I don't think its stopped raining over here since November and the odd day it hasn't rained (like yesterday) I've been incarcerated in the office

Maximum respect for your adventurous spirit Nick. The weather this year has been pretty bad by our standards, which seems to coincide with your visits.
One of the big problems is the state of the roads not just the weather. The small back roads are being churned up by over sized farm machinery and HGVs using them more with the advent of sat nav.
