Title: Dart Marlin vs Moto Guzzi windscreen on V7 III
Post by: sgl0226 on February 22, 2018, 02:52:12 PM
I'm thinking of getting a V7 III Stone and can't decide on windscreens.  Can anyone compare the Dart Marlin to the Moto Guzzi screen?  I don't want a real large screen on the bike because I don't plan on long distance highway riding (that's what the Indian Chieftain is for), but I definitely do plan on doing some shorter highway riding and don't want to get blown off the bike (I'm 63 and it wouldn't take much).  Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks.

disclaimer... I'm 5'10".

I think 6'3" might be a little "monkey humpin' a football" on a V7, personally, but I'm assuming you've sat on it and like it.

The Dart Classic, for me, at my height... if perfect for what I want in a flyscreen. It takes the wind off my chest from mid neck, to the joints of my shoulders. Leaves my arms and head in the wind. It takes just enough wind off me to keep me from getting fatigued on long rides (and we do long rides... 600-700km days are normal).

I like it.  I like it enough that I want to try a Marlin. I'm thinking, if the Classic works for me, at my height, the Marlin would work pretty well for you, at yours.

Thanks for the input.  Actually, I'm 6'.      63 is my age.  That's why it wouldn't take much wind to blow me away!

6 foot.  32 inch inseam.  I have both and prefer the Marlin.  I'll use the rear pegs for a change of pace every now and again on the highway.  Works a treat.

I use a big National Cycle number in the winter months but will switch to a dark tint Dart ASAP. The barn door keeps the wind off but looks frumpy  at best. The Dart will keep crud off the instruments, a little wind off the torso and look the business.

I definitely don't want big.  If I'm gonna be on the highway that long I'll take my other bike.  I just can't decide between the Dart Marlin and the Moto Guzzi which appears a little bigger.  The Marlin is a lot less money so if they both function about the same, I'll go with the Marlin.  I'm trying to figure out if the Moto Guzzi is worth the extra money.

I put a Dart Marlin on my Bonneville T120 and took it off because all the air was directed straight at my helmet. The wind noise was too much even thought I use foam earplugs. 5'10"

I have a Dart Marlin on my V7 III Special, am 68 yo, and 5'6". The Dart allows air flow to hit me about neck level, which is fine for me and reduces wind noise at helmet level.  I wanted to try the MG shield for colder days but the price stopped me, if it doesn't work=wasted $300. So, I just layer up if it is too cold. I have ridden with the Marlin 200 miles at a time, and it is fine.

I have the Dart Classic on my V7 III and find it made riding at speed more enjoyable.  I'm only 5'6" though so YMMV.

On my V7II I Iike my Marlin but would consider it a spring summer fall shield. I am looking for something with more coverage for colder temps as I ride year round.

Very high quality shield though!

I have a Dart Marlin on my Griso 1100 and it is no game changer, the small factory fly screen  does about the same job.

Same situation here, cross country trip approaching with Stornello...
So far we’ve  heard from people with Marlin. (Except one who has both)

Anyone here who has the MG windshield and can give opinion about it?

I've got a '09 V7 Classic with the factory mid-size shield.  I think it was called the "sport shield" at the time.  A compromise between a small Dart shield and the full size full-comfort shield.

It's a compromise I like.  The adjustment range is small, but I found a good spot.  With the small range of adjustment, it might not work for everyone.  With a shield this mid-size, you understand you're not 600 mile days of touring.  Fine by me.

It's been said before.  Screens are very personal, just like seats are.  What works for one may not work for another.  Helmet plays a big part in comfort as does body type.  Noise and buffeting are two real issues with screens.  Taking the majority of the wind off the chest so as not to get blown off the bike but leaving the helmet in clean air is a great place to start.

Sometimes we get lucky but I'd wager plenty of us have 4 or 5 screens laying around that we don't use for one reason or another.

Kevin,
It's probably this one (link below), which is an older version not adapted to the current V7.

The diagram makes it look large.  On my bike it looks smaller.
