It's about time. I'll be interested to see how much fuel capacity it has and the weight.
I'd be down with the tri - color model.
It's only a crash bar and bags away from the Stelvio.
My Stelvio is staying but I could definitely see this 850 taking up residence if the numbers that are important to me are good.

Sawweeett!
-
Did I miss it? What aspect of the V85 is patentable?
-
patents? patent for styling changes? I didn't know that patents extended to a finished product. As if someone would copy a complete design? I guess I learned something new.
nothing here about the engine, drivetrain or suspension.

For Scooters is pretty common.

I can't imagine a patent would have any value, particularly for a bike that's likely to sell in low volume and not be copied directly. If anybody did copy it directly they'd likely be the Chinese and the patent would be unenforceable. Typical corporate churn.
-
If none copies it, then the patent is not invalid, but not needed (and that's the most probable case).
If a chinese company copies it, then the patent would be unenforceable. Until the copies remain in China.
Is not that the companies ceased to patent designs and technologies only because China doesn't respect patents.

I think someone is a bit confused on the correct terminology. The article claims that a "design Patent" was lodged in Australia whereas I believe that Piaggio has lodged a Design Registration - https://www.ipaustralia.gov.au/designs
Not the same thing at all, a design registration is about how a product "looks" not how it works.
On a side note, as an Australian Industrial designer of 35 years standing I question the value of design registrations for about 95% of products so lodging one for a relatively generic looking Adventure bike seems a waste money.
Stick the funds back in to R&D where they might yield something of value is my (questionable) advice

They ruined it.

If you look carefully you can see it’s still a true smallblock because it’s dipstick has fallen out......

Thanks, that makes a lot more sense

In the production version, the fuel tank is smaller, and the seat has less padding...

ya...REALLY curious what those would be now...since they are patenting the design and all...
Feels like they really want us to ride it standing up...
and has anyone else noticed the side stand is WAY THE HELL OUT THERE?

^ So are the passenger foot pegs!

Its like they don't expect passenger...or actually assuming we are going to have a wide load one...?
-
Maybe the designer had a girlfriend with big feet and doesn’t like getting kicked in the Achilles’ tendon.
-
Damn I went from "put me on the waiting list" to "dang, the tank is too small"

How do you know the tank is smaller, it could just be reshaped with the same exact capacity. Same with the seat - maybe just reshaped for comfort. The excuses for not buying are starting already.

Visually it is, but hoping you are right...
Still holding my breath until the real states come out...COME ON MG!!!! :thewife:

There is such a thing as a Design Patent. Here is a wikipedia page for those interested: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Design_patent
As for the changes from the concept bike, the one that screams "street bike" instead of "dirt bike" is putting the rear brake caliper below the swing-arm where it can be destroyed by rocks - or is more likely to be submersed in water or mud. But that probably won't be a concern for most riders on easy to moderately technical trails. I hope Moto Guzzi sell a load of them, but I am still pleased with my Husqvarna 701 Enduro for the type of riding I want to do.
-
I really hope the V85 is what most of us have envisioned it to be.
Heard a rumor of a September 2018 release for a 2019 model year.
Not holding my breath but trying to remain optimistic.

But not in Australia (or most countries in the PCT) and I repeat I can't see the value in protecting the "shape, or patterns, lines and colour" of a generic looking motorcycle. Heaven forbid that Piaggio get into a corporate pissing contest like the Apple Samsung nonsense of a few years ago - spend the money on R+D

Honestly quite disappointed when they moved the rear caliper and exact as you said “ street bike” came across my mind.
Hopefully they can add a guard to it or something similar

Oh Gawd, that thing is ugly. Is this supposed to have the same tepid engine as in the V9?

I have to agree. It looks like a Honda pacific coast and Ducati Paso got drunk and bred. Maybe they give it a cool fast sunding name like the V85 Concrete or paint drying.....
-
Gee, I wonder why Piaggio doesn't come here for design advice from the likes of you hip cats?
I mean they must understand that you guys have money burning a hole in your pocket to buy a shiny new Guzzi!

No way, i'm deff buying! Even if I need a jerrycan , that thing was made to run the forest service roads around the BRP! I'm not getting the first one that appears in the dealership tho... I think the timing is going to be just right the second model year. I already have my pennies piling up in a shoebox for it.
