Anyone following Knightfall on History channel? Every episode so far for me, except #6. For some reason episode 6 is blacked out on SlingTV (division of Dish Network).
Always been fascinated with that era. Would've liked to live back then, given: Modern dental & general hygeine products, modern vaccines, modern antibiotics (cure the plague...), and not being born into any tier of the lower social classes/castes. LoL !! Guess that's too many requirements.

We haven't been watching Knightfall, but have gotten hooked on The Vikings. It's like a violent soap opera for adults. They left us hanging Wednesday night, with more episodes on the way. What else does a person have to do when it's too cold to ride?

I thought I’d wait and download the entire season. The History Channel does a pretty good job with historical fiction. I’m also a big fan of “Vikings.” It is actually loosely based on the facts that are known about the real Ragnar, Lagertha, et al. Cool show...my wife loves it, too.

I'd start with hot running water, penicillin, and an understanding about germs ... a lot of the rest of it comes from there.
On the other hand, I wouldn't mind being in Bertie Wooster's shoes, as long as we're picking eras and social classes ... !

My interest in these shows is purely vicarious. I don’t think I could have been born in a better age than this one...

Yep, just an exercise, a "Gedankenexperiment" as they say .... I don't think I'd take a chance on swapping either, although I'll bet there's more stupid things that make me grit my teeth today than there were then ...

Read some Mark Twain or Will Rogers, Lannis. Their comments about the world in their time apply remarkably well nowadays. Humans are arrogant beings...we think everything begins and ends with ourselves. This dooms us to making the same errors over and over again. This will continue until we realize that it is not the answers we uncover that define us, but the questions we ask.

I've read everything Mark Twain ever wrote, got it on the shelf and read it over and over .... He was a pretty observant guy ....

+1 this is so true. It's corny as hell but the saying "those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it ...", is very true. Different times, different levels of technology or lack thereof but the same human behaviors.

It's w hat makes science fiction work. Trying to watch both, although hearing them clearly isnae easy. (That's the trouble with intrigue and hearing loss..bad combo. Fun to watch the Viking gals slice and dice with the best of them.

I won't live in a world without Moto Guzzis...

Now that IS a fantasy ... women in that day fighting men hand-to-hand or with swords. Easier to believe in Ewoks ....

Here is an interesting essay on the topic of Shieldmaidens. I also find it interesting that the preferred weapon for the mythical Amazons was also the ax...

I don't doubt they existed. Only that they were a lot more manly than Katheryn Winnick is...

Yes. Enjoying it. The scripting and acting isn't quite as good as I'd hoped it would be, but I'm enjoying the series.
Historical Fiction is always interesting. Like Vikings, the timeline is a little compressed. It's set in 1306, 15 years after the fall of Acre. But... Pope Boniface died in 1303. Joan of Navarre died in 1305. Still fun, though.
It's all working towards Friday, 13 October 1307. It will be interesting to watch.

I'm a fan of history...tried watching a few episodes but just couldn't stay with it...now Vikings, that a different story.

If you really want to understand that period in history and what led up to it read "The Source" . Yeah, over 1,000 pages but it moves really fast .

Or if you prefer something with more pictures, "Hagar The Horrible"...

Wife and I have been watching knightfall and have really gotten into it looking foreword to the new show every week. If you guys like these weekly TV series try JUSTIFIED however beware, there should be a warning label on the shows as they are additive. I went through 6 seasons in about 3 weeks, sometimes 3-4 a day.
