Title: Swap engine from a 98 1100EV to a V11 sport 2003
Post by: antmanbee on May 05, 2018, 12:01:35 PM
I would like to know if anyone here has any experience with using a EV 1100 motor in the V11 sport.

My V11 engine is blown. Has a bad crank and rods and lots of debris in the pan.

From my research it looks like the block, bearings, crank, rods, flywheel and clutch are the same.

The pan assembly would need to be retained as well as the front timing cover, but the rest of the engine looks like it should bolt right in.

What are the other differences of these two motors and what other obstacles are there that I may be overlooking?

I am trying to come up with a plan as to what to do.

I also posted this in the V11 forums but thought some experienced members here could help me answer some questions.

Thanks

I would have the oil pump checked, too much metal leaves it damage.  Just use V11 block and put your crank, bearings, rods, cyl & pistons. Use V11 cam, heads, everything to keep same FI. It will be like a low compression V11 Sport. Clean everything out on V11 Sport block
Another project.

Pictures of the screen and pan.

Right now I am leaning towards just popping in the intact ev1100 motor.
I will then completely tear down the V11 motor and thoroughly inspect eveything.
I suspect there is the likelihood of metal debris everywhere. It is probably in the oil cooler too. Is that possible to flush the cooler well enough to be confident that all debris is removed?
While putzing in my garage yesterday I thought, why not remove the screen in the pan and see what is inside.
The screen had holes in it and was deformed allowing gaps where it was supposed to seat against the pan.
So the screen wasn't stopping any particles from circulating and maybe that was the initial cause of the bearing failure.
I am not sure of the oil path in the engine after the pick up from the screen. Would the filter prevent all the debris fro being circulated?

The V11’s suffer from oil pick up exposure under hard acceleration, especially if the oil level is allowed to drop.

Using the EV motor will not be as easy as it appears. The smaller valve will mean the fueling will have to be fiddled with, severely, and a variety of other parts will have to be swapped.

Thanks Pete. If I repair or replace the V11 engine with another V11 engine I will definitely get a roper plate. I have read about this quite a bit. It may be what caused the demise of the current motor.
Regarding the fueling, I can flash to any of a variety of Jackal/EV maps I have for the 15M which I think is what is on the V11.
What variety of other parts need to be switched? That is exactly what I am concerned about, unforeseen differences or parts that wont work.

if all of the forward mount issues are solved with the timing cover it should bolt up.  If like the Brevas though it also mounts to studs in the engine case, the EV engine case doesn't have those stud points cast into it.

That's as much as I can contribute, sorry.

Maybe you should talk to Scud. If he still has the parts, I sold him a bike with a mostly disassembled V11 Sport / LeMans engine! I had the head repaired (new valve guide and spring) and all of the parts were in spec.

Since bothengines are out why not just swap the barrels and pistons and heads, sump, spacer, (Add a plate.) and the timing chest. Scud will probably know if the V11 has different rods? I’m really not sure. If the rods are different you’ll need to take the crank out and you can get the V11 rods closed and ground as if the big ends were hammered they will almost certainly be out of round.

To the best of my knowledge the case, crank etc are identical.

It would unless it became so full that the bypass opened. Other than that, the only thing that gets unfiltered oil is the pump itself.
