Title: Silkolene Pro 4 XP Oil 10W60 Anyone know this oil?
Post by: bad Chad on June 13, 2018, 01:44:54 PM
I'm not familiar with this brand of lubricant.  I found a source for it that is very reasonable.  Just looking for info.

I bought six 4 liter jugs for a little over a hundred bux..no shipping and fondling charge, either.
Although you can find sites that say is is SG rated, it's not on the bottle, once you get it in your hands.
So...
I bought some ZDDP additive
(https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51GfYYJSJEL._SX90_.jpg)
to add to it at the rate of 1 oz per liter. That adds a little to the cost, but it's still pretty cheap. (Guzzi content)

Their website says it's rated SN which as I understand it means that anything alphabetically higher than SG automatically includes SG am I right?

You should be able to get product information (MSDS) sheet on it, that'll tell all that's in it and how much.

Chuck, which bike do you run the 10w-60 in, the Scura, or the Aero Lario?
Rick.

Not really. ZDDP kills catalytic converters, so it has been quietly phased out for years. If it doesn't say SG, it's low on ZDDP. Period. SN is car oil. Good car oil.. but still car oil. Modern cars have roller tappets. Flat tappet engines need ZDDP.
Ahh, an oil thread in full bloom..

This is what I just got delivered.  I got nine liters at an incredibly good price.
$6.99 a bottle with free shipping.  It was cheaper to buy it by the Liter bottle than in 4L containers.  I got the nine quarts I ordered, today, just as advertised!

It is motorcycle specific 100% ester oil, they are not marketing it for cars, but it is rated SN, so I think I'll play it extra safe and pick up some Zddp aditive.

But for $6.99 a quart to the door, it can't be beat!

Silkolene is part of Fuchs, pretty reputable company.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuchs_Petrolub

Here's the MSDS sheet for that oil:  http://www.fuchsnet.gr/data/SDS/116423_SDS.PDF

I dunno what bike you have, but personally I wouldn't pay the extra for a motorcycle oil. I'd get a good car synthetic. Tends to be cheaper than specific motorcycle oil, and a synthetic handles heat better.
As mentioned if you have a flat tappet rather than roller cam model you need to take that into account. If so, look at synthetic diesel oils (not ones for modern diesels with DPF) or something recommended for older performance V8s.

Depends what you mean by full zinc.... The oil in run in my Honda is SN rated https://www.penriteoil.com.au/assets/pis_pdfs/FULL%20SYNTHETIC%2010W-40.pdf
It has about 1200ppm zinc

Dang it...sucked into another oil thread!
I'll have to see what's out there for my 06 Breva 1100 before long though.  I believe I've run a few different brands...ENI and Motorex come to mind..

I bought 2 gallons of the stuff from Iron Pony a couple months back. Total cost was $48 shipped to my door.

I haven't used it yet, but oil change coming up in less than 1,000 miles. Reviews of the oil are positive, and it meets or exceeds all the standards outlined in my manual.  Worth a try in my book.
