She's here this weekend with us. She lives in seacoast New Hampshire where most of my family resides.

Thanks for sharing your story. I'm so sorry to hear what happened to your son.

I hope that he is able to make a full recovery, it's clear you will be there for him no matter what happens, and that says a lot.

Take care,

Joe
