Title: 98 EV no spark no start
Post by: Bill on June 19, 2018, 05:43:14 PM
I have a beautiful well kept 98 EV that runs like new. But for the last 5 years or so sometimes it won't start. It's in its dead zone again and there is no spark on the plug. I just cleaned the two mag sensors and still it's dead. Next plan is to clean all the connections in the right neck. What I hopping for is someone to tell me  what circuit failure would prevent a spark during starting while everything else is normal. The bike has never failed once running.

Pull the relays out, give the bases a shot of DeOxit, reinstall. You still don't have the crappy Seimens (stock) relays, do you? While you are at it.. do the same to the fuses and fuse block.
I'm not looking at the schematic, but the kill switch and sidestand switch could be involved.
Other that are more knowledgeable will show up shortly.

good advice, I've seen where just unplugging, then replugging the relays works. I suggest you carry a spare at all times anyway

Is it Hot Dog & Mustered in FL?    Break in the wire for cam sensor or on fly wheel (same part), sometimes it works sometimes not.  Do an ohm check w/it doesn't go. Pretty common failure.

do that and also unplug spray and re plug the computer box connector.
if still Siemens relays get a better set from Pyro Dan at dpguzzi.com

If the sidestand switch or engine cutoff fail it also won't crank the motor over. I assume it is cranking the motor over.

Maybe the gap needs set on the timing sensors. I forget the clearance, but they need to be shimmed right.

Under the seat, there is an led light that flashes error codes.is it flashing?  I have the codes I can text or email to you if you want them. I got them from Pat Hayes when my buddy's 98 had a timing sensor fail.

Do you hear the fuel pump when you toggle the kill switch?

The two ignition modules under the the left side cover can fail due to bad connection.  It would seem odd that both would fail, but a cleaning and reattachment wouldn't hurt and is pretty easy.

that info is in the FI supplement manual.. I don't see it on Benders site but I have a PDF of it, I could email to you..

I just went through this with another user.  His was a wire failure within the pigtail for the sensor on the flywheel/bell housing.  Wiring was bent very sharp and crimped very tight with zip ties.  Should ohm out at 675 IIRC.  I had a similar failure on mine.  It was the identical sensor for the cam sensor up front.  Weak or corroded connection where it meets the main harness under the tank.  Remove, clean, DeOxit, assemble, go.  Either of these failures will flash a code on the LED u under the seat.

Pyro Dan has it on his site: http://dpguzzi.com/efiman.pdf
FWIW the procedure for setting the TPS is erroneous in this manual.

Do a search on Screamday's issues.  He went through everything and finally beat the gremlin with help from Guzzi Steve and Wayne.

Unfortunately.....gremlin is back.....same connector, different wire this time.  :violent1: :violent1:

Thanks Steve.....I have to dig into it to see what's going on and I haven't had time to do that yet. I may give you a call when I do get down to it.

Better get that pig fixed as I'm heading to Aiken end of July.  There's also a guy who has posted on another site with a Griso in Columbia.

There will be rides!

I'll be going thru  recommended steps one by one. I really suspect its related to the magnetic sensors in that the only problem is no spark. As I understand it if they malfunction the computer doesn't  know the motor is rotating and doesn't send a signal for the spark. I'll post my results as I try the posted recommendations.

Lot's of good advice here and I think problem is solved. Following posted advice I traced the bell housing sensor wire to the connector under the right side of the tank. There was an obvious pinch in the wire, I straitened it up with my fingers and got an instant start. So thanks to all for the help. Now I have to decide to buy a new wire and sensor or try to cut and splice the wire.  I'll appreciate any recommendations for that. Can't tell you how much I appreciate this forum.

The only option is to cut & splice the wire. [GC]
