Hi everyone,
I'm working an issue with bro-in-laws SUV. I'm unfamiliar with the particulars of a modern all-wheel-drive system but I've made an observation and my question is: have I found a malfunction or does the system work like that?
Details:
2010 Hyundai Santa Fe GL, V6 3.6L (I think, maybe 3.8L?) . All Wheel Drive, selectable by a dash button - I don't believe it is on-demand.
Issue:
With AWD selected OFF, rhythmic hum from rear end at mid-speeds, 80 - 90 kmh. Not quite the deep growl of a failing wheel bearing, but lighter. more like a whirr or what you feel if you run aggressive tread snow tires (or off road tires, i guess..)
His tires have not been changed (all-seasons are installed, with non-aggressive tread);the issue began suddenly.
Tire visual inspection finds nothing obvious - no damage/thrown belt etc.
Question: when jacked, I spin the LH rear. It spins alone.
Spin the RH rear and the LH rear wheel turns with it - like an old style differential in yer dads Oldsmobile.
Should it?
Is there an electric clutch in the diff that's not disengaging or is this normal system operation? I was thinking both rears should freewheel with AWD OFF.
I've not yet surfed the web to find info, but will later.
Sun is shining ! Time to do end-of-season maintenance and snowblower storage!
