Title: Wixom luggage mounts on Loop Frame bikes -- top shock mount stud not long enough
Post by: jas67 on April 04, 2018, 06:16:05 AM
So, I was looking at the Wixom bag mounts for the Eldo.    They mount to the the top shock mount stud, the rear seat mounting bolt (both places where the grab handles mount), and also to the top bolt for the passenger foot peg mounts.

With the grab handles in place and a single large washer, the top shock mount stud only has a few threads protruding from the nut.

The bag mounts are pretty thick, maybe 1/8".     So, this question goes out to anyone who has Wixom bag mounts (or any bag mounts that attach to the shock stud), were you able to keep the grab handles on when you put them on?   I kind of hate to skip the washer, but, I guess I could just use a thin one and or maybe some loc-tite on the nut.

The Wixom bag mount doesn't attach directly to the shock stud - there's a hex-stock spacer approx 1" long that threads onto the stud, then the bag mount bolts to the hex piece.

I have two of the hex pieces and will send them to you if you'd like. But, they can be easily made out of 3/4" hex stock or from an M10 coupling nut.

Thanks for the info and the offer, Charlie.

I'll add a couple to my next McMaster order.

Too bad all the stainless ones I find are 30mm long and not 24mm like that black-oxide one (which will likely rust quickly).

Is stainless hard to cut and machine?
I'd like to get the stainless ones and shorten them.

Stainless cuts easily on a lathe and use of a good quality parting tool.  You might leave a burr in the threaded center, so you should also do a countersink to the threaded bore.

I have used an 10mm coupling nut, did not have to shorten the ones I used.  DonG

The ones I got off Amazon arrived yesterday.   They're 28mm long.   I'll try them as is.    I'm sure the few mm won't make a difference.
