Got a 2017 V7 III and the owner's manual specs 10W-60 motor oil
Went looking all over for some and came up empty. Finally found just two quarts of this. Liters, actually. The guy at the 7th parts store that I visited went into the back and came out and said that he didn't even know where they came from.
Does everyone just order off of the internet ?

You will find 10W60 on Amazon (Liquid Moly 10W60) and some NAPA stores carry it. If you have a BMW (car) store nearby they use it in the M series cars. Many other high performance cars call for 10W60. IMHO it's worth the extra expense to use the recommended oil just for peace of mind. Heck, you are only talking about a couple quarts every oil change. Also, I feel OK with going well beyond the the recommended oil change interval. Send an oil sample into Blackstone to establish when you need to change...I bet it's more than 6K miles, possibly as much as 10K.

Do you guys have Motul? In Australia its pretty much the default oil in bike shops and their 7100 is available in 10W60.

I do. It's by far the easiest and fastest way to get it ... you can buy it in the local Honda shop, or in the BMW car shop if you want to drive to town, but easier just to have a quick-moving guy in brown shorts hand it to me at my front door, or leave it on the porch ....
Not an option in Canada, I understand, but works most other places.

Is it any different to the earlier V7 Part? Or simply more expensive?

I get Motul 10W60 from CSA, a local shop for about 50 bucks a gallon. They did not stock it but had it in 2 days. It woud be slightly easier to order off the internet but I prefer to support local shops who haven't screwed me over

I was told that Oreilly Auto Parts Stores carry the Castrol full synthetic 10W60. Here is a link; https://www.oreillyauto.com/shop/oil-16865/motor-oil---full-synthetic-16694/full-synthetic---10w-60-19710?q=10w60

I know I know..... but I am getting conflicting part numbers. And I have one here from a Moto Guzzi Dealer with the part number 12553100 on it and promised to fit a 2017 V7 III

It looks the same as the one in the Breva, at least the same design. About 10 years ago the agents wanted over $30 for one. Fortunately, Moto Kiwi on Waiheke Island only wanted less than half that for the same (Uni) filter.
Sadly, I see my stock is now down to one remaining so i guess I will find out soon what the new price is. No doubt  will flow.

Does anyone replace them that quick?

Cycle Gear carries this. Meets all the specified requirements and makes my V7 happy.

Or you could try a KTM / Husqvarna dealer if you’re close to one, a lot of their bikes run the same oil.

Get it at BMW car dealers. One of their older models called for 10w-60, and sometimes the BMW dealers sell Castrol 10w-60 pretty cheaply. However the last time I went they sold me BMW branded oil w a "BMW price."
Ouch.
Anyway, it's nice to walk in and get the oil without having to order off the internet, pay shipping, etc.

I would call my local NAPA and they would get the Liquidmoly 10W60 in gallon bottles for me within a day or so to pick it up.
Funny, as in odd, story. I was going through it pretty quick when both the wife and I were running newer Guzzi's as our primary rides. The NAPA guy told me they had to order it a case at a time and they had never sold or even carried it before. I would buy two. Several months later, when I called to get it again they were always sold out. This happen more than once.

It's not listed on Napas site anymore.
I stick with the Motul 7100 online. with some shopping you should be under $50 to the door for 4 Liters.

While I use Motul or Motorex synthetics in 50 and 60 weight varieties in my hot-running, high-output KTM 390, I have begun using this inexpensive Valvolene dino oil, on a tip from Charlie Mullendore, in my V50 and SP. Seems ideal, due to the high ZDDP content, perfect viscosity and economical pricing for frequent oil changes.

I don’t rightly remember where this information came from but I’ve heard that the 10-60 recommended oil is due to the extra heat the closed system with an 02 sensor generates. Therefore if one is changed over to the open loop dropping the 02 sensor 20-50 motorcycle oil is fine. Any thoughts on this?

Crap. I had 24 bottles in the shopping cart, then checked and it is rated SN. It's probably fine, but I'll stick with SG rated oil.

The "SG" is an obsolete classification that has been reprinted in many owners manuals for many years. There are even some motorcycle specific oils that show "SG" on the label, if for no other reason that many owner's manuals still spec it. Some of this has to do with wet clutch compatibility. Much of this oil also meets the later SL/SM/SN classifications.
As an example - on the label of Amsoil MCV 20W-50 Synthetic Motorcycle oil
"JASO MA/MA-2 API SG/SL/CF/CG-4 ISO-L-EMA2"
I have a bottle of Genuine Yamalube that says "SG" - but then (on the side) says "Exceeds API SL"
hahahahaha then I have a bottle of Harley oil that has a picture of a Harley on the label and the grade (20W-50)
I was looking for the words "Put this in your Harley. Trust us". lol - because there are no specs listed

FWIW - even the tech bulletin that came out in 2006 (#010-2006), which is the one that specifically modified oil recommendations to include 10-60 for certain models, specifically said (bold mine):
1100 SERIES California - Mechanical Tappets
Engine Oil: RACING 4T 10W-60 or as an alternative 20W-50
And I'll note there was no similar "or an an alternative" wording attached to the CARC model recommendations.
-
From what I've studied in the past, SG rating falls within the SN rating. G is before N. Therefor, any N rated oil also includes G rating and other prior ratings to SN.

I'm not very good at this
I think my point was that "SN" oil is OK.
I apologize for the controversy
After further reading, I have discovered that my owner's manual recommends "a high quality 10W60 motor oil" and goes on to recommend Castrol motor oils. Castrol only markets one 10W60 motor oil (SN), and I have somehow managed to acquire some of this elusive elixir.
Life is good
Thank-you, everyone.
-
Agreed but for those that don't have this information they are looking for the magic "SG" or now days 4T on the label.
Gives warm and fuzzys!!!
:-)
^whatever Luap said.
Unless you are running SUPER OLD CAR and OLD OLD engine, SN can be reversed used for SG.
If you REALLY concerns about it, I do know Motul 7100 4T is rated from SG to SN

(http://thumb.ibb.co/d8SKs7/7100_4_T_datasheet_zps6ipuzlul.jpg) (http://ibb.co/d8SKs7)
Beside SN, SG...or whatever rated, you need to make sure it IS NOT ENERGY CONSERVING, and JASO MA & MA2 rated.
I know we have dry clutch system, so it may not affect us that much, but I simply like to stick to that rule as "shit happens"

Where did you find
"API SG/SH,SJ/SL, CCMC G5 and JASO MA2 certified"
All I'm seeing is SM/SN
I'll buy a few gallons if it is SG..
Edit: After more research it looks as if the only SG rated one is the 5-40.

There is nothing like an oil thread.
For those that go back a bit, you may remember a few years ago when a dealer (forgotten who) put a post up saying basically, "what is going on. I suddenly have umpteen bikes ranging from a few tens of thousands of miles to the hundreds of thousands all with failed cams/followers." The oil boffins here said that the oil companies had quietly dropped the zinc loadings. This happened with oil ratings at about the SJ time.
A metallurgist said that the zinc prevented "microwelding" happening as the follower rubbed over the cam surface. Although oil manufacturers had put additives in to improve lubrication, they did not prevent the microwelding happening on flat tappet engines like Guzzis.
For myself, from that I look for the zinc loading rather than the rating. I use 10W/60 because the smallblocks run hot. I have used 10W/50 when the 10W/60 was unavailable. Penrite have the zinc loading on their packaging. That's what I use.

Love me an oil thread! My approach is a little different; I just use what Bubbie uses :)
Seriously, there's long thread on a Harley site where a guy named Bubbie who lives in Southeast Arizona switched his modified EVO to Liqui Moly 10W60. His analysis from Blackstone said he should run it out to 7,500 miles between intervals.
I've been to SE Arizona and I once owned a Harley. If that oil can handle that combination, with a built motor to boot, I think it will take care of my Griso.

Advisory: Check owner's manual to assure appropriate service category and viscosity grade. API SM engine oil is backwards compatible. As such, it can be safely used in older vehicles. It should be noted, however, that the use of API SM engine oil in some older "muscle cars" with flat tappet camshafts, has been linked to premature wear. As such, check owner's manual to assure appropriate service category and viscosity grade.
That's all I'm going to say about it.
-
That's all I'm going to say about it.
Flat tappets??? SG rated oil won't save those in a Guzzi

I used Red Line 10W-60 oil in my 2009 Norge for most of its 55 K mile life (totaled on a deer). Though Red Line oils do not have API ratings, the company claims that their 10W-60 oil is recommended for: API SN/SM/SL/SJ/SH/SG/CF and ACEA A3/B3/B4. Might continue to use it in my recently acquired 2007 Norge.

Wow, ordered 2 gallons Tuesday at noon, shipped for $48. Came home from work today (Thursday) and they're on my front porch. That's pretty awesome considering where I live.
Oh, after doing more research on silkolene, I did find this little bit of info on revzilla (where it's $16 a quart):
* Developed and tested in World and National Superbike Racing
* High Viscosity Index, exceptional shear strength and outstanding thermal stability give excellent stay-in-grade" performance
* Outstanding anti-wear, anti-friction and load-carrying properties
* Meets or exceeds API-SF and SG standards
* Motorcycle 4T JASO-MA certified

Bought 12 liters. Was having problems with online ordering so actually had to use the phone and talk to a real person!
Very helpful and friendly. Said they were sorry I was having problems online..the problem was on their end. No matter what the issue was the order was placed.
Asked how they could offer such a great price...said they bought someone's entire inventory hence the price.
Thanks for the info Luap....I did some research prior to ordering (including calling Dusty!!) and was happy with the info.
Anyway I'm set for awhile.
Ride safe and often......
