Now I'm not exactly the Ace of Pace, but it did slow me down a bit.
Travelling in the Victorian and NSW high country on a new set of Pilot 5's recently, I became aware just how easy it is to make a monumental error that can end in tears.
The scenery is a plethora of warnings about impending doom and possible death that is a mere twist of the wrist at the wrong instant, but we somehow survive.
At least if you're reading this you have..!
Fair dinkum, it's a wonder we're not all dead. Here's a snippet of the type of thing..
(http://thumb.ibb.co/dG6GfS/IMG_0741.jpg) (http://ibb.co/dG6GfS) (http://thumb.ibb.co/hL590S/IMG_0742.jpg) (http://ibb.co/hL590S) (http://thumb.ibb.co/cvAnn7/IMG_0743.jpg) (http://ibb.co/cvAnn7) (http://thumb.ibb.co/eyvWEn/IMG_0744.jpg) (http://ibb.co/eyvWEn) (http://thumb.ibb.co/j3hYS7/IMG_0747.jpg) (http://ibb.co/j3hYS7) (http://thumb.ibb.co/c4oJun/IMG_0748.jpg) (http://ibb.co/c4oJun) (http://thumb.ibb.co/gYAL77/IMG_0749.jpg) (http://ibb.co/gYAL77) (http://thumb.ibb.co/bxSp0S/IMG_0750.jpg) (http://ibb.co/bxSp0S) (http://thumb.ibb.co/mQqL77/IMG_0751.jpg) (http://ibb.co/mQqL77)
Bugger me..!
'Can't say I wasn't warned..
Hey, while we're on the topic, (which we weren't).
These new Michelin 5's are the bee's knees, it's relatively easy to paste up the edges more than usual even though in some parts, they've sprayed the road with some crap that makes it look wet.
It's as black as a dog's guts and you'd swear black and blue that there's been a diesel spill and you're gunna crash, but not yet.
(http://thumb.ibb.co/fyJnLS/IMG_0754.jpg) (http://ibb.co/fyJnLS)
The old 4's didn't scuff like that on the edges, but we'll see how it all goes
There should be a sign that says..
Slow down you tool, you're gunna crash.

Nice signs.
This one caused me to think for a bit.

Well, I sort of did..
Ultimately.

These warning signs are marks for good/great roads.
-
Here in Sardinia there aren't many signs warning of curves, since there are too many curves to bother. There are some, but they seem to be where they aren't needed.
Direction signs are just as unhelpful. This one in Santadi shows that everyplace you really want to go is to the right, but you have to go left.

Fay and I went on a "Shamrock Tour" around Williamsburg, KY, staying at the Cumberland Inn, and posted above the indoor swimming pool was this sign:

I have spent much time meditating about the deeper meaning of the sign since then, and have concluded that it is true on many conscious and unconscious levels ....

Road signs in Europe are there to confuse yanks about which direction to go ,or where you are.
They work pretty well for that purpose.

Hmmm..
Here's one I hate.
You're cruising down the freeway on your way to a place roughly in the vicinity of Narre Warren.
(About 15 km removed).
The sign on the off ramp says "Narre Warren only".
In 1.5 seconds, you need to decide the following.
Will that exit only take me to Narre Warren ?
Or
Is this the only exit that will take me to Narre Warren ?
Two different things...(Turns out it's the latter).
When you have a hyper ability to perceive ambiguity, does that say you have a good or a poor command of English ?

Way back in about 87 I was on Western Samoa, not American Samoa, On the back side of the island along a beautiful beach, I found a coconut tree that came out of the ground in a graceful arc. I sat on the ground and lounged against the arcing trunk. So comfortable that I dozed off. I was awakened by a heavy thump close by. I opened my eyes and say a coconut had fallen and hit the ground about 3 feet from me. I looked up and saw a arsenal of coconuts waiting their turn to have a shot at me. I decided to move. As I got up I looked behind the trend saw a huge wild boar snuffling the ground for tidbits about 20 feet away. I decided I had enough nap for a while and moved on.
The coconut falling signs are not put there for humor. Some coconut trees are nearly 100 feet tall. A coconut from that far up can definitely cause broken bones or even death.
Hawaii is also infested with saber-toothed hamsters. Don't try to play with one. They are related to mongoose.

One of these states, thought it was Pennsylvania but it appears not, has a sign before every bridge, "Bridge may freeze before road". Maybe it's the way my mind works, but every sign has me thinking, "Then again, maybe not"

If you haven't been there before, don't ride past the turn off to Lake Argyle. Well worth it. The best bends for thousands of ks in either direction, & it is stunning. It's well posted, unlike the Tanami Track, which when I was last at that end, had a rickety suburban street sign pointing to some wheel ruts in the red dirt.
Oh, frabjous joy.
-
When I lived up in the mountains I put up a sign on the access to my place that read, "Death End Road".
My friends liked it.

Seen out in the boonies beyond the backwaters at the top of our South Island,
"Even More Cowshit Road". Said it all. Sorry, we have a photo somewhere but I cant find it.
Also seen in a more settled part of the same area, the sign, "Bates Road" had been carefully changed with a precursor done in the same colour, ReproBates Road. Lasted a day but was seen by many.

Back in the day (Camden Town, I think, the early '70's) there was a bust of Sigmund Freud on a large plinth, with the spray canned graffiti "WANKER" . Thought it was apt. That graffiti was left unmolested for ages, so I guess others did too.
