just changed the oil on my 2003 ev11 hydro
went for a ride and there is oil all over the bottom of the tranny and it looks like it is coming from the gearbox vent tube... it is redline HD shockproof. i know i put in the proper amount.
what shoud i look for first?

Did it have Shockproof in it before the change? It is so tenacious that it all won't drain out. If you refill with the "correct" amount, it will be overfilled. Don't ask me how I know. :smiley:

Most likely if you look in fill hole it's all foamed up inside, one reason I don't use it. I seen too many messes.
Also make sure the trans vent hose is routed over and up behind the frame top rail like stock.

Double check the vent line from the bottom of the air box. It is common to get oil from the airbox and it drains near the back of the transmission. The oil is blown out the crankcase vent if you overfill the engine and run it a bit hard.

i did not have the redline stuff in there before
what would cause the gearbox oil to come out of the vent?
tomorrow i will check out the routing oof the hose.
are there any "improvements" one could make on the breather system?

As I said, you changed the oil. My money is it is coming out the airbox because you overfilled the engine oil..
The transmission vent hose is to near the rear of the battery. Is the oil from back there?
The airbox vent is near the rear of the trans. Is it from there?

so you are saying that if i overfilled my engine oil, that would make my transmission oil come from the transmission vent tube?
please educate me here.

Did you drain it completely? If so, then 750 cc of gear oil.
A vented fill plug would need a long vent hose attached or gear oil would just burp out of it. Not necessary since there's already a transmission vent...

sounds like it was overfilled. Open the level drain, put a rag under it and let it dribble out for 20 minutes.
when it stops draining, it should be at the right level.

If it absolutely is the pink milk shake stuff, then pull the level plug on the right side. As I mentioned, the vent line goes up and back to near the back of the battery. Is that where it is from? I have never seen a 5 speed vent oil.
Any chance that you cracked the drain plug. They are hollow with a magnet and easy to break. Which drain plug did you use? The bottom one, or the rear one? The rear cover one doesn't drain to well unless the front of the bike is a bit higher.

ok... did some exploring on the guzzi:
airbox is dry as a bone.
transmission vent line is dry as a bone
i have pepto colored oil on the rh lower part of the drive shaft.
the fwd shaft boot clamp was loose enough to move by hand.
there is oil all over the bottom from the wind spreading it around.
looks like i have a leak... anybody want to chime in?

i also removed the leveling plug and nothing came out... oil is at the proper level.

I'd say u-joint boot leak from loose clamp or a crack in rubber, that's if you have same oil in the rear drive.

so there is oil inside the boot that could leak out it if it was loose?
i may have found my problem....

Right, oil vapor is supposed to go up the shaft from rear drive and lube u-joint & splines but it may not happen.
You could slide the boot back on one side and inspect or stick your little finger in there.

If you have the pink milkshake in the rear drive, it could be migrating up from there, if not , possibly the rear output seal on your transmission may be the culprit, allowing oil into the u joint boot.

The 2003 has a swingarm with a very long enlarged section to hold the compound u-joint. The carrier bearing is locked in place by a grub screw on the bottom side. Is that screw loose? Could oil be leaking there?

Yes, there's a 1/8 moon cut-out on the pinion bearing housing and a little tunnel matching it on the flange it bolts to.
AND like Patrick said about the grub screw on the underside holding a carrier bearing in place.

Any chance the rear drive was overfilled?
On my 2004 EV, it leaked a bit around the set screw (grub screw) under the carrier bearing. I simply cleaned it off and wiped a bit of sealant on it. It is normal for some lube to migraite up towards the boot. But, the boot and everything should keep the lube in, and water out.

Cant find a pic, but here is the factory diagram. Screw comes in from the bottom in that expanded area of the swingarm.

This is what mine looked like. Misreading the manual, the previous owner had put 750ml in the rear drive instead of 250ml.

Common since the manual calls the rear drive a 'transmission' I believe.

what do yohu use to remove\tighten it?
also decided to check the amount of pepto in the final drive... opened the leveling plug with the bike on the centerstand, also slightly jacked the front up so the rear wheel was on ground and it started trickling out...
im gonna leave it like that till it stops.
also found the fuel level sensor plug and manual fuel tap leak... oh well.
ill fix it all one thing at time.
one thing i also noticed...the tank does not sit center when mounted
it looks like the wire harneses are routed all together on too of the frame... is this correct?
if anyone has a pic of how the harnesses under the tank SHOULD look i would appreciate it.

I noticed what you describe as the gas tank being off center, on my 03 aluminum, the gas tank would lean to the left. I think it was caused by the weight of a full tank of gas when the bike was sitting on the kickstand, leaning left. The rubber cushions that hold the gas tank center are soft, and will "give" with the weight of the tank.
that problem can be solved by replacing all the rubber bits, and or putting the bike on the centerstand.
In my case mounting a sidecar, where the bike is always upright, solved that issue.
I dont think the wiring under the tank is the culprit, as tere seems to be plenty of room between the harness and the tank tunnel.

I usually just clean/degrease it, and wipe some sealant in the hole. That has always worked for ones I did.
Of course then you have to pick out the sealant if you ever want to get to the screw.

is the grub/set screw something that can be removed, sealed up, and reinstalled without ripping the swingarm apart?
my tank seems to be off center due to the fuel pressure reg hitting the wire harnesses routed on TOP of the frame.
is the routing correct?

my fuel sending unit has fuel leaking from where the wire harness is routed into the sensor as it enters the tank... is there another fix other than replacing it?
i already have a manual fuel tap but that also has fuel leaking from the between the body and the knob... i am going to replace that piece.
