Title: I know it's a sickness... But I can't stop
Post by: Bulldog9 on June 28, 2018, 05:06:37 PM
So my current count of motorcycles is six. My current bikes are my 07 Griso and 14 Norge. In a storage unit I have my 79 Xs 1100 which I've owned since 1984, and a grouping of other Yamaha XS series bikes from across the 70s. These will be garage pieces for when I retire and stop moving.

I am however strongly considering purchasing a V7 III special series. why? Because I want something smaller and lighter and modern and ultimately reliable. part of me wants to go for an older classic like a convert or an older V7 or maybe T-Type 850, but I really don't want to spend time tinkering fixing repairing Etc. I want to be able to do normal maintenance valve adjustments and ride and enjoy myself.

why a V7 3? Because I want something more sedate and light and fun easy to move around the garage and plink around town and just have some less aggressive riding enjoyment. the sporting nature of the carc series bikes is in keeping with how I've ridden most of my riding life, but I'm feeling the need for something a bit smaller and more sedate and the classic layout of the V7 III special seems to really scratch that itch and something I could keep for the long term.

I haven't ridden any of the modern V7 whether it is a series 1 2 or 3, but from what I'm reading the V7 3 seems to be the basic architecture that I would like enjoy and be able to keep over the long term.

I thought about potentially a stornello or a rough but as I've never really been a Trail Rider this would probably be wasted capabilities and I really like the look of the V7 3 classic or, the special. of course I really like the bright series but as it only has the single gauge that kind of rules it out, I want a full set of gauges including a tachometer. That's just me but I've never had a bike without a tach and I can't imagine riding one without it.

So I guess what I'm saying is my name is Steve and I'm a motorcycleholic.... .

Your fine, I don't think you need to question how many motorcycles you own until you get past twenty, that's my storey anyways.

It's sort of "human nature".   I've found that a man will never admit to:

1) Having been asleep in a chair
2) Being "rich"
3) Having too many motorcycles

"Too many" for another guy is about 1.5 times as many as I've got!

Meh,

Talk to Jay (Jas67)

I think he does finally have fewer than 30 bikes.... And only about 15-16 are registered.

But the latest one he added was a Blue V7III Special.

Me, I think my Sportster has been on my lift getting an oil change for a month or so....aye caramba!

It's only a sickness if it causes you to neglect something else of value, such as children, house payments, etc. Otherwise, it's a hobby... but you could pretend it's an investment portfolio without too much risk of slipping into sickness.

Somehow, I knew when I saw the OP's post that you'd cite me as an example.

You're a bit high in your estimate, only 11 are registered, though 13 running and riding.   The 305 Honda doesn't yet have a title, so, it isn't registered.   The 749 is a track-only bike.

That plus 9 project bikes = a total of 22.

I'm hoping to finish a 2-3 of the project bikes this next winter and sell in the spring.  That'll get me under 20.

The last few years, I've been on the reduction plan.   If I buy one, one or more needs to be sold.

Last year, I bought four, and sold three, so, actually, no reduction, but, I tried .    But, this year, sold NINE, and only bought one.

I have no plans to buy any more this year, or next year, unless my M.A.D.D. (Motorcycle A.D.D.) friend sells the Thrurton R (with "track racer" fairing) that he just bought.    I once bought a motorcycle from him that he only had for 10 weeks.

The tough thing is, if I buy the Thruxton R would be which one or ones to let go.

The only thing I have to say about the V7 III, is DO IT!

I must be getting old.  I've culled the herd from 4 to 2 and at a recent AMCA show, the most talked about topic was others cutting their herds down also.
The number two topic was selling off large cycles and keeping the smaller ones because they are so much easier to "toss around".

All of my motorcycles have been runners and ridden and I have had up to 8 at a time.  I found that 6 was the magic number when I was laying down 25,000 miles a year and had multiple bikes to choose from for my journeys so I wasn't rushed on performing maintenance on a particular bike when I could hop on another and take the trip.

Many times I have had to change out a tire prematurely or perform other maintenance early because I knew I would be needing a tire or maintenance before getting back home.

My local dealer allows test rides for serious buyers and test rides for not serious buyers if he has a used one on the floor.  Go get a test ride.

too many motorcycles ?

No such thing !

We started out many years ago, wrenching dead motorcycles back to life........Mostly because that's all we could afford.  And it's still my favorite hobby.  As the years went on, the quantity and quality of our motorcycles have substantially improved.  Here's a gaggle - in the basement

You're using that new math again. Didn't you sell 7 project bikes last year in one shot?

And yeah, you have no plans to buy any more THIS year... But then again you said that before the V7III.

Pay up in that bet!

Oh and see ya tomorrow.

I'm up to seven, but my initial investment is low. My old rule was is if it's interesting, Italian and under $1,500 then it's coming home with me. Due to inflation and recent work promotions / raises I've bumped that number up to $2,000. ( cheapskate =Guzzi content ).

Lucky for me, my garage is small and will accommodate only one motorcycle.  I sat on a V9 today.  It fit me like a glove.  The pegs were 3-4 forward of where my Nevadas are, which is perfect.  So a new V9 would get me a better seating position and ABS/TC, so is that worth $150 a month for the next three years?

I've always thought that one of the primary impulses in our DNA is the pursuit and appreciation of beauty.  I think collecting beautiful things that give us pleasure is a big part of satisfying that need.

Cut off your cable and starbucks and you can afford it.  You'll be too busy riding anyway.

How much interest would you pay over that 3 years.  Guzzi is advertising low rates right now.

Thanks for the feedback all. of course I find it semi humorous that I posted that after a significant amount of adult beverage intake...

I am seriously on the hunt, and after looking at the V7 special and other Series 3 models at a local dealer, I think I may be leaning towards a stornello. I have a garage full of street bikes, but nothing that I could ever take on the trail and I'm thinking that adding something a bit different with added capabilities may fit the bill exactly. I have the Griso for my Sport and aggressive riding, the Norge for my long-distance riding and Sport Touring, and the Stornello would be small enough to do when I want lights around have fun plinking and the occasional fire or gravel/dirt road, with the advantage of being able to go on Trails if I happen to find them, or even having the option to do it if I so choose.

I don't think a stornello is going to be much of a trail bike. The new V85 might be better if you can wait.

The Stornello is a pretty bike and I can't imagine you go wrong buying one. But that V7III of Jay's (formerly Kblowie's or something like that) really caught my attention. I think I'd had to go Hemi-Head V7... but that's me.

In my case trails would be out of the question on a Stornello, around here they're all deep sugar sand. I don't think the Stornello would do well.

I've been a street rider exclusively since the early 80's, and all my bikes are street machines. Not really interested in the Adventure Tourer or off road bike. My thinking (as muddled as it is) is adding another purely street bike even as tempting and beautiful as the V7iii Classic, meets the 'smaller and lighter' but thats about it. I cant imagine any serious off road riding, but having the ability/option of riding on gravel and hard packed dirt, and fire roads and a smaller lighter bike may fit the bill, and hep with the rationalizing to SWMBO (she who must be obeyed). She is supportive, and patient with my mechanical toys, and I help by never effecting the family budget, but you gotta leverage where you can ;-)

The V85 is interesting, but not my cup of tea. I like the scrambler concept, always have, and this seems the right time. Of course I will probably change my mind, but we will see.

Don't over think it.

Hi Steve- great thread- interesting stories from everyone. I know what u mean about those XS Yamahas- they were terrific bikes. Remember the Black and Gold "Midnight" series?   I've had about 25 MCs, over my 50 years of riding or so. The one I most regret selling (to this day) was the blue Suz GS1000 1979 Standard, with points ignition. The day it got ridden away, after selling it to my neighbor- I felt an inkling of regret. Haha- still regret it- what a fine standard UJM that was. What an engine those big In Line fours were.

My current stable of 5 (Which represent 4 different parts of the world's MC production) is:

W650 Kawasaki '00
Harley FXDX '02
Ducati MTS 1100S '09
Moto Guzzi Calif Vintage '09
BMW RNineT Pure '18

At one time I was up to (8.) Didn't go over with the new wife- but she is OK with (5)

Anything new or used that comes in now- something on the list will have to go. And I want none of those bikes to "go."
So- there they are- BTW are all registered, fueled, insured and ridden regularly on a "rotating" basis. The FXDX is getting new Pirellis this week.
