Title: The motor company has issued a recall...to do basic maintenance?
Post by: sdcr on February 11, 2018, 12:38:49 PM
A rider friend and HD owner sent me this. Seems like The Motor company will be doing a recall of about 174,000 motorcycles, because the owners don't know how to do a standard maintenance item. Changing the brake fluid in the machine!

Discussed at length already here:

Summary: it's a little more complicated.

Bleeding ABS systems on Harleys requires the use of a scan tool to cycle the modulator.

Which is something most other bike and auto manufacturers haven't needed for some time.

Also I think it's safe to say regardless of maintenance recommendations most people don't change brake fluid as often as Harley is requiring and when they don't most systems don't fail.

Harley seems to be in a unique position because of some system failures that shouldn't be so easy to occur just because the fluid wasn't changed.

At least that's my read on it.

The good news (for owners) is that Twin Tech already has a tool available to cycle the modulator while bleeding.

But I still think it's unacceptable in the long run for the Harley ABS systems to be so fragile.

On the positive side, getting customers back in to do the work (especially if that particular customer hasn't experienced the failure) gives them a chance to shop for gear, modifications, and check out the new bike offerings. While we may joke about them being a T shirt company that also sells motorcycles, their marketing has been second to none!

Kev,

Thanks for the heads up, I must have missed that thread.
